This is my new beardie Doyle - I pick him up on Saturday. I'm curious what is wrong with his eye. I really can't afford a vet visit right now as I'm having to pay to get his viv all set up (the current set up I'm getting with him is poor at best). I'm adopting him from a family that doesn't have time for him, so I'm more than willing to do what it takes to make sure he is a healthy, happy boy. Any thoughts on what the issue with his eye could be? I can take him to the vet in a couple weeks, but if there is anything I can learn in the interim that would be fabulous.

It looks like it *COULD* be retained shed. Although it could be some sort of eye infection (the eye itself looks a little puffy in that photo) - that substrate might have caused that.

Could you get a photo of just his head and eye? That might make it a little clearer.

Thanks for the quick reply! I can post a better picture tomorrow morning when I get pick him up. This is just what his current mom was able to send to me this morning. His owner had said that he used to have sand in the viv, and that when the eye thing had popped up she switched to bark. I'm happy to be able to give him a better home with tile instead of bark.

Bark can also cause eye infections. Im so glad your going to be using tile!

Have you got a herp vet lined up? Sometimes its a good idea to be prepared for these things as they can be few and far between!

I hope his eye is ok. The more im looking at it, the more I think it may need vet attention but hopefully we will be able to see it more clearly tomoro and talk about what to do in the meantime.

I am doing research on herp vets right now just to be ready. His owner said it's been like that for a long time, but it just doesn't sit right with me. He's my first beardie, and a rescue to boot. I want his new home to be as good as possible!

When you do find one, it might be worthwhile to try and make an appointment in advance. We only have one over here and sometimes it can be VERY difficult to get an appointment!

There is definitely something going on with it. Just an idea (someone may correct me) but you might want to get some saline solution and run it over the eye (just around the outsides - he will probably close his eye anyway) - it could just be a buildup of skin or perhaps he has had a bad UV and its been caused by that. I found the saline good whenever Phoebe had conjunctivitis - just be careful not to pour it directly into the eye. You could maybe put a little on a q-tip (is that what they are called over there) and gently dab it around there.

I agree, it does look like retained shed, but unusually thickened. Saline + Q -tip is probably a good idea, possibly some type of a.b.cream as well.

Here are better pictures of his eyes. Doyle has an appointment with the vet in about 3 hours so after I find out the verdict I will let you all know. He's underweight, but by how much I have yet to find out. He hasn't been given D3 with his calcium, and didn't have a proper UVB bulb.

This is his 'good' eye

This is the eye that worries me more.

It *could* be a very VERY bad case of conjunctivitis caused by the horrible coil. But those look really bad. With his eyes like that, I would suggest that you give him a couple of days without uv to allow his eyes to heal. The vet may give you some ointment for them or perhaps suggest rinsing with saline solution- you can just dab the saline around his eye.

I looked at ur other thread and it looks like his eye sight is ok- he looked very happy to be sitting in the sun. Let us know how the appointment goes!

Wow, poor thing. I wonder if it's some type of fungus. I"ll p.m. Tracie [ Drache613] to see if she has any thoughts.

Glad to see you moved these newer pictures over to the health section.

Like I said In your previous thread, the eye looks worse than what you first showed us in your introduction thread.
Were you able to ask her how it happened?

The thing that concerns me the most is it looks like there is excrete coming out of the eye.

Very interested to see what your vet thinks of it.

Hello,

Oh my, so did you get to the vet?
Wow, both of the eyes are definitely infected to a greater & lesser degree of each other. I hope the vet did a culture at least, or gave you some ointment for the eyes, along with some antibiotics.
For now, I would rinse out the eyes daily, with a sterile saline solution at least 2 times per day. Let me know what type of ointment or other medications you received from the vet & what the course of action you are taking.
He could also have a respiratory type of infection also, but it is hard to tell.
I agree, it could also be a slight fungal issue, too.

We are still at the vet. He weighed in at 489 grams and 20 inches. They were able to obtain a very stinky fecal sample. He has pinworms for sure that we will be treating. A scraping was taken of his eyes and the vet is suspicious of a fungal infection. His eye are puffy and have excess fluid around them. Since his previous owner stated this whole thing started 2 years ago we are doing some bloodwork too so we don't treat him if his organs are under stress. I'm happy to pay the bills knowing and hoping he is going to be better in the long run but the fact that his previous owners were so careless about him makes me so mad.

The vets here are great though. Since the roaches I ordered won't be here for awhile they are giving me some lobster roaches for him to get by. Both the vet, Dr Maas, and the tech Aaron have beardies and bred them at one point. They are being so nice to Doyle and his blackbeard display.

Glad to hear you have some experienced help down at the vets.
It was very nice of them to give you some roaches too.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
