I'm sorry. When I read the new part of the title I said "oh, no!" My opinion is that Doyle was in worse shape than anyone knew. It happens with bad rescues, they die younger than they would have if they were taken care of the right way from the start. Don't blame yourself, you did everything right, it was just to late for him. I'm sure he knew that you cared and loved him, the pic of him snuggling with you is the proof. Thanks for trying to help him.

I feel so bad. Logically I know I did my best, but it still hurts. I got home late last night so he didn't even get any cuddles last night. I didn't think I'd get so attached so quickly, but when I spend hours a day worrying and being with a sick beardie, I guess I did.

I do want to get another beardie. They are such awesome critters. Thank you Miss T for everything - I looked forward to our daily 'chats'. I'll keep in touch on Kazi's page :)

Hello,

Oh no, I am so sorry to hear about Doyle, he was looking a lot better too. It is most definitely not your fault, but I know that doesn't take the pain of losing him away. He was loved & knew he was loved & that is all that matters now. I am sorry that you weren't there to hold him at the end, but I know he had nice memories of you with him even though you weren't there.
We are here if you need us!
I am sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry to hear about Doyle....what a sad surprise, because he really was looking better and you certainly can't blame yourself for anything. You worked hard to try to get him well, and sometimes reptiles just go the other way very quickly. So sorry Maggie !

It has been no problem, Maggie - I just wanted you to know we were all here supporting you!

You did an awesome job with Doyle and although it is heartbreaking that you lost him, Im glad that he got to spend the last week of his life with you!

You are going to make a brilliant beardie mom to another little critter out there!

HUGS!

I am so very sorry. You were amazing with Doyle, never doubt that. Imagine what a wonderful life he was having once you got him. I'm sure he fought the best he could. Hang on to those cuddle memories as they were the best he had. If not for you, he would never have had them...Rest in Peace, Doyle.

Sorry to hear. :(

I'm sure it'll be hard not to, but don't blame yourself. You did more than most would do to help him, but he was probably too far gone to be saved.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I just got back from camping and had a voice message from Doyle's vet. I was incorrect about his blood work - it was horrible. The copy I received have everything in the normal ranges so I assumed that since it didn't state anything was high or low that he was OK. He had severe kidney disease and his pancreas was having difficulty as well. Dr Maas suspects that it was the fungal infection that caused all the issues, and the eyes were just an outward sign. He mentioned a disease which sounded like "mah-neez-e-opsis" but I have no idea how to correctly spell it to even do any research on it. I feel so much relief knowing that I really did do all that I could for him, and made him as comfortable as I could.

Here is the blood work in case anyone is interested.

Hello Maggie,

Oh yes, I see his uric acid at 18.6 & his AST at 59 which is his kidneys & liver levels. He was in renal failure when you got him & his liver wasn't doing any better.
The calcium to phosphorus ratio was terribly imbalanced as well. I am surprised he hung on so long! It was meant that he found you to have some love in his life.
Doyle was precious & you were his angel for helping him!
I hope you are doing a little better.

Hi Tracie - I was hoping you would see the blood results and help explain them a bit since I haven't had a chance to speak to Dr Maas as of yet. Thank you so much for explaining it to me. What should the Ca:p ratio be in a healthy beardie? I know he wasn't getting the proper nutrition before but I didn't realize just how bad it was. Any idea on the type of disease Dr Maas mentioned?

I'm doing much better, especially now having proof that it wasn't my fault that he died. Going camping was good, and on the way there I found a new beardie. He has a thread in Introductions with his photo. I haven't figured out when to have him shipped yet - I need to figure out a morning with work on when I can come in late and make sure the viv is OK.

Do you have information on how to clean out the viv? I used a bleach/water solution but upped the amount of bleach. Do you think that will be sufficient to make sure my new beardie will be OK in there?

Hello Maggie,

No, that doesn't sound familiar. I even looked in my surgery book! Maybe you could get a better spelling on it?
Ideally, the calcium to phosphorus ratio should be 2:1 or at the most 3:1 being the calcium is higher or two times the amount of the phosphorus. The calcium is very high which is probably due to his not absorbing his calcium & his bones possibly being leached to maintain the blood calcium.
If you do use bleach, be sure to rinse it out very well. You could also use a steamer also to disinfect the tank.
It definitely was not your fault that he did not make it. You made his life much better & I know he appreciated it. I am sorry you lost him.

If you need anything, just ask.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!

Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
