that's a great question!!! i'm gonna keep my eye on this post as i'm curious too!
They sure can! Many of them will pick out brightly colored pellets from their salad, or pieces of fruits or veggies that are red or yellow.
Ming, one of my males, will try to eat the blue light on the corner of my speaker every time I let him loose on my computer desk, and the corner of my speaker has the teeth marks to prove it! LOL

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
