Can I put the CHE light on the metal cover of the tank? I read they get pretty hot. I know it may sound like a dumb question!

Yes, they get hot but not that hot!

If there are any plastic parts around the top I would cover them with foil to provide some shielding. Otherwise they won't get hot enough to cause a problem for the metal and will be safe if kept out of reach. Physical contact near the bulb can cause burns though.
