Rocky - Papa Smurf's brother & the rest of the Rescues!

We finally have Rocky...! I am so excited and relieved to have this little guy in my home for some TLC and rehab time. Here is a back story for those of you who don't know:

Six months ago we took in a little blue rescue bearded dragon and named him Papa Smurf for his blueness, small size and grey beard. He was surrendered to the owner of our local reptile shop by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk due to severe MBD, neglect and starvation. They tried to surrender both of their beardies, but one of them ran off into the woods and escaped. This was the first week of December 2011. The second beardie was found in a shed unexpectedly, 5 months after he disappeared and the girls surrendered him to the same shop. We got the call that Papa Smurf's long lost brother was found, and we were in disbelief, to be honest. Just blows my mind that a dragon can be lost outdoors all winter and survive. I know this is Florida but we have a wet and cold winter here, as we live in the Northern part.

We picked Rocky up today from the store, brought him home, and showed him to Sleepy Smurf. Smurf opened his eye, narrowed it and gave a tired, calculated stare as if to say, "When my nap's over ima get you." I whisked Rocky off to the bath, scrubbed him up, and let him explore the couch and living room floor.

He is alert and curious, but has severe mobility issues in his front legs, neck, shoulder and head. It will be interesting to watch him recover and gain strength. He walks with a very stiff, jerky movement, and looks to have some spasm or intermittent contracture of the right arm. I'm going to treat it as a vitamin B deficiency, because it's the easiest thing to rule out. Normal gut flora plays a key role in the synthesis of B vitamins, so I will be giving him liquid B vitamins and AcidolphiLiz, a probiotic that will increase the numbers of good gut flora, allowing the B vitamins to be synthesized and absorbed, and hopefully the spasms and contracture will stop. Wish me (and Rocky) luck! :D

The reptile shop has had him for the last month or so, and they have been doing a good job of putting weight on him, so he looks pretty good. He needs to gain muscle mass, and since he isn't malnourished, I will be giving him plenty of silkworms, since they are high in protein. They also have natural serrapeptase, an enzyme found in the silkworm, which they excrete to break down their cocoon when they become a moth. The serrapeptase breaks down inflamed tissue and helps with stiffness and pain. It is a natural anti-inflammatory that has been used in human medicine in Europe for the last 25+ years. It really helped Papa Smurf, so I am sure it will help Rocky.

Well, enough talking. Here is our newest boy, Rocky:

Here he is right when we got him home. Notice how his front legs are held close and almost underneath him. He has limited range of motion.

Here is a close up of his sweet face. The reptile shop really worked to get him to a healthy weight and he looks pretty good. :D

" I close my eyes and pretend I am not sitting in water...me no likey."

He finally did relax and begin to enjoy the warm water and my attention. I keep saying his name over and over so he can learn it.
He almost looks like Papa Smurf in this picture.

King of the couch! It's uncanny how they settle in when they look around and see they are in a home and not the reptile shop. Papa did the same thing, but it took longer because Papa was so critical and sickly. Papa lived in a daze for several days before he seemed to notice his surroundings. At least Rocky is able to move a bit and explore.

I feels really good to have them both now, as I have felt like a piece of the story was left out, and we constantly talked about "the one that got away." I'm so glad to share the good news with all my friends here. :D

Oh my goodness I feel tired after just thinking about your schedule and spreadsheet! In all honesty though I really need to work out a better calendar and schedule for Kratos and Xerxes.

On the other hand....YAY for Rocky :blob5: :blob5: :blob5: ...I wondered if you would bring him home eventually. Its so hard to get them out of your mind once they creepy in there. I bet he will come around one the poop schedule once you get him used to being clean on the weekends. Its funny how different they all are with their personalities.

So do you guys still have plans to breed? That was the original intent with Chief, Scarlet, and Ginger right?

I wanted to wish you luck with your move & will be anxious to hear about the new house & how everyone has settled in. It's going to be a big job moving all those tanks, but worth it. Talk to you soon!

Hi everyone. :) It has been so busy in our house lately. We have decided to dedicate a room in our house to rescue dragons and that is keeping us hopping for sure. Rocky is doing well and has sweetened up to me finally. His head twitches are almost gone, and he only really gets a twitch or two when he is very active, and that is usually when he is struggling against getting his supplements. Rocky is really and truly a little fighter, not a survivor, but a Mommy fighter.

Here he is in his home showing his black beard:

Today he got to go outside and he sat on me for a while very happy. I like for them to get down on the ground for some exercise, so I put his leash on him and put him down, but it only took about 15 minutes for him to lose his cool and go on a rampage. He did about 2 straight minutes of temper tantrum and by the time I got his leash off he was overextended and exhausted. I took him inside and this is what he looked like:

The little guy isn't quite conditioned yet and he has no real endurance. He can finally walk/run a straight line without flipping himself over, but he is still stiff on his right side. It's just good to see him able to move. :D

We got a pet store surrender on Friday night and we have named him Felix. He is an adult dragon and I have two different stories about him, and it makes it that much harder to take care of him without a straight story. I was told (1) they never fed him and (2) he had rapid weight loss. So we are not really sure which it is. I've been counseling the pet store employee on feeding him, and he has maybe gained 20 grams, if that. They persisted on feeding him pinkies and I just don't feel that is the way to go for him, so I picked him up 2 nights ago.

Here is Felix before his bath:

And here he is after his bath, from above. I've never quite seen a more sunken in head or shoulder blades that stuck out this far:

I'd love to see Felix recover and find a forever home. :D He has a very long way to go, I know. Already he was looking at me today with a hopeful expression and he seems more comfortable.

That's all the news from the rescue area of the house. Everyone is eating and pooping and enjoying the heat.

Felix is so handsome. So much potential.

