Heisenberg the dragon

Hi everyone, my name is Robinlynne I am a new mom to a bd named Heisenberg (we are big fans of breaking bad, RIP Walter White) my husband has always wanted a reptile but, I didn't so I would ignore him whenever he would bring it up.I finally gave in and agreed to get one.we did some research and decided to get A bearded dragon. I did a lot of online research and thought I knew how to take care of him. So on sept. 26th we brought Heisenberg home.

after getting him I found out we were doing some things wrong (mainly the lighting) we will rectify these problems immediately. I'd like to describe his set up n care so if I am doing anything else wrong someone can let me know. even though I didn't want him now he has a big spot in my heart and, I want to give him the best care that I can. also as a proud new mom I want to brag about my baby boy. I have pictures but don't know how to post them yet.

He is housed in a 36x18x18 terrarium. For substrate I'm using reptile carpet. he has a cave to hide in, a large branch under a basking bulb and, two vines to climb on. the cool side is about 89, the warm side about 97 and the basking area is around 115. The humidity is between 20 - 27%

The lighting is the area I made some mistakes with but, I am going to rectify the problems later this week. the lights are all on timers in attempt to replicate dawn, morning, noon, dusk and, night. I have two 125 watt MVB mounted about 9-10" above the tank. On each side of the tank I have a 75 watt basking bulb and red nocturnal bulb. Both set is about 4" above the tank. Above the front of the tank is a hood that holds four compact fluorescent 13 watt bulbs. I am going to exchange the hood for two 24" repti sun 10.0 tubes. I will also replace the red nocturnal bulbs with ceramic heating bulbs. I will replace all bulbs in 6 months.

From this site I have learned that the UVB bulbs should be mounted inside the tank, not above the screen. Personally I don't want to do this , mainly for aesthetics. However I think that with the two MVB and two UVB tubes that more than enough UVB and UVA is penetrating through the screen.

We got him from petsmart on Sept. 26th. He is now 13" long and is 130g (4.5oz) so we guess he is around 4 months old.

He gets a 15-20 min. Soak in the sink every day. Some times he will swim around but usually he just sits there or tries to get out. He is basically potty trained and will poop in the sink. However, if bath time is late he will go in his cage.

Heisenberg loves to cuddle with me every night. I wrap him in his blankie and snuggle him im my arm for 2-3 hours while I watch tv. He will bury his nose in his blankie and falls into a deep sleep. he sleeps so soundly that I can get up with him in my arms to get a drink or snack and he doesn't wake up. I put him back in his cage still swaddled in his blankie and he will sleep like that all night.

I didn't want him but now we have bonded and he has become part of our family. We don't have kids so, our pets are our children. He has 6 siblings; a dog, 2 cats and, 3 goldfish. All are very pampered and spoiled. When Heisenberg runs away from my husband and comes to me I tease my husband and say "Not the mama!". It's a line a baby dinosaur would say in a cartoon from the eighties.

As far as feeding goes he gets about 10-15 crickets a day that I dust with a calcium d3 powder. He mostly eats worms, about 7 a day that I spray with a multi vitamin. I breed my own silkworms, he also eats hornworms amd butterworms. I do not give him mealworms because they have an exoskeleton. I was giving him a freeze dried mix of mealworms crickets and grasshoppers about once a week that he would devour in no time at all. But the last time I gave it to him he didn't poop for 4 days, he usually poops once a day. I started to give him canned pumpkin and he finally had a bowel movement. I don't give him that mix anymore.

I now give him canned pumpkin every morning. He LOVES it, when he sees the container I keep it in he runs over to get it. I feed it to him on a spoon because if I put it in a bowl he makes a huge mess. He trusts me so much that he lets me wipe his face with a napkin. He also gets a salad every day that he picks at and, fruit occasionally. He loves banana but I know to only give it to him now and then. I also give him a moist food that is made by nature zone called baby bites.

Sorry this is so long and, I hope I haven't put too many people to sleep. I'm excited to meet many of you and I have enjoyed reading posts other people have posted. I look forward to read replies to my post.I'm happy to have found a place to talk about my new favorite subject; my sweet baby boy Heisenberg

Oh no..... Not at all what I was expecting to come on and read. Such sad news! Praying for you both, but he's a strong dragon who is very well cared for, so no doubt he will pull through!!

I know I've been really bad about posting while Heisenberg has been sick. I thank you all for wishing him well. He seems to be doing better. I will explain what is going on with him on Monday after the holiday. I just wanted to post his Easter picture before I didn't have the chance.

I hope everyone had a nice holiday. Ok as promised here is the scoop on what's been going on with Heisenberg.

The first time I brought him to the vet I asked if his not eating could be because he was burmating. The vet didn't think so because he said it hadn't been going on long enough. Then the second time he thought it was burmation and that Heisenberg would be fine but we should do blood work just in case. So I felt like a load had been lifted off my shoulders and elated that my sweet baby boy was going to be fine and that I had been worried for no reason. So I was totally unprepared for the phone call I had with the vet two days later when the results came in.

