i also worry about germs. I have done quite a bit of reading and have not seen anything yet on this topic. I am a classroom teacher and worry about germs (for my students and my dragon)

you really need to worry about the germs from their poop or mouth. but it comes more from their poop.
really, dogs are dirtier than bearded dragons.
yes, you should wash your hands after handling them. but you should wash your hands after touching ANY animal.

just don't lick you beardie.

I know you were trying to be serious here but just the image I have of someone licking their beardy made me lulz!

I know its kinda stressful worrying about germs, I never do but I always wash my hands after handling my dragons.. but like bunnyrut said dogs are more filthy than dragons!

THIS. As stated, your typical beardie is going to be cleaner than a dog, which most people wouldn't even think twice about touching. There really isn't much reason for concern. I understand not wanting to get sick, but as long as you keep a clean enclosure your beardie wont be covered in bacteria. When was the last time you saw your beardie rolling around on bugs/dead animals or eating their own feces? Dogs do both of those things on a daily basis and yet people find it adorable when dogs try to shove their tongues in their mouths :puke:

Just sayin :)

I wash my hands before and after touching Moose or any of his things. I clean up after his poos with a steam cleaner/oven if possible. I don't sleep in clothes Moose has been on, and if he's been on my sheets I wash them before using them again. But I don't bother changing right after holding him or cleaning the floors he's been on. Just don't let your beardie on the kitchen counters. As for the tub, just clean it however you do. As long as you rinse well and obviously let it air out before re entry... I usually use kaboom and a magic eraser.

Dogs do in fact carry salmonella, amongst quite a few other things beardies don't. Trust us when we say beardies are safe pets. As long as you clean up their poop (before they get bored of hiding from it and step all in it, that is ) they won't transmit salmonella to you. Just keep their enclosure clean and bathe them often. Of course you should wash your hands after handling, but you really don't have much to worry about :)

Just for fun, here's a list of *some* of the things a dog can transmit to humans: http://webcanine.com/2007/zoonotic-diseases-what-dogs-pass-to-people/

I've had Jango for almost 2 years now.. I kiss him and everything never got sick so far.. I give him a bath in the tub every other day.. give him a good scrub and keep his viv (tank) clean. I clean the tub out with a cleaner that has bleach in it. I clean his tank with a cleaner made for cleaning out their tanks. He runs around my house like a dog would, but I keep an eye on him so he don't go where he shouldn't. I have an almost 9 year old son and he hasn't gotten sick from it either. Just keep everything clean and sanatized and you should be fine.

Just wash your hands after handling, use bleach on any household surfaces and use a disinfectant in the cage. I use chlorhexidine daily for cleaning up poop and just got some coccidia killing disinfectant from beardeddragon.co for weekly scrubbing. You can also use the chlorhexidine glubonate on your dragon if they step in poo, or get a dragon soap for bathing. I recommend the almond scent, it's great! Honestly I worry more about transferring germs between animals as I have multiple reptiles, than I do about myself getting ill.

Honestly, I recommend the chlorhexidine and professional disinfectant over anything you're going to get from a store. The chlorhexidine gluconate is used in veterinary medicine and human medicine for disinfecting surfaces and also as a topical antimicrobial. It's even used at diluted strength as a mouthwash, and a bottle of it will last forever as you just dilute a few capfuls in a spray bottle. It's safe to use on you, your animals, your household and it won't hurt your dragon if it's on a surface and the dragon licks it. The pink professional anti-coccidial disinfectant is marketed as one of very few proven to kill coccidia. You can get them at any place online, this is just one of the stores that sells them: Chlorhexidine and Anti-Coccidial They also sell a soap that's safe for washing dragons: Dragon Soap

That said, white vinegar/rubbing alcohol/hydrogen peroxide can be bought at any store and mixed up in a bottle and used to clean just about anything. You could also use diluted bleach. The most important part would be to rinse it well and let it dry completely before putting it back in, because you don't want your animal coming into contact with those substances. I'd smell it to make sure there aren't any fumes coming from it before putting it back in.

I've been a reptile owner for 9 years now.. My iguana is still alive and very healthy. When she was only about 2 feet long I let her sleep with me cause otherwise she'd take her claws and put them in the top of her screen cage and pull down and make the most god awful noise. My solution, give her her way and put her on my chest, pull the covers over her and she'd go right to sleep. I did that for about 8 months... Never got sick.

Honestly I just watched ABC's The Lookout and one section followed a family on a trip and swabbed everything they touched including their children's hands before and after playing in ball pits ... The results were crazy, needless to say your bearded dragon is the least of your worries....

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
