    Homemade Silkworm Chow?

I spent a lot of time looking into this. I finally got someone to send me the ingredients printed on their commercial silkworm chow and it was mostly made up of dry powdered mulberry leaves with standard starchy fillers to stretch it out. It's basically the only viable alternative if you don't...

Substitutes for greens to feed Beardy?

Hopefully he'll try it- I know at least with prickly pear cactus the red color is supposed to attract them. My beardie did a double take when he saw them and was pretty excited to take a taste.

    A question for the group.

Ideally you want uvb bulb to span most of/all of the tank if it's florescent. What wattage bulb is the one you have? Florescent bulb's UVB depth penetration usually goes about 8"-10" into the tank, so you have to make sure your beardie has a basking point within 8" of the light bulb. I...

    exo-terra excavation clay?

It's basically like clay, and it sets very hard. They can't really *tunnel* in it, you're actually meant to pre-mold the tunnels before you use it. It's soft enough that something like a uromastyx or a skink might very slowly carve out a cave, I don't really see a beardie with the attention span...

Substitutes for greens to feed Beardy?

I'm not sure if you can get this brand where you are but San Francisco Bay brand makes a "Healthy Herp" frozen line including packaged mixed greens (frozen into mini ice cubes), it's a pretty nice variety. If he's a picky eater he might not touch it though, and it'll never fully replace fresh...

    Normal shed frequency?

I have trouble counting with my beardie, cuz he sheds in parts- one arm, then 1/2 his tail and on like that. Since he's no longer growing, it seems to be pretty random.

Bearded Dragon Perception Is Off & Is Not Seeing Well

Why did the vet put her on Baytril? That's an antibiotic... Metronidazole (Flagyl) is generally used to treat coccidia, so I'm assuming that's what he found (very common). With all those drugs in her just make sure you keep her hydrated and even though the Oxbow has probiotics in it, if you...

    Beardie not shedding tail?

My beardie never sheds his tail at the same time as other body parts. As they get older they just shed different parts of their body at a time. I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as he sheds it before going thru another shed.

    Nail Clipping

Provided you can hold him still, you'll be fine just using your own nail clippers, or little cat clippers if you're feeling less confident. You can also just file them. Personally, I use the tile and my beardie's nails are always nicely trimmed. Makes me wish I could do that with my other lizard!

    Pinworm count

Thanks Budo- it does seem to be a pretty bad infestation, but considering the conditions he came from, I'm lucky that he doesn't have more issues. He was a skeleton when I got him, and was kept in a tank with a UV bulb that hadn't been replaced in years and household incandescent bulb in his...

    A turk roach question

I'd say yes, provided you don't have AC. Their breeding will stop when it gets cold tho. Let me give you a warning- THEY ARE REALLY, REALLY FAST!! Seriously, crickets ain't got nuthin on them. I've dropped a few by accident and if you don't immediately step on them and squish them they will be...

    Newbie question... =)

A sandfire is going to be much more red/orange, a sunburst is going to be mostly yellow with orange/red markings. Either way, it's gonna be gorgeous, enjoy watching it color up as it matures!

    Buying a female..

Sounds like she's undernourished and probably full of worms. If you do get her, she won't be breedable until you fix all her issues (which probably includes at least some level of calcium deficiency). That's assuming you'll be able to reverse the damage done to her body to the point where she...

    looking for help on food

I get a local farm share all summer, local, tasty, organic veggies. My beardie gets first pick and my boyfriend second :P Reptile Salad looks pretty tasty, I like the custom mixes. Not really worth it when I can just go to the grocery store, but I like that I could have them sent to my house...

Beardie keeping his eyes shut now during day

Huh, weird, the Instructions and Safety Warnings say something completely different than the box...they also make a flood and a spot with different requirements. The one I have I bought on clearance, in older packaging (and covered in dust), so it's possible they must have changed their warnings.

    growth rate

One last thing to check for is internal parasites. They hog all the nutrition from your beardie and so even though he eats a lot, he doesn't grow the way he should.

Questions about a new one coming home soon

I'm so impressed with the care you and your store is providing for this very lucky animal!! Good quality UV and plenty of food is the best thing for her right now. It's amazing how much *less* calcium supplementation a beardie needs when they have the resources (ei good UV light and vit D) to...

Beardie keeping his eyes shut now during day

Don't feel too bad, it's amazing how many of these bulbs don't let you know about the min distances. In fact, T-Rex lists the minimum distance on their 100w bulb at 6 inches! I would advise filing a complaint with the company and including pictures of your poor little guy. Make it clear that you...

    Pinworm count

I'll start this off by saying I have a vet appointment next week, so I do plan on getting professional help. This is just to fulfill my own personal geekiness. Plus, this way I can run regular fecals to make sure nothing comes back. I regularly foster beardies and other herps (never allowed in...

Need Suggestions - baby not eating well

+1 for squash baby food, it seems to be a hit with the sickly baby beardies. Also, Pheonix worms and baby hornworms are great. Try feeding any food on an attractive color plate. Whenever my beardie is refusing to eat I feed him on a neon green plate and he can't resist! (Although usually he...
