Can someone explain to me the big fear of spiders? :?
I live with three tarantulas- one is mine, who I've had for four years, and the other two are my boyfriend's.
Way back when I first got Boris, I was afraid of her fangs; when she gave me a bite, I was more afraid, lol. But I'm pretty much over it. I understand that it was my little sister's fault for making a big jumping, shrieking show- poor Boris just did not want to deal.

But anyway, people are always like "EWWW SPIDERS!" and "omg a spider kill it!!!"

I'm just curious as to what the scary part is on them. I'm sure it varies, person to person, but any insight would be appreciated. :)

Boxers,

I would be happy too. One my mother was afraid of them. Afraid to be bit by them to look at them and my father was afraid of snakes so you can tell how little HE effected me. However I have had what I would call singularly bad luck when dealing with Spiders. Run into a web as a child. Web was bigger than me (garden spiders) the resounding OMG where is it. Then at the tender age of 11 I was pulling wood in the fall for the Franklin stove and found the biggest wolf spider I have EVER seen. It was the year of the huge spiders as we found 9 of them the size of your tarantula. This one decided I got too close. Mind you I was watching an weaver wrap prey when I looked up and saw IT looking at me. I backed away really fast as it was about 12 inches from my eyes and it leaped at me.

Couple that with my father NOT believing me when I said HUGE spider in the wood pit in MA in the fall and then his OMFing God response when I pointed it out to him and we have...events that last a lifetime.

He figured big was the size pof a half dollar as it would be for my Mom...it wasn't. It was fully the thickness of a brick when it stood up and moved and...cracked when he killed it with the split awl axe we used for the wood.

BIG black spider. In MA...not in the Topics or the desert IN MA.

They show up in places they shouldn't, like on my hand from the tree above as I hand gesture directions at a Renn Fair. They show up in the corner of my room when I am getting the sheets changed. They show up in my garden...as long as they are moving AWAY from my hands I leave them be. They invade my house...they die. I have even held OUTSIDE conversations with them to calm MY nerves. Ok, you go your way I'll go mine and we live in peace.

I kid you not.

Just horrid, horrid luck.

Hm :|
When I was small (4? 5?), I remember a jumping spider leapt onto my head. I find that they still make me feel a little wary, but that's about as deep as it goes, haha.
My uncle and I used to hunt around in creeks for frogs and snakes and things. Once we dug a hole in our sandbox and honestly thought a raccoon would fall in, and that we could then keep it. Those were the days...

Anyway, my point in mentioning the creek hunts, was I guess to point out that I had to deal with spiders a lot when young, and I suppose desensitized myself to them. However, at eleven or twelve, I had begun to notice that it was common for people to be afraid of spiders, so I denounced that I was scared too. Ran from them when the year before I was "rescuing" them from being trampled in the classrooms.
Said uncle and I were lying in the grass one Sunday afternoon when I was fourteen and he was thirteen, and, noticing the spiders crawling about, discussed how interesting it would be if we could locate one "THIS big". (The size became increasingly larger as we went on.)
When it was time for me to return home, a quick run to the store turned out to be my grampa and uncle buying me a surprise gift: a tarantula. It was just so funny and so ironic.

But keeping her made me realize that I was not afraid of spiders, never really had been afraid.
I can say truthfully though that tiny ones in the house make me nervous, simply because they are hard to keep an eye on and I hate to think that they will end up crawling over my face or lurking in my bed.
The big ones, like tarantulas, are much better. I tell friends to think of them as weird-legged hamsters- "they're so fuzzy and cute, riiight?"
It doesn't really work, but many an "arachnophobic" friend/classmate has held or at least petted my Boris.
Lovely ambassador for the spider world. :)

Very pretty color this Boris you speak of... :) . Looking in pictures doesn't bother me unless they are showing face fang and or that aggressive waving at you posture. VERY pretty color. 8)

Yay for pet pics! :blob5: Sorry this is picture heavy... I love showing off the critters! Oddly enough I rotated all the pictures but they aren't rotated on here... or maybe they are. :)

Here are the animals of my 'zoo'... in order of acquiring...

This is Bella my leopard gecko. She was from a store where someone dropped her off and abandoned her. So I took her home! I've had her for about 6 years or so, unsure of her age tho'.

This is Zoey my lovebird. I raised her from 10 days old about 5 years ago. (hatch date Oct 10/03)

In her favorite place... in my pocket or sleeve!

This is my fish tank that I've had for many years. It is a 10 gallon with some platys, cardinals, glow lights, sparkling gouramis, head and tail lights)

This is Chico my budgie. She was teal and yellow and is now green and yellow. She is about 3 years old now. She was a gift from a pet store that I worked at for a while.

And Chico now... (also female now when we thought she was a male...)

And of course Squishy... then and now...

This is my pooch Speedy. She was from an AHT (Animal Health Technology) program in BC. She was originally a pound puppy that was a stray. She is about 2 and a half and sweet as can be. She looks like an Ibizan Hound cross with a yellow lab.
Just before I adopted her..

Now. After she hurt her foot and cuddling with my boyfriend and chilling in her kennel getting ready for a nap!

(She likes to shred her blankets as you can tell...)

And the latest addition is Spartacus. His mom was brought to an emergency clinic to be euthanized when she went into labour because she had been HBC the previous night and they didn't want to pay the bills. She had 3 kittens by caesarean section and he wasn't able to find a home because he has some brain damage so my friend brought him to me and I kept him. He is about 6 months old now.
This is when he was about 2 weeks old...

 Thanks! Yeah, we take him to the park all of the time in the summer. He loves it. Everyone is always asking us what kind of dog he is. Ha, ha, they are quite surprised to find out when they get a bit closer that he is a bunny. He's super cool, we love him.

THOR'S MOM: Yeah, me and my mom can never say no to an animal haha. 2 of the 3 dogs are rescues, both cats, and one of my beardies and one of my snakes. haha. It's ridiculous. I now also have a saltwater tank. Which I will get picture tomorrow. I just started it so there is nothing but crabs and snails in it right now! All your pets are beautiful! But I LOVE your horse and your bunny is adorable.

BOXERS: Not a big fan of spiders because of past camping trips when i was child and i would wake up with what I now think were wolf spiders on me. Also went to a port o potty once and a spider was on the backside of the door the size of my fist. ALSO a coworker of mine was bit on the thigh on her front porch by a brown recluse, and still has problems and it's been about 2 years. Tarantulas dont bother me so bad, just wild spiders. But I've had one at the pet store i work at jump on my shirt and rear up on her back legs cause she got scared....so it was enough to startle me. I leave the spiders alone that are outside of my house. I have wuite a few black widows out in the garden but have NEVER seen them inside the house, so I dont mind them :)

Once,I got bit by a spider and my leg swelled up in that spot and the skin ripped :puke:

Then, at camp, I got bit by another one three times and :puke: everywhere and got a nasty headache. I still luv spiders though, lol.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
