Pinky mice

My bearded dragon, Edgar, is 4 years old and small for his breed. I was wondering if it would be ok to feed him pinky mice. And, no, he's not a dwarf. He is a sandfire.

pinky mice are usually far too big for beardies, the bones are hard to digest not to mention the very high fat content. its not reccommended that you feed pinkies to a beardie because the bones and size of the pinkie may cause impaction and the high fat content may lead to fatty liver disease.

I wouldnt give hime that many! And sorry fo not using ' because the keys are sticking and make a million of them. But hes 16 inches, so maybe one a month or two.

I still would not feed them at all. There are much better feeders out there!

What happens everytime you feed any insectovor mammal protien they cannot digest it properly. Their liver then has to kick into mega overdrive just to process what it can and then ussually stores the rest in the liver never to be reutilized, hence leading to fatty liver disease.

Yes their liver will work over time to process the excess protein. The "quantity of "excess" is undefined though. Depending on the specified quantity of "excess" it may or may not have an adverese effect. I would not feed a pinky to a BD though for extra protein as stated there's not much protein on a pinky and its mostly fat. Staples like silkworms or roaches would be better over time or if you could get your hands on appropriately sized locust even better for a short term protein boost.
