Campbell Jane *Very Sad News*

Sorry, no pictures yet! She's still at the clinic, but I'll try and get some up here later tonight.

Where to start? She is in terrible shape - even worse than Jasper was when he first came in, according to the vet. She is 4-5 years old, but is the size of a juvie. She is barely responsive - she just hangs limp in your hands, even when turned on her back. She apparently suffered a jaw injury 6-8 months ago that was never treated. There is a lot of blood and discolouration around her mouth, and her jaw is slightly misaligned. I think she has mouth rot too. She also has a lot of mucus in her mouth, which may be a symptom of an RI. The worst thing is that she has a huge mass in her mouth/throat area. The vet won't be able to see exactly what it is and if it can be removed until he can sedate her, but she's not healthy enough for that at this point. She is dehydrated, showing early signs of MBD, and is probably chock full of parasites. The vet could feel some hard masses in her belly, which could either be impaction or just the result of gut stasis. I'll know more tonight after I find out the results of the x-rays and the ultrasound. The vet opted not to do bloodwork on her today as it would be too stressful for her. He says her prognosis is guarded at best.

I went out and got some unflavoured Pedialyte and some baby food - chicken, butternut squash, and apple. I also have a big container of the Repti-Gel that the vet gave me to use with Jasper and June. She's in no condition for live feeders or salad yet. My Mom (bless her!) bought a wonderful fleece bed like the one Jasper had for her to sleep on. She's been sleeping on the glass bottom of an aquarium for God knows how long, so I'm sure she'll enjoy the fleecy goodness. Jasper sure loved his - after I put it in there, he almost never left it!

That's all I've got for now. My stomach is in knots waiting for the vet to call. I want to bring her home and get started.

Sandi, I understand why your stomach is in knots, mine would be wondering when, or if I could bring her home.

Poor girl.
I really do hope she will be ok. And I know that you and your vet will do all you can to make her happy and comfy.
Please keep us updated. I will be keeping good thoughts for her.

I think I now understand how lucky I was to get the girl I got in the condition she was in...I have to wonder how people can DO this sort of thing to an animal. She is in my prayers. Please update soon.

Oh poor baby well she has one thing going for her and that is you.If she has any chance at all it will be because of your care.I am happy she found you if not for anything else but so she will know love and peace regardless of how long that may be.I will keep her in my prayers and I really do hope she makes a full recovery for both of you.

Well, here she is. You can see what lousy shape she's in. Can you believe this is an adult beardie??? She weighs 238 grams.





The vet decided to do some blood work after all, although he couldn't do a full panel because he couldn't take much blood from her. Her liver and kidney values are pretty close to normal, which is better than I was expecting. I don't know her ionized calcium level - that will have to wait until our next visit. Her x-rays showed that she has a bunch of "stuff" in her system, but fortunately it appears to be mealworm shells as opposed to calcisand. Hopefully once I get her hydrated she'll be able to pass them. I literally have a bag of medications for her - so many that I can't remember them all right now. I do know that I have an antibiotic and some liquid calcium, among others. Once she's hydrated, I'll start the antibiotics. She got some subcutaneous fluids and a B12 shot today, and it seems to have perked her up a little bit. At least she's holding her head up now. She's going to get more sub-q fluids tomorrow. I'm holding her on my shoulder right now while I wait for the temperature to stabilize in her viv. I can hear a lot of clicking and popping, indicating an RI. The vet said that the enrofloxacin should take care of it though. Once she's doing better, he'll put her under and check out the thing in her mouth. It looks awful - dark purple and just huge.

I decided on a name for her - Campbell. It's a Scottish name meaning "crooked mouth". And she certainly has a crooked mouth, the poor thing. I think it suits her better than Velma, which is the other name I was considering.

Oh my she does look like she has had a rough go of it but it also looks like she still has a spark in her eye.I am betting you will do wonders with this little girl!You are so wonderful for taking her in.Jasper would be very proud of you.Please keep us posted on her progress.She has some very big shoes to fill but she looks like she is up for the job :wink: I love her new fleece tell your mom she did good

I feel better for you now, Sandi. I've been concerned for you as I know how it feels to loose a loved beardie. I'm glad you found another beardie that you could help and love. I think you need her as much as she needs you. You will get used to that long skinny thing hanging off her back legs :lol: It may take awhile, tho after Jasper. We will be praying for her recovery.

Oh, what a sweetie she is as well as you for giving her a loving home. :love5: I'll just bet that you'll see a change in her daily with all of your great care. Campbell surely loves the fleece bed, no doubt about that. Your mom did a great job even though it wasn't for a cat, sounds like your mom has had a change of heart regarding reptiles now.
Anyway, please keep us updated on her progress. Both of you are in our thoughts Sandi and we are also here if you need us.

I just finished giving her a soak. She drank a bit in the tub, and I managed to clean up some of the stuff on her face. Fortunately it looks like it's all dirt and not an infection or necrosis. It looks like she might actually be white and orange underneath all of that dirt. It's really on there though... I don't think I'll see her true colours until after she sheds next. I also got her to take about half a ml of Pedialyte, and I washed her mouth with Nolvadent. It looks like her nostrils are full of something, but it's hard to tell what. I hope she sheds soon and gets rid of all this stuff!
