Wood stain?

Non toxic stain would be the best bet. I think they even have food grade versions for countertops etc but that might be overkill a bit. Are you planning to seal the wood with something like polyurethane after staining it?

I got a water based stain plus polyurethane. I also have a outdoor mod podge that I plan on sealing it with to make it water proof
