Awww lucky. I always wanted to take a behavioral psych class.
I'm taking (I have finals next week, actually) "conservation biology", "Biology and Conservation of wild birds", "Birds, humans and the environment", and a supernormous bird ID lab.
.... Can you tell I like birds? I bet you couldn't.
Next quarter (my last quarter as an undergrad, EVER), I'm taking physiology and calculus. blerg :/
Ohh, I love birds. I have birds. They're totally cool. I really wish, though, that I had studied physical anthropology. That would've been cool. Ahh ... to be young again ...
Speaking of birds, one of mine just looked at me and said, "bellybutton." It means he wants me to scratch his tummy. :)

So do you have an african grey then? That's a pretty smart association!
What sort of birds do you have? Curious minds!

I have 5 pacific parrotlets. They are a lot smarter than I ever expected. I only planned on the one, but animals seem to find me, so now there are 5.
They do a lot of amazing things. I've taught them all not to bite by saying "gentle beak" and touching their beaks. Well, Hemingway will say it and then bite me. And then laugh. :banghead:
Icarus is the "bellybutton" guy. He also one time touched his beak to my finger, said "ow," touched his beak to his toe, said "ow," and laughed. It's creepy when they laugh, because it sounds like my laugh, but on helium.
Piggy and Twitter were full-on rescues, so I'm still working with them - they don't really talk (and the girls usually don't, which Piggy is), and they will only come to me. But they all give kisses and say "birdie birdie" and sing the "mahna mahna" song from the Muppets. :)
For little birds (about 4"), they are really, really cool. Much more interactive and ... just intelligent than I ever expected. :)

Wow! I love parrotlets! They are super adorable and tiny.
You know, birds are really super smart and I always find it amazing how they think. I used to rehab crows and sheesh, they always gave me a run for my money!
It's also super cool that you rescued two of them. Definite good karma there! Do they all stay in one aviary together?

No, they all have separate cages. Unless they're a bonded pair, parrotlets will kill each other. They're very territorial. I had actually rescued a bonded pair, Bonnie & Clyde, who now live with my mom. They are not at all tame, and my mom wasn't interested in a bird she could hold, but she liked having mine in the house when she birdsat for me, so now she just gets to talk to them, etc. They don't have a nestbox, so they're not breeding.
I have the two I rescued, and then Icarus, Hemingway, and Ranjan are brothers. I am actually Ranjan's third home, I think? He kept being returned to their breeder, Jerry, so I said I'd take him. I'm a nut. :)
I think most animals are smarter than people give them credit for. Beardies, certainly, but even fish, for instance. I had a loach who recognized me and would eat out of my hand and no one else's. I suppose you could argue that behavior like that isn't real intelligence, but I've read a lot about studies being done with octopi (puses?) that have blown my mind. As smart as dogs, at least, apparently.
Anyway ... I always expect Grendel to talk to me, because I'm so used to the birds.

Soraya, I need you to tell my Brian that I am right and he is an *****. Once at a pet store he saw a parrotlet and said "Aw look at the baby parrots" and I kept INSISTING they were not baby parrots and he said "Ummm pig- piglet; parrot- parrotlet" and it led to a giant argument about who was right.

They are not baby parrots. They are small parrots (some say the smallest species of parrot, though I believe there is some debate on this). Their closes relatives are actually the Amazon parrots, so they have that feisty attitude - they think they are much bigger than they are, and they will go after much larger animals (a dog, for instance) if they feel threatened. :angry5:
But they can be very sweet and cuddly (I have to make sure Icarus gets as much snuggle time as Grendel, or I get yelled at), they're very smart, and they do really funny things - my guys (and girl) have a lot of toys, and they all have very specific ways of playing with them. I wish I knew what was going on in those little green heads!!! :?
So, tell Brian he's wrong, and you're right. There's even a website for the International Parrotlet Society:

http://internationalparrotletsociety.org/

And make him buy you dinner.

She still remains nameless! I really want to make certain of her personality before I put a name to her, but it's proving quite difficult!
For instance:
Today, I brought her out. She sat on my hand for a while and then decided to leave. I kept moving my hand so that she had to stay on it, but then I needed to type something so I put her on my chest and off she went! I think she has poor eyesight (most likely due to her genetics) because she ran right of the side of the bed without a double-take. When I tried to pick her up she freaked out really bad and squirmed and squirmed to get away from me. I took her back to where I'm sitting and put a towel over her, which she resists but finally calms down. When I take the towel off, she climbs up to the very top of my pillow and stays there for maybe 2 hours, right next to my head. When I put her back in Khan's enclosure, she pooped.

I didn't force-feed her today but she didn't eat either. I'm glad she pooped though!

Haha, it means Grendel's just that much more interesting. Maybe he thought he'd try Hypo out but then changed his mind?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
