Just thought I would share a recent e-mail I sent to PETCO along with their response..sorry it is so long, but as u can see they dont seem like they want to do anything else but back up their so-called commitment to animal care!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!
The email I sent:
I was completely uphauled at the current care of the stores certain reptiles, the bearded dragons. This is the case with every clutch brought into the store to sell. First of all, they are on the wrong substrate. As babies, they should be on paper towels or something similar. Sand and any other loose substrate can and most likely will cause impaction. Secondly, they are in poor shape. They are so weak and lethargic. The proper diet is not being fed to them. Mealworms of any size are a big NO-NO. They have to much phosphorus, no nutritional value, and their shells are way to chitinous to be absorbed and digested. Ok, now for my experience. I was in the store looking at the babies as I always do when in there to make a purchase. I saw one lonely baby in the tank. He was practically skin and bones and could barely hold his head up. I brought the condition of this beardie up to one of the store workers. He said "oh hes fine, they always do that" to which I replied no, if they are taken care of, they are bright and perky and bouncing off the glass. He then proceeded to open the tank and pull out the baby as if he were magically going to make him alright. Well, what happened next horrified me. He held the baby in his hand. The baby then jerked a little and this 6 foot something bohemith of a guy shreaked and dropped the baby to the ground. I asked him that if since they didnt know proper
bearded dragon care if he would adopt the baby out to me. He said hed talk to his manager. The next day as soon as they opened, I showed up. I asked to speak to the manager who was amazed at my story. She had no clue what I was talking about, but sadly the baby didnt make it through the night. I was furious. Had he let me take it, it would still be alive. I feel that in a life or death situation, the option of adopting out should be there! That baby died b/c of the ignorance of this store!!! I am tempted to never shop at another Petco agaon. Go ahead and look up my phone number in the pals database... you will see I am a very usual customer. I hope u do something about this!!
