So how did your beardies get their names?

There are so many interesting names I see here on these boards, I'm just curious how did we come up with them?
Freddie was named after the Beardie in Nims' Island. Bad movie, Jody Foster is just so wrong in that role. But anyways, my 9 year old daughter who had wanted a Beardie for a while announced that when we get a beardie she's gonna name him Fred. And she did, and HE really is a he named Fred. I was worried that it would havta be Frederina for a while. That's my boring story. Liz

Sullivan (Sully) 3 yrs - Family name taken after my ex-gf's uncle, a high school science teacher.
Melbourne (Mel) 2 months - Named for Melbourne, Australia. I'm planning on getting him a mate and naming her Sydney.

Hey theres nothing wrong with a boy name for girls ! lol. my baby MJ is a girl.. well im like 80% sure she is.. lol. But we named her after Michael ! (michael jackson)

Let me start by mentioning that I have FIVE sons..lol..and they like star wars!

Rich and I could not come up with a name we BOTH liked...He wanted Empress and I said Lets go with a name from Star wars. My 4 year old wanted to name her Jesus..lol. Rich wanted to get a male..and name him Vadar (after Darth Vadar of course) But I definately wanted a female. It was my 16yr old who said what about Padme (prounouced Pad a may). She is the young queen of the planet Naboo. So we got our baby and Padme it is (Padme Amidala is her full name..lol)!! If we decide to get more in the future..they are already named. The next will be a male and his name will fittingly be Anakin (Padme's husband)...and any others will be Luke and Leia (Pamde's twins).

My hubby isn't a huge fan of animals in the house, but because he loves me he goes along with it. :wink: I got a crested gecko that I hoped was a boy and my husband liked him enough that he picked the name Aramis. Of course, then Aramis matured and lacked the appendages to be a male, and he became Aryana. For my Birthday, he got me a beardie and I still liked the name Aramis, so the name just transferred over to him. I think it fits perfectly. He is such a cuddler and lovey boy. Everyone on here has such wonderful names for their beardies!! If I get a female beardie, I think I would name her Ember.

So the day came for me to go and get my first beardie. I had spent time talking to the nice knowledgeable people at petsmart and everything.(HA!) I did all my research and I was totally prepared for this new addition. (NOT!) I went to the store got everything I thought I needed picked up my little baby and went home. I wasn't home an hour and I realized I had the wrong sized fixture for the light that I was told to buy. Time to make the 30 minute drive back to petsmart. At that very moment the heavens opened and I swear we had a monsoon. It took me almost an hour to get back to the pet store, the roads were flooding, but I was on a mission! Got to the store, got what I needed and back out into the monsoon I went. An hour later and the baby was good to go, or so I thought. I had no idea that this tiny little thing could turn a perfectly good day upside down. When I sat down to marvel at his cage and him basking looking oh so cute and innocent I said "you sure made a lot of chaos today didn't you?" There you have it Chaos was named. Little did I know that was just the beginning and I had jinxed myself. Then I found this site and everything that I thought I knew was tossed out the window along with a bunch of supplies that were completely wrong for my little Chaos!

Gibby- Came named. Apparently his full name is "Giblet" because.. he looked like giblets? I dunno. I prefer to pretend his full name is Gibson.

Dora- Came named after (duh) Dora the Explorer. Was named by a 4 year old, lol.

Miss Priss- So named because when we got her, I couldn't get her to eat ANYTHING. So Prissy she became. Of course, she now eats everything in sight. so it doesn't really apply, but the name stuck.

Inara- Named after the lovely girl from "Firefly". This was a name we considered for the baby before we found out Tristan was a boy, but rejected because we didn't think she'd appreciate realizing she'd been named after a space prostitute! Means "shining" in Arabic, and she's a bright shiny yellow.

I like to think they do, although it's been my experience that animals tend to react more to sound than difinitive words.. For example, if I just say "Nero", then I don't get a reaction, however if I half sing his name twice "Newo, Newo", he pops his head up in response. Same with Hercules.. if I say "Herkyyyy", he wiggles and looks in my direction, but none if I just say "Hercules".. nothing.

Sweetie-Boo will even give me the stink-eye if she hears me say her name... "Sweeeeee-Boo".

So like I said, I like to think they understand their names, but I guess it's left up to interpretation. Heck, with as much as I talk to all of them, you'd think they would pick up a word or two :mrgreen:

Twitch always looks if we say "Twitchie" but yes as Robin said, not just in normal conversation but in a sing-song voice or babytalk SO many people would say I'm insane if they were to see me with my beardies :wink: My cats definetly know their names- if I yell at one, that one runs and the other one smirks :lol: I would say Twitch and Hermes both certainly know our voices as opposed to other peeps'
