Calico update!
She was patiently waiting on the deck again this morning, so of course, I quickly scooped out whatever was left of the wet food into the gray bowl and went outside.
As always, as soon as she hears the backdoor open, she bolts off the deck and down the steps. Unlike her normal, today she was sitting on the ground at the bottom of the steps, almost as if she knew it'd only be me and was waiting for her breakfast. As soon as she saw me standing at the top, she began to meow. I squatted down and showed her the bowl of food, and she meowed louder. Then, to my surprise, she got up and started to walk away. I called her back and asked her if she wanted to eat; instead of coming back up, she stretched and rubbed herself against the railing post. After a big stretch, she finally decided to turn around and look at me, all the while meowing away. She walked up two steps and sniffed, making sure that I was giving her the same yummy food as last week. I almost got her to eat out of the bowl while I was holding onto it, but at the last second, she changed her mind and backed down a step. That was when I put the bowl down but stayed put, testing her trust level. Well, to my surprise, she actually walked all the way up to top step, meowing all the way up, and began to eat, with me squatting 2 feet away from her! She ate and ate until there was only slivers left, then she walked down the steps and underneath the deck. I followed her down and almost got her to come out to finish her food, but she changed her mind at the last second and walked towards the woods. I followed 5 feet behind her (not secretly) and scooped up the remaining food onto my left index finger. When I caught up to her (she had stopped at the edge of the yard), I reached out my left hand and told her to lick the food off of my finger. She first sniffed it, thought about it for a second, then walked away. I again followed her and after a few feet of walking, she stopped and looked back at me. I reached out my hand again and told her to finish it, and that's when the shock of the century happened -- She walked up to my hand, sniffed my finger, rubbed her head against my hand, and licked my finger until nearly all of the food was gone!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the calico cat rubber her head on my hand AND licked my finger!
I was all warm and giddy inside, but knew that I couldn't react on the outside or she'll run away.
After she finished her breakfast, she strolled across the yard towards the house and stood in front of a storage container, listening and surveying it. She even stood up to hear/see better. Turns out, there was something stirring under or inside the tarp that was sitting on top. I wasn't about to unfold it to find out what it was, so I just let it be. Shortly after that, she slowly walked away and into the woods.
