I've had two beardies shipped to be via Reptile Express and they both came in tupperware-type containers with holes around the top, then surrounded with styrofoam with holes poked through the cardboard and styrofoam.

I prefer bags, especially for larger lizards. There isn't a lot to hang on to in a container, so they can get bounced around pretty hard. In a bag you can use lots of shredded and crumpled newspaper, which acts as good cushion, but also provides something for the lizard to cling to for stability.

I have never shipped a reptile or had one shipped to me, however when I got my last beardie from a breeder he showed me how he does it & it looked very effective. Beardie goes in a snake bag, which then goes in a disposable tupperware (with dime-sized air holes). The space between the snake bag & tupperware walls gets stuffed lightly with newspaper. The tupperware then goes into a cardboard shipping box which has been lined/insulated with a sheet of styrofoam on all sides. The space between the tupperware & the styrofoam walls is also packed with newspaper and there's quarter-sized air holes punched straight through the outer cardboard shipping box and the styrofoam walls on the inside. Slap a sticker on that says something like "Fragile - This side up - Live harmless reptile" and it's done. I know it may sound kind of complicated, but it looked really very easy in person. The only thing I'm not sure about is where he got the styrofoam liner for the inside of the cardboard shipping box.

SYR [ the experts ] and Xtina both described the standard shipping method. Only thing to add to that is you actually don't want quarter size holes in the box, maybe very small ones....because the large holes could compromise the strength of the box. It would also allow too much heat/cold to enter during shipping. Boxes + styrofoam are not at all airtight, but they "breathe" , so the reptiles don't run out of air.

You can find insulated shipping boxes as either one-off shipping kits or in bulk at our site ShipYourReptiles.com, along with a step by step guide on how to safely and responsible pack and ship your live reptiles : )

As for the holes, maybe Xtina meant quarter INCH size holes? A philips screwdriver is about the right size for punching air holes. You want a bit of air exchange, but def not holes big enough to stick a finger, or thumb, through. We recommend two holes on two sides of the box, four total, for most boxes 15x11x7 or smaller.

Eeep yes, I meant quarter INCH sized holes! ...looked like they could've been made with a screwdriver. Sorry, must've thrown myself off with my own previous statement about the "dime-sized" air holes in the tupperware container. Silly me, apologies for the confusion!

Use Reptiles Express! Debbie guided me thru purchasing a box, snake bag and discounted overnite Fedex shipping when I got Big Bertha. Bert came from San Diego, CA to St Louis, MO with out
a scratch and Debbie was very helpful and nice! I would definitely use their service again! Nice shipping box, well made and well labelled!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
