Papa Smurf - pretty on the inside - full of sweetness

I'd like everyone to meet my new beardie, Papa Smurf. I met Papa Smurf at our local reptile shop last week. He was brought in by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk, severely malnourished and destined for the freezer. They said they felt sorry for him and hoped he could be helped. He's has a severe case of MBD with jaw, limb and tail deformities. I was drawn to him and I wanted to take him so badly, but we already have our hands full and after the Holidays we were pretty broke.

But then PetCo had a $1/gallon sale and we got two 40-gallon breeders...and there was no excuse for not taking him. The shop owner said he would lend me an entire set-up if we took him saying he knew we would give him a good home, and even though we didn't take him up on the tank and lights loan, I just couldn't leave him there.

May I present the glorious Papa Smurf:

This was him the night I got him, December 28th. It took hours to set up the viv for him and the other new beardie we got that same day (yes we are insane LOL) so he got out of his pet carrier around 11:30pm. He looked so sad:

We gave him a midnight soak and he needed full support in the shallow tub water to keep him from drowning. I was worried I bit off more than I could handle with this sick boy, but after his bath he looked a little bit better. We noticed the blue sand in his eye and used a q-tip soaked in distilled water to gently remove it. Why do people house these poor guys on sand?!? His mouth had sand it in, it was caked on his vent, and his little arms and legs are stained blue. Now you see where he got the name Papa Smurf! He is little, grey-bearded and blue.

I hope this leg can straighten out. He has a really hard time walking because of it. I had some advice on here about vet wrap to protect his scales and I did buy some so we'll hopefully get him rehabilitated to be able to use this leg. I am kinda worried it may be broken or a prior break that healed wrong.

Here he is on December 30th, basking on his little low ladder in his jamming viv. He can't handle furniture right now because he is very crippled and can't really climb or get around, but he doesn't seem to mind. After mounting the UV inside the viv and raising the floor so he can be within about 6 inches, he really perked up. That UV is so important!

Here he is in his little bathtub with 1/2 Pedialyte and 1/2 water. Again he will drown if his head and neck aren't held above the water. He was drinking and drinking and all that thick saliva was running out into the water. After his bath he was swallowing and moving his neck as if we cleared out so much mucous. He looked much more comfortable.

And of course, after the bath we get a snuggle in the towel. He just lays wherever we put him and behaves so sweetly.

And here is how he slept. I was told here in my Beardie ER thread that he needed a night temp of at least 85 degrees since he is sick and it would help his immune system, and it really did make an improvement to the way he woke up the next day. He was much less stiff the next morning and ate breakfast right after waking up.

My husband, Otto, told me Papa Smurf may not survive and you just never know with a sick beardie. He is trying to make sure I have a realistic understanding of Papa Smurf's disease because he knows what a softie I am. I've cried over this little guy so much already. His poo is terrible and we know he has parasites. The medication to treat that is pretty harsh so he is worried the treatment may be too much for him. I've been giving him AcidolphiLiz daily hoping to boost that good gut flora in preparation for future veterinary intervention.

Papa Smurf is a sweet lover of a bearded dragon. He is tough and a fighter but gives the sweetest looks. He truly appreciates us and he knows we are trying to help him. He 100% allows us to do whatever we try to do with him and is a total doll. :love5:

Uh-oh I think I have fallen in love.....

:notworthy: That coming from you... ...my goodness. YOU are the amazing rescuer. What you have been through with Talon and Moya was almost insurmountable. You conquered URIs and YF...who does that and then post pics of gorgeous, brightly colored beardies??? Who on earth ever gets their rescue to look so colorful...? Only Amanda.

Here's a list of our scaly children:
Bearded dragons:
Chief
Maya
Ginger
Scarlet
Papa Smurf
Beauty
Brutis
Spring
Myron
Mecca
Lemon Drop
Coming soon - Rocky (Papa Smurf's bro)

Rankins Dragons
Gobi
Sahara
Kalahari
Sonora

Blue tongue skink - Bazinga (Buzzy)

Leopard Gecko - Bella

Savannah monitor - Jambo

Anoles
Sativa
Jade (out on loan - breeding program)
Fajitas (loaner to replace Jade - kinda like collateral LOL)

That's a lot, right...? LOL! I got home at 4:30pm and it's 6:52pm and I have Ginger in the bath and I still have to clean Scarlet's viv, bathe the Rankins and clean their viv, and clean Maya's viv. I've already bathed Spring and Myron and cleaned their vivs, and bathed Maya. When I clean vivs, I take everything out even their furniture and bowls and clean them in the tub, including their non-adhesive shelf liner substrate. And I disinfect the tub between each dragon and their viv cleaning stuff. Oh and I haven't even looked at the silkworms yet. I have about 6,000 of them between the sizes of extra small and hatchling. This is my life every single day...

