Hello,

The Reptiglo 10 compact or coil light as well as other brands of compact & coils are not good sources of UVB emissions. The compact or coil lights are terrible sources for UVB, & UVA as well which makes it very hard on their eyes. Also, since you are using an Infrared light for basking that is not a bright enough. These lights are particularly glaring & have been made with the incorrect phosphor blend which allows low wavelength UVB which is hazardous to their health.
You will need to get a Reptisun 10 flourescent tube bulb & a bright white halogen flood light for the basking. I think if you make those changes your dragon will start doing much better for you.

Well, now you got advice from 3 people!! :laughhard:

How about a 5th? Please turn that coil bulb off immediately. He will be much better off without any UVB for a few days and even for a week rather than using that dangerous one. Since you haven't been using a white basking bulb and using the ceramic heat emitter instead for his heat, more dangerous is being done because there is no white bulb to help counteract the glare, etc that the coil bulbs produce.

What size tank is he in and what wattage is the ceramic heat emitter that you have been using? Were you able to find a digital thermometer that has a long wire & probe end? Since you have been using stick-on thermometers, you have not been getting accurate readings and they could be off by as much as 20 degrees, so he may have been over heated and even though you have been bathing him, the temps could be causing dehydration very quickly. Also, using calcium or vitamins every day or even every other day is too often when you don't have a good UVB light. You need to act fast, get the Repti-Sun 10.0 strip fluorescent bulb and a hood, a digital thermometer with a probe end, get some babyfood into him and bathe him very often while massaging his right side to help with a possible impaction. Do you have any questions?

To answer your question, yes the bearded dragon needs a UVB light just NOT the one you currently have. Do I count as the 6th person Tracie and diamc?
I bet if you turn off his lights and get the repti sun 10.0 flourescent tube you will see a difference. Hope your little guy is doing OK

Ah, I love all the "back up" around here. And truly, this is the VERY thing that convinced me about our compact light; the consensus of advice/information given here. I simply could NOT ignore the sheer number of posts dealing with this very problem. Our dear beardie thanks you all...

ShyGurl0189, how is your dragon doing?

Well thats part of the problem with these bulbs they are unpredictable at best. One bulb will just give off crappy UVB but not injure him in an outward manner but after prolonged use the health will decline from the overall poor health and in many cases its very hard to see until its too late and they are suffering from MBD,poor eyesite, declined growth rate and eating habits, etc while another bulb will actually cause immediate damage sometimes even while using the same brand of bulb.Basically what I am saying is it has effected him its just something that may not have been totally visible to you at the time.Generaly even when the bulb doesnt cause obvious damage you can see at least a stunted growth rate. For example your a person using a coil could have a one year old beardie thats only 12-13 inches long while that same beardie under proper uvb would have been 18-20 inches by then.In your case the symptoms now are fairly obvious and exhaserbated by the lack of a bright white basking bulb as well as the temps being off.Ten degrees alone can make a big differance in the beavior of a Beardie and with the season changing its quite likely it wasnt the same temp before and the CE is either too hot or cold because of that.

I feel like such a jack*** and a bad mommy! :( so i went to petsmart today to get the UVB light and return the one i bought yesterday! its not the 10.0 they were al out of the size fixture. so there i just got a basking light and i bigger dome. then ran to petco (EEEWWWWWWW) and they were out of the proper fixtures too. so I got the reptisun 5.0. the temp is ten times better, too. 10 mins after i get everything set up he started walking around his cage and HE ATE on his OWN!!! :D i was crying i was sooooo happy!!! now i am watching him as i am typing and he is under the basking light and he is puffing out and he is standing tall on his front legs puffing his body, (is that normal?) JW im still going to keep a close eye on him for the next couple of days tho. just to make sure. ill let you all know!

THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH for everyones help. i would have ever figured it out with out every one!! :D :blob5: :love5: :notworthy:

That's great news. :blob8: :blob5: We knew that you'd notice a difference after making some changes. The Repti-Sun 5.0 fluorescent is a good bulb but when it needs changing in 5 to 6 months, you could have a Repti-Sun 10.0 on hand that you could order ahead of time. Make sure the 5.0 is 6 to 8" from him when he is basking. What are the basking & cool side temps now? He really sounds like he is doing much better, standing tall is a good sign. :p

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
