Papa Smurf - pretty on the inside - full of sweetness

I'd like everyone to meet my new beardie, Papa Smurf. I met Papa Smurf at our local reptile shop last week. He was brought in by two pre-teen girls in a cookie tin, unable to walk, severely malnourished and destined for the freezer. They said they felt sorry for him and hoped he could be helped. He's has a severe case of MBD with jaw, limb and tail deformities. I was drawn to him and I wanted to take him so badly, but we already have our hands full and after the Holidays we were pretty broke.

But then PetCo had a $1/gallon sale and we got two 40-gallon breeders...and there was no excuse for not taking him. The shop owner said he would lend me an entire set-up if we took him saying he knew we would give him a good home, and even though we didn't take him up on the tank and lights loan, I just couldn't leave him there.

May I present the glorious Papa Smurf:

This was him the night I got him, December 28th. It took hours to set up the viv for him and the other new beardie we got that same day (yes we are insane LOL) so he got out of his pet carrier around 11:30pm. He looked so sad:

We gave him a midnight soak and he needed full support in the shallow tub water to keep him from drowning. I was worried I bit off more than I could handle with this sick boy, but after his bath he looked a little bit better. We noticed the blue sand in his eye and used a q-tip soaked in distilled water to gently remove it. Why do people house these poor guys on sand?!? His mouth had sand it in, it was caked on his vent, and his little arms and legs are stained blue. Now you see where he got the name Papa Smurf! He is little, grey-bearded and blue.

I hope this leg can straighten out. He has a really hard time walking because of it. I had some advice on here about vet wrap to protect his scales and I did buy some so we'll hopefully get him rehabilitated to be able to use this leg. I am kinda worried it may be broken or a prior break that healed wrong.

Here he is on December 30th, basking on his little low ladder in his jamming viv. He can't handle furniture right now because he is very crippled and can't really climb or get around, but he doesn't seem to mind. After mounting the UV inside the viv and raising the floor so he can be within about 6 inches, he really perked up. That UV is so important!

Here he is in his little bathtub with 1/2 Pedialyte and 1/2 water. Again he will drown if his head and neck aren't held above the water. He was drinking and drinking and all that thick saliva was running out into the water. After his bath he was swallowing and moving his neck as if we cleared out so much mucous. He looked much more comfortable.

And of course, after the bath we get a snuggle in the towel. He just lays wherever we put him and behaves so sweetly.

And here is how he slept. I was told here in my Beardie ER thread that he needed a night temp of at least 85 degrees since he is sick and it would help his immune system, and it really did make an improvement to the way he woke up the next day. He was much less stiff the next morning and ate breakfast right after waking up.

My husband, Otto, told me Papa Smurf may not survive and you just never know with a sick beardie. He is trying to make sure I have a realistic understanding of Papa Smurf's disease because he knows what a softie I am. I've cried over this little guy so much already. His poo is terrible and we know he has parasites. The medication to treat that is pretty harsh so he is worried the treatment may be too much for him. I've been giving him AcidolphiLiz daily hoping to boost that good gut flora in preparation for future veterinary intervention.

Papa Smurf is a sweet lover of a bearded dragon. He is tough and a fighter but gives the sweetest looks. He truly appreciates us and he knows we are trying to help him. He 100% allows us to do whatever we try to do with him and is a total doll. :love5:

Uh-oh I think I have fallen in love.....

I just loved the pic of Papa getting into it with Chief, he really is very fiesty & no issues with the tanks, mine are all like that & they don't eat baby food in their tanks, it's just glass dancing & mom's laziness in cleaning the tanks  So there you go! Papa has sure gotten strong since you got him, even if he hasn't gained weight. You've done an amazing job with him.

Isn't that funny that he doesn't have the same reaction to Buzzy, I've never seen a male dragon ignore another species like that!

Gabriel is still eating alot more than he was, on top of the babyfood today he ate 8 supers, so I'm very pleased with him. He's got a real little belly going on :D

I'm soo glad you got Papa Smurf, he will keep you hopping and, most likely, laughing all day long!

He really does make us laugh a lot with all the expressions he makes and how territorial he is. Males are a lot of fun.