I think so, too. He is a very calm dragon, but I don't think he feels well so that may just be it. He may be a holy terror when he recovers! LOL

You have your hands full. I couldn't take on all the beardies/rescues that you do. Don't let yourself get too many so you overdo yourself.

Rocky (I hope I remember his name right), Papa Smurfs 'brother' seems to be doing a little better. Does he not like outside? did he get afraid? It must have been funny to watch.

Your new rescue seems to want someone to love him. Taking in guys like him would make it hard to give them up when they are healthy enough. I believe (I guess I could be wrong, tho) that he won't do as well if he doesn't feel someone loves him. You are the person to love him.
Make sure you let him know that you will love him forever, even if you don't keep him forever.
The hopeful expression you mentioned tells me that's what he wants.

Welcome Felix, he couldn't be in a better "get better" home. Glad to see that Rocky is improving, too. I know it takes time for big improvements but for these little guys it's a step at a time. How's Papa Smurf doing? I'm glad to hear the rest of your crew are all doing well, bet the babies are growing like weeds!

Rocky doesn't like the leash, I hate to say it. He loves to be outside and he will sit calmly in my lap or on my shirt and doesn't show any signs of fear. He has started to really crave one on one attention and enjoys spending time with us. We let him sit on us outside without the leash, but to walk on the ground he has to have a leash on. He hates it. He puffs his beard and body like a big balloon and limps around bucking like a horse. It really is a rampage, and he just can't handle that much stress and exercise yet. He really gets wiped out. He is an emotional dragon and has been really hard to take care of the way I want to. There are days that no matter how much coaxing I do he just won't open his mouth for liquid calcium. I am very thankful that he is improving so I don't have to give him any slurrys. He eats his feeders and loves salad. He will get a black beard if I don't feed him first. :D

I know what you mean about the new rescue, Felix. He was really looking at me today and responding to my voice. Yesterday he barely lifted his head. Today he bit my finger hard when I tried to hand feed him.  It's amazing how much better they feel when they get some good soaks, drink some water and rest in a home that is a comfortable temperature. :D His poop is full of two different kinds of visible worms. :( Once he makes a decent poop he will get a fecal done. We are hoping that happens tomorrow. I love him already. I put a CraigsList ad for my area looking for people to foster rescues and I had three people respond. I am going to meet with them and see if I can mentor anyone to help me out. :D

It takes FOREVER for them to get better. That is so darned true!! It is hard to be patient, but then again time really does fly and before you know it weight has been gained, and color is starting to show and they are more active and happy. I love to see them get better. Papa Smurf is amazing. He loves to be outside, loves his leash, loves to sleep in my lap, and makes me laugh almost every day. Don't underestimate the PAPA. He was standing on his hind legs recently when I got home...trying to get out through the crack in his screen lid where the UVB cord comes out. He had a fly in his home and he wasn't having any of it. He hates flies...

Take care!

Glad to hear that Papa is doing so well, too. Good luck with the foster people, hopefully you can find people who love dragons and are willing to take on the work of taking care of a rescue. That would be awesome! You'll have to let me know how it goes.

Thanks! I don't even need anyone who can take care of a rescue, that is what I can do. I need someone to take them when they are healthy and waiting to be adopted! I just need some foster parents. :D I have another surrender who is probably healthy but just needs to gain a little bit and get a fecal, and to take that one I need someone to take one that I have already rehabbed who is doing great and is very healthy. I just need a good support network here where I live. :D I know with a team in my area we could really make a difference here. :blob8:

Sounds great. Good luck with the people who have answered your ad. It's wonderful to rehab a rescue dragon, especially if they're in bad shape, it just makes you feel so good when they're healthy again.

It is worth every hour we spend, every dollar, every special order to bd.co...to see them get better. The hard part is the quarantine that has to happen between the rescues and our own dragons, and also from rescue to rescue. This new guy, Felix - if he has rapid weight loss it could be a disease. I don't want that passed onto my other dragons, not even my little rescues, not anyone! I personally think it is severe parasite infestation. I see two different worms that he is pooping, and a bunch of mucus. It isn't even a good enough poop to do a fecal on, and I want to treat him but I need to see what he has first. I have pretty much every dewormer we would need on hand. I'm just waiting for a good poop. I fed him a TON of salad this morning and 6 medium silkworms to try and get poop that doesn't have insect parts in it, because he isn't really digesting anything well. We have to be careful not to give him too much protein because he is in such bad shape I just don't know how his renal system is. Silkworms are about 60% protein, but 6 is okay and it should help him give us a good poop. :D Funny that we should be so excited about a good poop, huh???

Yes I know the feeling. When I got Gabriel he had a huge load of parasites, it too, 3 mo to get him clear. My vet didn't want to give him too much at the beginning, he was really skinny and dehydrated, so she decided to give him 1/2 a dose for 1 1/2 mo to give him time to gain weight & hydrate, then for a month he got a regular dose, then 2 more weeks, by Aug 3 he was totally clear. Boy it seemed to take forever! But it was all worth it. Poor Felix, hopefully what you gave him will form a good poop and he can then start the meds to get him better. I'm so glad you took him in!

Yep, we dance for poop, us dragon owners! :blob5: :blob8: :blob5:

LOL @ the poop dances. :p I am afraid if we don't treat this soon he will die. I just took our half-used bottle of Acidolphiliz and marked it for Felix only. We will open a new bottle for everyone else. I gave him 1/2 of the dropper full today straight out of the bottle. He drank it happily. He looks at me with such a hopeful expression. I hate that we never know how old these rescues are, I'd just love to know. They get surrendered and no one even asks their names. It's like they are a 'nobody' until we take them in, give them a name, wash their poop off of them and love them. Then all of a sudden they have hope, and their eyes brighten and they make eye contact with us. You can just see their world change for them.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