To make matters even more interesting, this was my 4th day working 10 hour days with no break, not even to leave for lunch. I'm kinda tired.... ....but it feels good to take care of my little lerps.
WE ARE ALL UNWORTHY!!! Everone, quick, bow to the beardie slave masters!!!!

Good god, Shanny – I knew you had Papa and Chief and the Rankins and the SM, but Ididn't realize just how many reptiles you really have! And you work full-time! That's pretty damn amazing!

Love the video, btw - I literally LOL'd when Chief popped his head up behind Papa! :laughhard:

I'm telling you, Chief is very smart. He is hands down the genius in the house, Otto is second and I'm just...well, the sweetie of the house. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you smarter than your bearded dragon? LOL no. Reminds me of the bumper stickers that Cheryl at Rio Reptiles has that says, "My bearded dragon is smarter than your honor student." HAHAHAHA

We have a lot of herps for sure. They are all our loves and we spend time with all of them and give cuddles, so it's not like we have a pile and they are just in glass cages. They all come out and get love.

   Yeah we have learned so much about dragons and husbandry from our rescues. I'm by no means an expert yet, but most of what I have learned has been on here from people like you, and also from some breeders, and Cheryl at Rio Reptiles, and a few other people, too. That's why I keep coming back on here and trying to help other people. Because I know when you have problems with your lizards, it's so easy for everyone to say to take it to the vet or change the UVB, but for God's sake, the UVB isn't always the first thing to replace, and even vets that specialize in reptiles don't always know what to do for our beardeds. I'm not saying don't take it to the vet, LOL!!!, but I am saying it's nice to have this forum so when the vet gives meds, we can approve the dose, or add the info about heat at night, or the liquid vitamins and supplements that we know work, that the vets don't know about.

Papa Smurf is a nothing, in a way...he's just a grey lizard...but to me, he is the most important member of my household because if it weren't for him, I wouldn't have the understanding that I have about these creatures.

And I owe everything I know to people here, people online I have never met before, a breeder that we'd never met, and my husband, who is a relentless researcher like myself. :D

I for one think your doing an amazing job. I don't know how you do it, it doesn't seem like there are enough hours in the day. But you do and your good at it. I think being a member of this forum has helped me tremendously with the care of my beardies. Your experience with Papa alone has given you great knowledge in the care of a sick beardie and now you can give other people with less experience great advice that works. IMO that is what being a member here is all about, giving advice on things you know about and taking advice on things your not too sure of. Yay for BD.org!!!! :blob5: :blob5: :blob5:

WOW Shannon, I didn't realize you had so many different types of reptiles, thought you mainly had beardies, Rankins & your skink. I can't imagine working full time & still doing all those daily chores to keep your critters happy & healthy. Thank goodness you're breeding silkworms & you said you're breeding supers, too? Good thing, you sure have alot of babies to feed!

I can only imagine how glad you'll be to move out of that small apartment to a good sized house, that will be a joyous day!
Take care
Deb

Looking at Rocky's thread, I came up with a "UVB-hide" idea! It could be a rock with a hole in the middle and a little nook for him to bury his head into, like this-
775075b5.jpg

f64e67a3.jpg

Fake rock with very few crannies, but realistic- check out PumkinJelly's stairs for Fiz.
It could be reinforced with a little wood- maybe popsicle sticks.
Has a nook at one end for him to jam his head into, maybe line that with a little felt or fleece, maybe not.
Papa sleeps and gets UVB. Win-win!
:)

SpitFyre, you are awesome! That's a great plan you have drawn out. I remember PumpkinJelly was trying to do the fake rock...was she successful? I need to go over and see what she has been up to. :D I looked at the Lizard Landscapes method of doing the fake rocks and tank decorations and I can't wait to give it a try. I do thing Papa just needs a place to hide his head, because when his head his hidden, he thinks he is totally hidden. LOL. I can't wait to get him into his 30g breeder today...I want to see what he does with all that space. I'm gonna be so mad if I put him in there and he goes to sleep. :angry5:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
