Our Little Happy Lair! Featuring Copper, Onyx, and Ruby!

It's amazing what almost 4 months can make. That's when my love got me Copper, September 5, 2011. He has 4 other sub-adult beardies who currently reside at his ex's home. Copper was the ideal pet, and we have had no problems with him from the start. His vivacious & mischievous attitude, instantly brings a smile to our faces. We first started putting him on our bed to roam, however once he figured out how to jump off, there was no stopping him. He's definitely man of the house, and has that Alpha-male attitude to go with it, even though he's probably the youngest.

Shortly after, we rescued Onyx from Petco. At first, we were very concerned about Onyx, as Copper was at home when handled. Onyx, was a completely different story. At nearly twice the size of Copper, Onyx was as skittery as they come. We also had to see how Onyx managed his hunting and moving, as he/she has a significant tail nip, as well as missing 4 out of 5 toes on it's left rear foot. After we had figured all of this, then it seemed that he/she was impacted. Sluggish, barely eating, barely moving, but still very skittish, a few warm baths everyday, with a belly message, seemed to remedy that. Today, Onyx is very laid back, and a favorite of my love's youngest daughter. Though for a while we referred to Onyx as "him" we have recently began to rethink this, and are just awaiting the right time to double check him/her.

Nearly a month ago, Ruby joined our happy little home. Though I was anticipating a dragon half her size, she came home via John at Imperial Dragons, and she was twice as beautiful as her pic! Her disposition has earned her the nickname Big Momma.

Seeing Copper and Ruby interact is priceless...Copper, despite his size, acts all tough, bobs his head, puffs and darkens his beard...I'm still trying to get a pic, he's too darn cute! Ruby is much more...ambitious when it comes to interacting with Onyx. Simply because, Onyx doesn't care either way.

Sounds like you have some pretty wonderful beardies. I can't wait to see pictures!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for saving Onyx from the horrible pet store! For reptiles you wouln't think that they would have different personalities, but they sure do. They are all special in there own way.

Okay, so we're a bit late, but HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!!

I weighed the babies yesterday, and all are doing well.

Copper weighs in at 115 grams and 13 inches nose to tail.

Onyx isn't too far ahead, 122 grams, and 12.5 inches (Onyx does have a tail nip)

Ruby blows them both out of the water weighing 220 grams, and measuring 16 inches!!!

So Bill and I are thinking of changing around Copper and Onyx's tanks, as Onyx LOVES laying on the homemade hammock we have in his/her tank, but it's becoming too small for her. We steralized a section of plastic screen used by our supplier for cricket shipping, and after some 'stitching' with a spare strand, we attached it to his/her viv, just behind his/her favorite rock.

Alas, our top priority at this point is to build Ruby a viv. For the last 6 weeks, I have been in a full arm cast following surgery, so we've had to wait...Big Momma HATES waiting, as proof by the mess we came home to in her tank after the doctor's.

We're also trying to figure out if we want the stack all the vivs or make a storage unit under Copper & Onyx's, and set Ruby up on her own storage as well. I'm definitely favoring the latter.

Here are pics of the vivs for Copper:

Recently we added a type of strip "hammock" to Copper's viv, it's been a while since we put it in and it seemed like he wasn't going really use it, until we saw this...

I couldn't resist taking this pic, I felt so bad when the flash went off (though I thought it was turned off). Afterwards, we covered him with a little blanket just to be sure he was kept warm.

We had unusually warm weather today, and with that, I decided to take Onyx on a little outing to the bank today. Keeping him/her just inside my fleece vest (added insurance of heat), it was cute hearing the people in line behind me comment and the hint of surprise in their voices when they spotted her after climbing up to nozzle into my neck (Onyx's favorite hang out spot on me). Here's another pic of Onyx, in it's other favorite hang-out, the hammock under it's basking light.

And we can't leave out Ruby :) Here she is after running the kitchen, she found a piece of plywood set aside for her viv...

and here, she tried to overtake Copper's Styrofoam "house"

After feeding the babies, I noticed something going on with Onyx. Its almost like she's become partially blind on her left side. I will be calling the vet tomorrow morning, I'm not quite sure what to think, there's so many different causes, problems, etc. He/She's been lethargic since joining our family mid-September, but is more bright-eyed, and less skiddish. When feeding she does a side to side dancing or teetering as if looking for the crickets, and her greens. Onyx's poop does look relatively normal, though unless in a bath, it only occurs once every 2 or three days. He/She is about 5-6 months old, and as I have said prior, has a significant tail nip, and only has one toe on it's left hind leg. Our vivs are 4x2x2 with non-adhesive shelf liner (and newspaper under to fill the gap between the edge of the liner and the viv). The temps are 95 in basking, 80 in the cooler side, with a reptisun 10.0 uv linear bulb. He/She does have stress marks on his/her belly. Any thoughts would be helpful, as I am a truly worried beardie Mom.

Update on Onyx...and a New Viv for Ruby :blob5:

So after some consultation, we swapped out Onyx's 75w Basking bulb for a softer 100w household bulb, it seems to be helping for the most part. Now if I could get her to poop regularly :dontknow:

It couldn't have been better timing. We purchased all the materials needed for Ruby's viv Thursday, and after marking out everything out we got our first snow storm of the season Saturday (our planned building day). Despite the confines of our home, we pushed on and by Sunday night, Miss Ruby was in her happy home.

We were originally trying for double swing out doors, but due to warping, and misalignment somewhere, we changed it to a flip up double :)

Since she has a little bit of trouble climbing up the smooth driftwood, we added an aide for her. She really loves having the running room!

Awesome job! It looks great, the doors are great, and I like how you can see across the bottom underneath the doors! Job well done! We really need to build two custom enclosures for Frank and Sunny. They're going to out grow their 40 gallons pretty quick here. I might steal your idea on the doors swinging up!

Hi there,
I had a chance to check out your thread, and I must say your babies are adorable! Just love your viv's and it shows how much time and special care you take in setting them up. The little treads on the stairs are so cute, nice touch. Also, it is nice to see that you have a soft spot for those less fortunate beardies, I can relate. I get the same response from others when my beardies want to snuggle with me, and folks are amazed. Unless you have beardies, no one can realize I'm glad you found a solution to Onyx's problem. As I was reading I was going to suggest that your temps were too low, but later found that you had your answer, I'm glad things are going well. Keep up the good work!

Kaleen - Feel free to use our idea, that's one of the many reasons I enjoy this site.

Christine - Thanks for the info for Onyx...it seems like now all she wants to do is relax on inclines or vertically at times. Like so:

But she is SO much better than how she was when we first got her.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