The results showed that Heisenberg was dehydrated, and that his liver wasn't functioning properly and that there was a decrease in kidney function and his calcium was too high. He said that the neurological signs heisenberg was showing was due to the liver. The vet said that for Heisenbergs' age this was baffling. My vet is a general exotic vet and he had never seen such results in a dragon so young. He called a vet who only deals with reptiles to get a second opinion, she too was baffled. She recommended some medications and to do another blood panel in a month. I've made an appointment for May 7th. The best outcome is that the primaryproblem is the dehydration and that the other problems will retreturn to normal once he is properly hydrated. The worst outcome is that it is a liver problem that is causing the other problems.

So the treatment regimen is: 3cc water/Gatorade three times a day, 8cc carnivore care three times a day, a bath 2 times a day, DMG once a day a medicine to boost his immune system and to a lesser degree to help with kidney function. Milk thistle every other day for liver health. B12 once a day to stimulate his appetite. He has started to eat better, he usually will eat 4 or 5 hornworms a day. He has good days and bad days when it is obvious that he does not feel well. Lately he has been having more good than bad days which is encouraging.

Jim was away for 2 weeks in the beginning of the month. When he came home he had 10 days off. We went to a casino/resort for three nights last week to celebrate my 45th birthday which is Thursday and our 10th wedding anniversary which is Mayv26th. I had a nice time but missed Heine who was being boarded at my vets. He was so cute when I picked him up. He was hiding behind a rock and when he heard my voice he poked his head up as if to say mom? Is that you?

As I said the second blood test will be on May 7th which is a Wednesday. The results will be in on that Friday but I don't want my vet to call me with the results. If it is bad news I don't want to hear it over the phone again and I'd rather have jim with me so I have made an appoitment for that Saturday so we can go together.

One good news is that the coccidia seems to be clearing up. His first fecal after being treated with the Albon came back negative. Now we do a fecal once weekly for 3 or 4 weeks. As long as all of them come back negative then is is practically certain that the parasite has been eradicated. I will be happy not to have to strike down his tank and bleach everything every night anymore. At the reptile expo we went to a while back I got a nice 3D background insert for his tank and I'm excited to finally be able to set it up.

So that is pretty much everything that is going on with Heisenberg. I'm sorry I haven't posted an update before now. I've been busy and I try to keep my thread upbeat and funny so I felt bad to post sad news. So there wont be anymore news tillMay 10th. I ppromise to keep everyone up to date.

Hi guys remember me & Heisenberg lol I know I haven't pos. But intheted anything absolutelyquite awhile and im sorry. We got the results of Heine's 2nd blood work today and its 90%very good news.

I was in the middle of writing a very long post about it when jim and I had to go out. So I saved the post as a draft to finish when I got back. Or at least I thought I saved it. Only to try to load the post so I could finish it but it was gone!! Which is really frustrating because I type with one damn finger and I worked on it for around an hour!!!! :angry5: :banghead:
I'm busy most of tomorrow but I will do it over on Sunday I promise.

It's me Heisenberg, remember me? Well I'm back!!! back!!

I know I've been really bad about updating my thread. I promise to be better.

Heisenberg had his second blood panel done on Wednesday. Yesterday we went in to get the results. the vet could have called me with the results but I decided I wanted to go in with Jim for emotional support in case the results were bad again. Heine came with us in case he needed an injection.

There is good news and bad news. The bad news is that the liver and kidney levels are still a little outside of normal and he is still a little dehydrated. the good news is that all levels are REMARKABLY better!!! It seems he does have some sort of liver disease, the vet suspects fatty liver disease. However he feels it can be managed with the meds he has been taking. He doesn't have to het meds daily anymore just 3 times a week which I can live with. I just hate when he sees the syringe and looks at me as ig to say no mom not again.

CPK is a level that shows overall health. Uner 100 is best but average is around 200, anything over 2,000 shows something is seriously wrong. Six weeks ago his was 30,000!!! the vet said he has never seen levels that high before. His level is now 61!!!!!!!! SIXTY ONE....Did you hear that up in the cheap seats I said 61 that is awesome!!

He feels that the elevated kidney values are due to the dehydration, and will return to normal once we get him hydrated again. However there is the rub. How to do that. He simply will not drink water on his own. I've tried several things but nothing works other than syringe feeding him water. We drove Heisenberg home and took a trip to the supermarket. We got a ton of fruits and vegetables with high water contents. My sweet baby boy is a very fussy eater, little bugger. Today we tried apricot.....NOPE take it away im not gonna eat it!! I'll keep trying. He does eat a lot of juicy worms but apparently thats not hydrating enough. I even let his hornworms grow to 3 or 4 inches before I give them to him and you can see the juice squeeze out of them as he chomps away at them. I'm going to try one of those vibrating worm Bowls, so the water will move a bit, see how that goes. Any other suggestions?

I asked the vet what do we do next. He said to continue to do what I've been doing because its working and to come back in 6 months for another blood panel. I said ok I will see you in 3 months. He said he knew id be in before the 6 months. Lol

well today is a really nice day and I want to put him outside in his reptarium so he can soak in the sun, so thats it for now.

I'm hoping the wriggling bowl will do the trick. I'm so glad to hear that he's recovered so well, hopefully next vet visit there won't be anything left of this fatty liver disease. You go Heisenberg & Mom :D

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
