Papa Smurf - pretty on the inside - full of sweetness

I'd like everyone to meet my new beardie, Papa Smurf. I met Papa Smurf at our local reptile shop last week. He was brought in by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk, severely malnourished and destined for the freezer. They said they felt sorry for him and hoped he could be helped. He's has a severe case of MBD with jaw, limb and tail deformities. I was drawn to him and I wanted to take him so badly, but we already have our hands full and after the Holidays we were pretty broke.

But then PetCo had a $1/gallon sale and we got two 40-gallon breeders...and there was no excuse for not taking him. The shop owner said he would lend me an entire set-up if we took him saying he knew we would give him a good home, and even though we didn't take him up on the tank and lights loan, I just couldn't leave him there.

May I present the glorious Papa Smurf:

This was him the night I got him, December 28th. It took hours to set up the viv for him and the other new beardie we got that same day (yes we are insane LOL) so he got out of his pet carrier around 11:30pm. He looked so sad:

We gave him a midnight soak and he needed full support in the shallow tub water to keep him from drowning. I was worried I bit off more than I could handle with this sick boy, but after his bath he looked a little bit better. We noticed the blue sand in his eye and used a q-tip soaked in distilled water to gently remove it. Why do people house these poor guys on sand?!? His mouth had sand it in, it was caked on his vent, and his little arms and legs are stained blue. Now you see where he got the name Papa Smurf! He is little, grey-bearded and blue.

I hope this leg can straighten out. He has a really hard time walking because of it. I had some advice on here about vet wrap to protect his scales and I did buy some so we'll hopefully get him rehabilitated to be able to use this leg. I am kinda worried it may be broken or a prior break that healed wrong.

Here he is on December 30th, basking on his little low ladder in his jamming viv. He can't handle furniture right now because he is very crippled and can't really climb or get around, but he doesn't seem to mind. After mounting the UV inside the viv and raising the floor so he can be within about 6 inches, he really perked up. That UV is so important!

Here he is in his little bathtub with 1/2 Pedialyte and 1/2 water. Again he will drown if his head and neck aren't held above the water. He was drinking and drinking and all that thick saliva was running out into the water. After his bath he was swallowing and moving his neck as if we cleared out so much mucous. He looked much more comfortable.

And of course, after the bath we get a snuggle in the towel. He just lays wherever we put him and behaves so sweetly.

And here is how he slept. I was told here in my Beardie ER thread that he needed a night temp of at least 85 degrees since he is sick and it would help his immune system, and it really did make an improvement to the way he woke up the next day. He was much less stiff the next morning and ate breakfast right after waking up.

My husband, Otto, told me Papa Smurf may not survive and you just never know with a sick beardie. He is trying to make sure I have a realistic understanding of Papa Smurf's disease because he knows what a softie I am. I've cried over this little guy so much already. His poo is terrible and we know he has parasites. The medication to treat that is pretty harsh so he is worried the treatment may be too much for him. I've been giving him AcidolphiLiz daily hoping to boost that good gut flora in preparation for future veterinary intervention.

Papa Smurf is a sweet lover of a bearded dragon. He is tough and a fighter but gives the sweetest looks. He truly appreciates us and he knows we are trying to help him. He 100% allows us to do whatever we try to do with him and is a total doll. :love5:

Uh-oh I think I have fallen in love.....

You're all right, Papa is not impressed that his brother has moved in! Are you going to get a video of them try to outbeard each other Shannon? At least you know that Rocky can give as good as he gets!

They have tanks that are next to each other, but I block off the end so they can't see each other all the time. Rocky is in bad shape as far as muscular control and coordination, and the videos of him would be rough for people to see, but then again it is a good testament to how horrible a disease MBD is. :? So maybe I will post one here for people to see.

Papa hates Rocky and loses his temper so badly that he will scare you if you are not expecting it.

Here is Papa in his new 30 gallon breeder. I think for handicapped or MBD dragons the 30 gallon is better than the 40 gallon because the sides are shorter and it is easier to let them bask directly on the floor and reach the UVB and not have a really high wattage basking bulb. Papa will never have any branches or tall basking spots because he really can't climb...but here is my little boy, all grown up in his new home. HE LOVES HIS NEW HOME. I can see it on his face. I almost cried when I first put him in there because he looked up at me like IS THIS MINE, MOM???? :blob8: OMG the heart melts, let me tell you.

