New Beardie/Shocked at Petsmart

First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Brian and my girlfriend and I just purchased a Bearded Dragon yesterday. I did lots of research before my purchase so I knew what I was getting myself into and knew what to buy, but I had not read any warnings about purchasing one from a chain pet store. I naively assumed that these would be of better quality than a local pet store so I traveled to 2 different petsmarts to find one. All I can say is just WOW, at the breathtaking stupidity of the employees that were supposedly "experts".

First, we had to wait for the reptile "expert" to be done with break to help us. Then, after informing her I want A bearded dragon, she proceeds to take two out and hand them to me. I responded with, sorry I don't know if you heard me but I only would like one and I would like to pick it myself just to make sure it looked ok. She got upset with me and proceeded to tell me that I should be getting two because they love living together and just one will get lonely, not to mention she seemed annoyed I wanted to pick out one for myself. After reading on numerous websites that they are solitary animals and its only really practical to keep 2 females together plus the large tank I would need to house 2 I said no thank you. Then when asking about what should be in the cage, I cited everything I believed I would need such as a tank, uvb light, basking light, reptile carpet, light timer, etc....and she said well sounds like you don't need help so just holler if I had any questions. It was getting late so I asked if I could have some small crickets and of course they were out of them. She said, "Well don't worry they were just fed (and at this point she starts using her fingers to count the days of the week), monday or tuesday so they should be fine until tomorrow (this would be 2-3 days without being fed!), so I drove like a lunatic to another petsmart to get crickets.

It was here that possibly caused the impetus for this post. Here, right before they closed, I asked a young man for some small crickets to feed my new dragon. He asked, "Like how many do you want, 10-15?" I said, "Well no, I have read that a juvenile can eat 20-50+ small crickets a day so can I have 50" (I was planning on ordering at least 500 that night online, I just wanted something to hold me over). He then proceeded to laugh at me, look at me like I was a small stupid child and tell me, "Um you got some wrong information, trust me they eat 6-8 tops every few days. If you feed them more, the crickets will eat there way out of the lizards stomach and kill it". At this point I am biting my tongue and trying not to scream at him. Anyways, I apologize for the rant, I just cant believe the shear stupidity I encountered from "experts" whom I knew more than after doing a few hours of research. I guess I learned my lesson!

Wow, when will these people learn?
Instead of trying to teach them the way they do (whatever that may be). They should just tell them to get on BD.org and learn what they can.

You did a great job, if you ever go back, after a month or so bring along your dragon, show them who's boss.

Thanks, I have been putting off writing this for over a day now, and scanning the forum topics it seems I am not the only one that has encountered such stupidity. I'm just glad that I did a lot of research before I made this purchase. What happens to the person that walk in, says oh thats cute I want one, and then solely listens to the advice of these people. Poor animals, it makes me angry. Anyway, I'm so happy to be a beardie owner now, and I hope to learn/contribute to this community. Thanks for this wonderful resource.

Hello and welcome

It is crazy what the pets stores try to tell people and what "information" they seem to know. It's great that you have read up on the supplies that you really need. When you have a chance we would love to see a pic

He seems to be eating well. 25ish crickets so far today with 2 feedings, I am going to try and give him some more shortly. After reading almost all day I just managed to spend another 200 dollars on more supplies for him/her! Its quite strange not naming my pet, but I want to wait until I know the sex. I figure he/she is about 6 inches in length or so, so in a few more weeks I should be able to tell, right?

Maybe.. to each their own. They develop at different rates, grow at different rates so forth. Usually you can tell around the 10-14 inch period.
What all did you get?

Well of course the stuff I asked the people at petsmart if the things I were getting were right (I know, not smart, but I know better now), to purchase those and discover that I needed a better UVB light, better ways of measuring temperatures, better care for crickets if I am going to be buying them in bulk. I also noticed last night (based on the stick-up-dial thermometer that I will have corrected tomorrow with a temp gun) that the temps got to about 60 degrees. I know this is a little too cold so I bought a thermal pad to put underneath and an infrared lamp for the time being until I upgrade his 20 gallon tank to something larger. A few other things too like a new bulb holder (sorry don't know the correct term), and a cricket feeder thing because my beardie seems to like watching the crickets and gets so excited he is jumping up and down but once I put them in he kind of sits on his basking rock until they come near him. He doesn't seem so actively hunt so I had to put just a couple in at a time so i knew how many i put in just in case i had to pull them out. Quick couple questions, I tried last feeding to make it easier for both of us by placing him in a large tuperware container and putting the crickets in there with him so they couldn't hide. He ate 10-15 or so but he seemed slightly stressed because he was trying to get out and looked a little antsy or something. Is this too much for a beardie only 2 days old? I just don't want a forgotten cricket munching on em at night!

Sorry, meant to put this in my last post and I suppose this should go in the enclosure section but I would hate to spam with yet another thread, but I want to start planning my beardie's next enclosure well in time to move him/her in. I want to get something around 55 gallons, but I would like some suggestions. Everything I have seen is either too small, too big, screened and not glass, or not much height. Maybe I am just picky but is there a place you guys would recommend getting his/her last tank, or am i better off building one myself. Again, thanks for the help.

In one sitting for a new dragon being fed in a separate container/enclosure 10-15 isn't bad. This is an ideal way to feed crickets and such as you don't have to remove the uneaten ones from under the carpet/decor etc..
If this was the first time you had done this then 10-15 is good. Keep this routine up and the dragon will come around. Try to have a max of about 5-8 in at a time, too many can get scary for the dragon.

Look into a 40-55 gallon breeder enclosure.
Or build you own if you are savvy enough. :blob8:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