Well, today is tank cleaning day and bath day and I guess you could just call it 'Reptile Day." We have so many tanks to clean! LOL! Ginger just shed so her tank is a lizard skin explosion. It's going to be a fun day. Today is Chief's birthday so we are spending time with him and celebrating.

I hope Papa starts eating his worms again soon. He will eat supers, but we are out and I have tons of silkworms so I am holding out. I don't know why they get so picky, but I'm guessing it's because they aren't starving and in the wild they may go a few days without eating. I'm hoping giving him some male sparring time will make him hungry from the exercise. Time will tell!

I completely believe they're like toddlers about food. If they refuse to eat what they're given then you will give them what they want. When butterworms were in shortage because of the season Odahviing was turning her tail up to crickets and refusing them. I felt awful but turned a firm voice to it and told her that it was fine, she got nothing but salad then. She lasted two days.

I give her crickets with the worms because it gives her a chase insect. She's very lazy. Also, she's getting a little fat. So she's adorable and docile but I want to keep her moving. Crickets do that. She's learning that if she doesn't eat the crickets then She gets them again. Tough noodles.

It's got to be hard on a different level with a beardie like Papa, who started so ill, but he's strong now! So there's that. When a toddler is sick, ice cream for breakfast is a-ok for a hurting throat, but if a toddler is fine he has to eat his veggies. Even if he doesn't like them. And even if Momma feels bad forcing him to.

I saw that Odahviing was gaining weight AKA Ginger. I love them a little plumper, and there is a regular household debate on how healthy a fat dragon is and how sad the beardie diet will be for them if they keep gaining. :p Ginger is a tough one for me to feed because I want her to grow big but not fat. Grrrrr. She is growing fat. LOL

I'm trying for big and getting belly. :p But when she runs she curls her tail up high off the ground and doesn't drag her belly... so there's that.

I was thinking more protein would make them bigger, and have been trying not to feed her fatty foods, but she still gained 5 pounds. She may get a vet visit. :? Then again, she will eat 20 silkworms in one sitting. I guess that could be the problem.

That's what I thought too! Odahviing doesn't love silkworms at all, and I'm awful with them. They die fast with me. :-( I gave up on them. They make me cry. They say feed them all they want for fifteen minutes. . . . My GOSH!!! She eats a lot....

Leo's my fat one but he's healthy & can run fast & swim for ages when he wants to. I try to get him out every day so he runs around, but right now it's pouring rain outside & that seems to affect them. So tomorrow it will be the big bathtub where he'll swim for about 2-3 minutes, back & forth, back & forth & I'm going to try Gabriel, too, he loves to swim. The rest don't like the water, they either try to keep jumping out of their bath in the kitchen sink (which is quite deep), like Didi & Lonzo, which is good exercise, or Rubio will just lay in the water & climb out of the sink, he's so long! If I put him in the tub, he'll stay in the same place I put him, won't even move his tail, until I take him out. So they're all different.

I have to rinse out their tanks, too; I'll see if I can get to it tomorrow. Weekends go by soooo fast!

I never feed Ginger for 15 minutes straight. She eats so fast that she is full in 5 minutes and she has eaten twice everyone else. She literally leaps off her hammock for her salad. LOL

I have great news - Papa just ate 4 silkworms. :blob8:

Woot! Good boy.

Yeah, the fifteen minute thing is that they get to eat until they're full or for as much as they like for fifteen minutes... Thing is, Odahviing would EAT FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES if it were, say, Phoenix Worms.

Woohoo thats a good papa smurf LOL! Boy Kratos is the worst eater ever. He ONLY wants supers and I refuse to give them very often. He will eat a little bit of his salad and sometimes he will eat a few butters but he hates all other feeders. MAYBE, if i'm lucky he will eat one dubia every few weeks or so.

Sounds like Papa needs to come teach Kratos to be a better eater

No, don't be fooled. Papa is a terrible eater. He acts like he is blind and can't see when he doesn't want to eat. It is super annoying. I'm hoping it is lack of appetite from coccidia. :? He otherwise acts normal and hasn't had diarrhea. :?: I hope he is okay. Seems fine...

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
