Trust me, I have done that multiple times. I've taken him to the window for an hour (his favorite place), out to run on the floor, on my bed, for a bath, to eat, etc. It doesn't matter. The second I put him back in there (no matter the length of time he's been out) he is right back at it.

Charlie is about to brumate, and I just thought of something! Are they supposed to get their vits and calcium somehow still? Since they won't be eating how do they get them?

If it were me, I would throw it out immediately. Go with your gut on this one. If you've heard horror stories and it has an offending smell, then it probably isn't safe for your animal :/ Just my opinion.
