Please say a prayer for my girl.

I rescued Dexter about 6 months ago.
She was a skinny little thing missing half an arm, half a foot, alot of toes and in need of some serious attention. She was feral and I got more than my fair share of bites, but I fought for her love good and hard!
A month later she was the biggest cuddlebug on the planet, demanding snuggles against my neck before bed each night.

Anyway, Id finally got her back to health and then she became gravid and laid two clutches of eggs.
Now she isnt doing well at all, no matter how much I syringe feed her she wont put any weight back on.
The doctor fears she has a liver condition due to her previous husbandry (starving and feasting) and the trauma of laying may have been too much for her.
He says the prognosis isnt good.
The vet did however say that without the care ive provided for her Dex wouldnt have made it, so I have only you guys to thank for all your advice.

Ive been sent home with antibiotics, critical care and Im waiting on the all important blood results.


Dex has been the light of my life for these past few months and Im not ready to let her go.
So I ask, if you're the praying type could you slip Dexter in your beardie prayers tonight?

I am using this with Cam right now, and have used it with my hedgehogs for liver disease. Liver disease can be overcome! Keep syringe feeding her - that's the most important thing right now.

I was reading through your other thread too, all the way from the beginning. I noticed that you wrote this: "using mercury vapor Realsun 100w (awful brand but all they stock in Hull. Im getting a TREX ACTIVE MVB next month when ive been paid)." I wondered if you ended up getting the T-Rex, if not, that may help her improve, certainly worth a try.

I just found this info about the RealSun MVB's, thought you would want to read it.

We started testing UVB lamps back in 2004 and in February, 2005, one of the
first people to contact us and offer us a mercury vapour lamp for testing,
was a young man who was starting to import a very cheap Chinese spot lamp.
The Chinese factory provided the branding and packaging to his
specifications and he chose "Realsun" as his brand name.
He was told by the Chinese company that these lamps were "identical" to the
Active UV Heat lamp made by Westron in Canada.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. We found that these were
very badly made, fragile lamps (he admitted over the phone that a large
proportion were damaged during shipping) Filaments were bending inside the
lamp and the whole arc tube array, on one I received, was shifting about
when you held the base.
They emitted significant amounts of hazardous UVC and such a narrow,
powerful focused beam of UVB that at "basking distances" of 12 inches
(suggested on a paper insert) we recorded extremely dangerous output of over
2,000 uW/cm2 .... (Values of 100 - 200 uW/cm2 are typical of the best
mercury vapour lamps on sale today, and are about the maximum desirable at
the basking spot.)

We wrote a report to the young man who was importing them; he strongly
disputed my findings and told me that he would rather believe the paperwork
from the Chinese factory which claimed a far lower, safe output. He told me
not to publish the report.
However, at about the same time, several major UK reptile product
distributors asked me to test these lamps, to see whether they should stock
them. One sent me another sample lamp.
On the strength of my report on the UVC and very high UVB output, and their
own observations, they removed the lamps from their shelves and the shops
that were members of REPTA (Reptile & Exotic Pet Trade Association) were
advised against selling them.

I never heard from RealSun again.
About a year ago, one of the distributors told me that they had been
approached by him once more, and would I be interested in testing another
batch of lamps - I understood from what he said, that these were something
new - on their behalf. I agreed; but nothing ever came of it and so I
assumed that was the end of the matter.

But the pictures on eBay appear to be exactly the same lamps I tested back
in early 2005.... clear-faced spot lamps in 100, 160 and 250 watt versions.
I suppose they are the remains of his original stock; if I remember
correctly he had bought a large consignment. At the time I felt very sorry
for him, because the Chinese had obviously not been fully truthful and the
lamps were unsaleable.... but it would appear that someone is now selling
them and they were not destroyed, as I had imagined.
I think I will have to publish the original report, after all. People will
be buying these and be unaware of the risk....

I don't have to tell you what I think of them, do I?.....

Are you after a high quality mercury vapour lamp yourself?
The two narrow flood mercury vapour lamps which had excellent test results
are the latest offerings from Westron of Canada; the T-Rex Active UV Heat
Flood and the ReptileUV.com MegaRay.
These are actually the same lamp, sold in different packaging. The ReptileUV
lamp is usually cheaper because it is sold by the designer's own small
company, in plain brown boxes. The TRex lamps usually retail for about £65.
You can have the ReptileUV lamp sent direct from the USA from
http://www.reptileUV.com for $80 but in theory you could be asked for 17.5% import
duty from the postman on delivery (though a lot of people seem to get the
parcel with no bill..)
