Thats awesome getting a nice viv it sounds like. With such a little guy I would make a cardboard wall to shorten it up a bit for feeding. unless you are planning taking him out for feeding. He looks just like mine haha. Well im kind of glad people still go to petsmart not knowing because its people like you that rescue them without even knowing it.

One of my sons friends goes to a career building school (boces) and he is going to see if he can get some kids in bulding trades to build me one. Make it a class project. Hope that pans out, it will be free then.

Gotta good looking guy there. :blob8:

Im going to feeder him insects in the old cage and a salad in the big viv cool side.
I rescued mine from petco. I wish Id have taken the smaller rad dragon. He had beautiful color but was skin and bones. I opted for a healthier dragon. I love my little one though. He is comming along very fast. smart as hell too.

Oh yeah, we have the crickets in the basement in his old tank and thats in a kiddie pool (escapees dont get far). But we have a blue tupaware bowl that we go and get them with and as soon as he sees us grab that bowl he knows something good is coming his way ha ha

You do know the woman around here will beat you up if you have a baby BD and dont take pics. Your warned

hi. i am new to this site as well and found the best help so far vs. any store (even the breeder). its funny you posted this today as i am just back from a cricket run to my local petland. Inside of the store i found a bunch of young (18 tops) kids looking at the tank of beardies (which all looked very dark and unhappy) and spur of the moment decided they wanted to buy one. they turned to the guy working (also a young kid) and said i think i want one. all i need is a heat light right? and the kid was like yea, pretty much. (?!!!!) i got out of the store and called my husband upset cuz thats a beardie that will unfortunately, most likely  lose its life before the week is out.

I am glad some of you have had better experiences at such chain pet stores that I have had. I guess what it boils down to is I can deal with people giving me terrible information and advice. This has happened my whole life and I should just be used to it by now. My biggest problem is that the poor animals that they have for sale can't do the research I have done and take care of themselves. Instead, they rely on the knowledge of their owner, which I certainly hope isn't obtained from the employees. One would think that a national chain of pet stores would at least have a database of knowledge on how to at least roughly take care of one of these animals. Instead, I think my poor beardie would be dead by now. He has eaten more crickets today than the petsmart employee said they would eat in a couple weeks. Breathtaking. Anyway, thanks for all the help and support, and good luck to everyone getting a dragon. They are such amazing animals and I know just by you reading this you are in the right place to learn more and how to take care of your new dragon. What an amazing resource we have here. Props to this community.

Your bearded will do fantastic in a 40 gallon breeder. Next time petco has there 1 dollar tank sale go for it. I bought mine that way. You may think they need a bigger space but when they are babies they move around a lot more than when they are adults....my Boy Zippy is in a 40 gallon...where does he stay all day? On his log...sometimes I go in there and poke him to make sure he is still alive....he looks like a statue so stoic on his branch. Same with my girls they have their "spots" in this GINAORMAS cage I built for them and they hardly ever go anywhere...Just make sure its big enough for your adult beardie to turn around. I bought my Pip at petsmart. The people at our petsmart own beardies of their own. I was told that they couldn't have too many crickets because they would eat too much and throw up...which is true but thats like at alot more that 3 or 4 a day....

I hope you enjoy your beardie as much as I love mine!

You can maybe be able to tell the sex now...he or she looks pretty decent size...that tree he/she was on is the small tree they sell at petsmart right? My Pip LOVED her tree! I bought her the big one because she outgrew the small one and then she broke the big one because she weighed too much.

The way you know when they are that small (it isn't 100% full proof) but the boys have visible pores on their back legs. Usually you can't see the pores when they are that young if its a female. Hold the bearded in your hand and slowly lift his tail...not to forcefully but enough to where it won't go anymore without force. Look right above the vent. You can role the tail to see it. Males have two bumps and females have one bump. Im sure you know this but check and see sometimes you can tell really early. I know I can see it at about 4 weeks and pet stores usually don't sell beardies younger than 5 or 6 weeks.

I think one of the best things we can do to alleviate the misinformation at pet stores, in particular, is to recommend this site. I have recommended it to a couple of people already. It allows folks a chance to look over information for themselves without being on the defensive or feeling embarrassed because they feel they should know (and they should :p) what they are talking about.

To further this do you think a "Before you buy" section would be helpful? Then you layout start up costs and things like that to let people know up front.
IMHO I think it would.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
