We're going to get bulk crickets (either 500 or 1000). What is the best thing to keep them in? I heard those large rubber box containers. Also, is clear or a color better, or does it even matter?

Thanks!

You can use a glass fish tank or a plastic rubbermaid/sterilite container. Clear is fine for crickets. Just make sure there's enough stuff for them to climb on/under/around so they aren't trampling each other.

if we get a rubbermaid container, obviously they need air, so is it best to poke a few holes on the lid? also, since i have no idea where to buy the egg crates you see with them, what is a good alternate to put in the tank for them?

I just cut a big square in the lid. You can put a screen over it but it's not really necessary, unless you have a lot of other bugs in your house that could get in with the crickets, cuz the crickets getting out through a hole in the lid isn't likely.

I use the cardboard tubes from paper towels and toilet paper. Also, pieces of cardboard/paper cup carriers from food places work well (something like this).

edit:

Here's an example of how I use the paper towel rolls:

I bought one of the big dog food bins from walmart (had the door on top to scoop food out). Opened the door, push screen wire over the whole, used the rubber seal that was already there and works like a charm. I tried the rubbermaid container with vaseline to keep them from jumping out, but some of the crickets commited suicide by getting their feet adhered to the vaseline, then more suicide crickets that would just leap into the sky when I opened the rubbermaid.

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
