While in the BD.org chatroom there was a guy who thought he had a Bearded Dragon. It was actually a chinese water dragon... He said that he got it at PetCo. How awful is that? Makes me hate PetCo even more... Why would they let someone walk out the door with a animal when they think it was a totally different species?

That guy wasn't ready for a Beardie.. These people still need to do their *Homework* before they buy anykind of animal. I don't feel to bad for that person that got the wrong animal...

AWESOME petition and idea, Vicky! It's very well-written and you make some excellent points. I am about to sign!

Some suggestions:
Should calci-sand be capitalized? Maybe you should site some brands that are dangerous?
Can you write something about filthy tanks? I know my Petco does not adequetly clean their cages, and this can lead to parasites, ect.

Just some suggestions, you don't have to change anything. Great petition though, it has a great chance of making a huge differance!

Just thought I would share a recent e-mail I sent to PETCO along with their response..sorry it is so long, but as u can see they dont seem like they want to do anything else but back up their so-called commitment to animal care!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!

The email I sent:

I was completely uphauled at the current care of the stores certain reptiles, the bearded dragons. This is the case with every clutch brought into the store to sell. First of all, they are on the wrong substrate. As babies, they should be on paper towels or something similar. Sand and any other loose substrate can and most likely will cause impaction. Secondly, they are in poor shape. They are so weak and lethargic. The proper diet is not being fed to them. Mealworms of any size are a big NO-NO. They have to much phosphorus, no nutritional value, and their shells are way to chitinous to be absorbed and digested. Ok, now for my experience. I was in the store looking at the babies as I always do when in there to make a purchase. I saw one lonely baby in the tank. He was practically skin and bones and could barely hold his head up. I brought the condition of this beardie up to one of the store workers. He said "oh hes fine, they always do that" to which I replied no, if they are taken care of, they are bright and perky and bouncing off the glass. He then proceeded to open the tank and pull out the baby as if he were magically going to make him alright. Well, what happened next horrified me. He held the baby in his hand. The baby then jerked a little and this 6 foot something bohemith of a guy shreaked and dropped the baby to the ground. I asked him that if since they didnt know proper bearded dragon care if he would adopt the baby out to me. He said hed talk to his manager. The next day as soon as they opened, I showed up. I asked to speak to the manager who was amazed at my story. She had no clue what I was talking about, but sadly the baby didnt make it through the night. I was furious. Had he let me take it, it would still be alive. I feel that in a life or death situation, the option of adopting out should be there! That baby died b/c of the ignorance of this store!!! I am tempted to never shop at another Petco agaon. Go ahead and look up my phone number in the pals database... you will see I am a very usual customer. I hope u do something about this!!

The e-mail they sent:

Yeah I keep hearing about these "specialists" and I just dont that any training could be involved with the decisions that have been made.I wont go into petco at all anymore.I have switched to petsmart for my dog and cats needs and I have a reptile store I use for the beardies.Although Petsmart is flawed also they have at least made an attempt to correct some of the issues.

I just find it really sad that people are being paid for being so called knowledgable about pets, but they really appear to have no clue. I too have switched to another privately owned pet store. I think I will start going to target for the cats. I have to drive 20 minutes to get anyhting for my beardies, but at least they are knowledgeable and if they dont know, they research and fix the problem. I wish i knew the next step to take now. The e-mail obviously got no results. They seem to feel they are doing "everything they can"! I just don't get it! I wonder if the better business bureau would be able to get involved?

Ok, i am sure all of you have seen the post on the email I sent. Well, I am probably going to be sending another one!! Yes, I went into petco today. I am going to continue to go just to keep an eye on things and see if they are improving any! Well, sadly they havent improved!!! In my eyes it is ALOT worse!!! I was doing my usual stroll through the reptiles when I noticed something aweful!! EVERY SINGLE CAGE WAS COMPLETELY INFESTED WITH MITES!!! The poor babies in the tanks looked so miserable!! OMG!!! Is it ever going to end? Will the animals sold at PETCO ever live a happy life?? Please guys, we have got to do something fast!!

That is truly sickening. Petco continues to p-ss me off.

I had an idea, however. If you live near a veterinarian, or happen to know one.. See if they would accompany you into the store. Note, they should know -something- about reptiles, obviously. Have them overview the condition the animals are in, and if they agree they are not being kept properly get them to sign a note, have it -in paper-. Then get ahold of the proper humane authorities. With an actual professional backing up claims they will have no choice but to listen.

Keep records of every contact you make with the store. From visits to phone calls, get the names of the employees you speak to (that part is important!). If you can, snap pictures with your cell phone with the date stamped on them.

After a couple of months of observation and evidence piling, that would make one heck of an email.

Thats a great idea.Maybe I will call my vet and see what he thinks about the idea.

Just an update.... four days later and no improvement. Just to show they dont clean their cages there are tons of baby crickets in the tanks along with the mites. Who do I contact? I have tried once again to e-mail PETCO
My email:

Ok, it's me again. Yes I have another gripe and you will continue seeing e-mails from me until the store is brought up to par!! I went to PETCO today and as usual, did my litle sweep through the reptiles. UNBELIEVABLE!!! The tanks are completely infested with mites!! All the animals look completely miserable!! This store is becoming disgusting!! Again, I am uphauled. How can you claim to put your best interests into the animals when Every time I go to your store, I see problem after problem!! This really needs to be addressed soon!! I really hope you do something. These animlas are suffering needless amounts of torture! It is sickening!

Their response:

Dear Christy,

Thank you for contacting PETCO regarding your concern with our store Worth Lane. We are truly sorry that you are upset with the care of the animals, particularly the reptiles.

PETCO is dedicated to ensuring that all animals receive more than just the basics to survive. We truly care about the quality of life animals have while in our care and their lives once they've joined their new families. Our standards of care ensure that all animals are checked-on every hour. During this check, we observe the health and behavior of the animals, refill food & water and tidy up as needed. This check is in addition to the regular full service feeding and cleaning that all animals receive daily.

Our associates treat the animals as if they were their own pets. They often spend a great deal of time playing with, talking to and socializing with the animals so they will make good pets for their new owners.

If you're ever in one of our stores and you see something that you believe would not meet our high standards for animal care, I urge you to contact the manager on duty immediately. We have every confidence our managers will respond with urgency to make sure an animal has everything it needs and is in good health. If you feel that the manager does not respond appropriately to a situation, please don't hesitate to call us toll free at 888-824-PALS.

Sincerely,

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