This is Rocky in Papa's old home with his new ReptiSUN mounted on those brackets I got from beardeddragon.co. I like the 20 long for a hospital tank because there isn't really a cold side so the temps stay up and they are basically forced to bask. They need that.

I love that. Is this mine? All of it??

That is exactly what his face said. He got way too mobile for the old 20 long, that is for sure. We keep catching him under his fleece-ladder-hide area sleeping (he loves to sleeeeep) so I may have to make some changes, just not sure what. He's used to having that ladder to lean on in the 20 long and he would get his UV and heat on it, too, because the tank was so narrow. Now there is so much room....well, I will work it all out for him. He almost totally abandoned that basking rock, which is kinda weird. I want to make Papa a hide that he can just put his head under, but his body will stay out. I guess that's tricking him into hiding his head and still letting his body get UVB. Such a tricky Mama I am....

One has to think sneaky to get them to do what they need to do. To get them to eat the greens they don't really want to eat one must play the beat the closing mouth game. So to get Papa Smurf to bask and still sleep, you must trick him into thinking he's hiding while in reality his body is basking.

HAHA yes that is what I have in mind! A corner head-hide....but have his body out for the UVB. :blob5:

What's their substrate???

Non -adhesive shelf liner in a sand color. I cut it with a ruler and razorblade inside their viv so it fits well, and to clean it I remove it and soak it in the bathtub in warm, soapy water and dry it off. It's a snap to clean and it gets squeaky clean, too. I wash all of mine every week, except for Rocky - I wash his daily because he is infested with parasites right now, poor guy. You can wipe it down with disinfectant, like the Quaternary Disinfectant from bd.co, and it keeps coccidia numbers down by keeping their environment really sanitary. (Can you tell I love it?? I even use it for my leopard gecko and it works with the UTH).

Hi Shannon,
How lucky can one dragon family be, to both get you for their rescuer/mom. That's a great photo of Rocky. He's such a cutie! :love5: I think it's wonderful you got Papa Smurf's brother and so sad they both have MBD. I can't wait to see Rocky improve with your great care! I agree that watching them struggle to move around is heart wrenchingly tragic to see but you are also right about the video being a testament about how horrible MBD is.
Shannon you are amazing and you could have blown me over with a feather when I read how big your reptile family is....WOW :notworthy:

Huh. I have reptile carpet right now, and I like it, but I have to put it through the wash on the "sanitary" cycle with an extra rinse to get it completely clean. Sometimes it smells like laundry detergent afterwards, and I have to rinse it again. (Then in the dryer, it pills. :| )
The NASL miht be an interesting option. I will at least keep it in mind:)

I just love Papa's new home, he certainly has alot more space to move around, especially if Chief visits again  . And Rocky probably thinks he's in dragon heaven at this point, a really clean space, a great UVB light that he's under no matter where he is, I know he'll improve really quickly. I'm just glad that he came home to you guys! :D :D

Awwww I am overly flattered. Rocky is a cutie and I want him to get better so badly. I don't want to see him in any pain. It hurts me to see how he walks with stiffness and pain, and the head twitches that he has are very concerning to me. :? I only see one side of his body rise and fall when he breaths, and all the other beardies have both sides moving, so now I think part of his endurance problem may be that a lung isn't working. I PM'd Deb because of her problems with Lonzo, to see what info she can give me. You know, we pick each other's brains.

And DANG IT I called Rocky "Alex" again! I'm so annoyed and then I guess I have to laugh. I can't keep all these poor creatures straight. How is Alex? He must be on my mind hard if I keep doing this...

I used to have the Repticarpet also, but it doesn't get clean enough for me...! I have some poopy-finger-painters and it was just too much for me. I like that the shelf liner wipes clean. Also I don't have my own washer-dryer yet, so washing the carpet was costing me $. AND yes it does pill up! I've had to shave it before. LOL that just cracked me up!

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
