My beardie's tank is normally at 104 in the basking light and now it dropped dramatically...but it's also really cold in our house..even though the heater is on! The temperature in the tank is 87 degreees...I'm really scared but Percy is acting normal...better than when I got him a few days ago. What's going on with the temperature in the tank? What do I do? I'm scared to go to bed in case it gets too cold! Help!!

Hello,

Is the tank beside or by a window? Is the tank on the floor or up off of the floor?
What wattage of bulb are you using? You could add a ceramic heat emitter to help supplement the heating during the day & during the night, too.
What type of thermometer do you use?
Wintertime is so hard to keep the temperatures up sometimes.

The Ceramic heat emitters are excellent, and I have one for every tank so I can supplemeent the temps in the winter.

My beardie's tank is on my bedroom floor...the floor is carpet and no where near a window. He has a thermometer that comes with the tank...the stick on. My dad got the whole set-up..and I noticed I needed to get a new thermometer. I have a A Reptisun 5.0 UVB light for one side and a Critter lightbulb for basking on the other side- 75watt(120V). It normally gets 104 in the basking area...but the past two days it's been ranging from 104- to the LOWEST 90..but it's gotten pretty cold lately in his tank. It got a lot higher today-it's 97 but I'm still worried.

Go to lowes or home depot or walmart (garden section) and get a indoor/outdoor thermometer with a probe ($12). The temps on what you have are terrible.

Holler and scream and beg...it's Christmas your dad will go buy you one...tell him your beardie will die without it!!! Hehehe

Put the probe under the basking light, anchored by a slate stone or river rock for basking, then monitor the outdoor temp. That is the temp under the probe. That temp should be between 100 and 102.

You need to get a ceramic heat emitter for at night of it gets below 65 degrees F. These are not cheap, $30 for the dome and heat emitter. And you need the reptisun 10 regular tube UVB florescent bulb (pet mountain has good prices).

Please post a pic of your setup and that will help.

Thank you so much! I'm going to talk to him and beg him to buy me the things you mentioned. For the ceramic heat emitter...does that only need to be used at night? Would I keep all the lightse on and just add the heat emitter or would I turn something else off?

Here's my set-up. From the pictures...it looks super messy :oops: It's not really that messy...my dad bought sand for me and right when I got him I threw out the sand and replaced it with newspaper until I can get like fake grass or stone slab...or whatever you call it((;

My dad said he will take me to the petstore tomorrow...the lightbulb is the long one right? Could you take a picture of what it looks like? I googled it and I got a ton of different images :banghead:

The heat emitter doesn't put out light. It screws into one of the fluker/clamp lamp or other CERAMIC dome lamps WITHOUT the dimmer.

Get like a 60 watt with a dome lamp specifically for it with just the on/off NOT the dimmer. You can use it just at night and turn off the heat lamp. Or you can use it during the day to supplement your basking bulb. It depends on how cold your house/ room where the dragon is.

If you house is 50 degrees F, then you may need the heat emitter and basking bulb. Or if your house stays at 70 deg F then justa basking bulb is great. If your house gets below 65 Deg F at night then set the heat emitter.

Without the indoor/outdoor thermometer probe you can't effectively measure temps. Those stick ons are inaccurate by 20 degrees sometimes.

Give me your tank demensions including height and the watt basking light, I might be able to estimate what you need. I keep my house at 70 deg to 65 in the winter, I only set the heat emitter on cold nights and put it on and turn basking off at bedtimes. My Beardie tanks at 15 inches tall and I use 75 watt basking bulbs with a dimmer switch so I can get the basking temps at 100 to 102. My tanks are 48 inches long so cool side is 70 to 75 degrees.

If you cry and beg like all good kids your dad will relent. I know this because I was one of those kids. You need what you need and you have to take care of your precious pet :) Hehehehe, can you tell, I have lots of neighbor kids who love to come to my house!!

Here are some pics of my set ups. You need the longer light strip (like a 20 inch aquarium strip with the 18 inch reptisun 10), get rid of the blue/purple bulb (you don't need that) The pet stores like to sell you all that crazy crap.

This last one is my Frilled Dragon cage

I have 48 inch reptisun 10 in the big cages and then also a 18 inch in front with a heat emitter lamp at one end and a basking bulb at the other so the whole top is covered.

The problem with the basking light I have...it has this black little button type thing. It doesn't turn off or dim...so Im confused what it's for. It's a purple bulb from a brand called Cricket-75 watt(120V). I am all new to this, and my dad bought the whole setup so I'm pretty confused what all this stuff means :study: I feel so frustrated :banghead:

What is the heat lamp? Is that the black longish hood on the top of the tank...grr I feel so stupid!

Looking at your set up, I would take out the purple bulb and replace it with the heat emitter?

Take all the lights you have off. One long fish tank style light....20 inch that takes an 18 inch bulb. Put the Reptisun 10 from pet mountain in that,

Get a flukers 75 watt dimmer switch dome/clamp lamp and stick a 75 watt basking bulb from zoo med in it. That is the basking light,

Get a flukers or clamp lamp 75 watt NON dimmer / Plain on off dome lamp and get a 60 wattt heat ceramic heat emitter.

Put the aquarium strip along the middle to back of the top and the other two on opposite sides like my pics.

Then use the heat lamp and light in day and only heat emitter if it is too cold or below 65 degrees at night.

The third picture is a dome lamp. You have two. One with heat light and one with ceramic heat emitter. These are ceramic dome lamps.

The longer light in front and the long one along the back on the second pic are the reptisuns

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
