Hi guys. Sorry I sort of invaded this post as its for megaray and I have been talking about T-Rex. But I called T-Rex today and they said that they were not recalling their bulbs and that they havnt had any problems with them. However the store I bought it from is going to replace mine hopefully with a non defected one.

Hello Everyone,

I was informed by Cindy(puffsmama) that she had contacted John Wolff this morning and that he stated that the problems with the Megarays have been solved. I called John and indeed the issues with the bulbs have been fixed :D He will be making a detailed post some time this week as to how they have fixed the problem. He apologizes for not posting on the thread lately, but that he has been directing his entire focus on testing the bulbs and getting them ready for shipping. He explained to me the long drawn out testing process that they are going through with these bulbs to assure that they are absolutely safe for our pets, which I'm sure he will explain in his post.
I think he has done a stand up job and appreciate him keeping us informed under the circumstances that he is dealing with.

Hello,

That would be great. John & Bob have been working very hard to get them fixed I know, & it is extremely time consuming to do all of that testing on them, too. I am looking forward to seeing his post on the subject & the explanation of how they did fix it. :D
They have definitely gone above & beyond the call of duty to get them fixed, unlike other companies, that is for sure.

Anyone find out any news about replacing the bulbs? I still have both of my defective bulbs. I'm currently using two solar glo's in my two viv's but when the megaray is fixed im going to return to that... Just wondering if there was any time frame?

Hello All,

I know I said I was going to post more information on the fix this week, and I will have it done before the weekend is out. I have been swamped with trying to catch up on shipping, and getting all the defective bulbs replaced. Anyone who still has a defective bulb should of course contact me via email at [email protected].

I wish I had had time to write something up while working this week, but I just did not. I will get something up over the weekend when I have more time to focus on it. Sorry for the delay.

I'm glad the megas are now fixed. I do have a couple of questions, for anyone that can answer them. We want to get a couple of 60 watt eb setups when our tax refund comes in, about 2 weeks from now. The reason we decided on this is the cost of the replacement bulb next year, besides I don't have to worry about replacing the reptisun 10 tube we would be using if we didn't use the MVB and, also, we the heat in our bedroom in the summer makes the 100 watt t-rex we have get our girls' tanks close to 120 f and they don't like it much above 99f or 100f and these don't give out much heat. I do realize that we will have to use an additional heat bulb along with this bulb.

We also want to get the digital LUX meter for about $44. I know that's not the top of the line uvb meter but it's all we can afford right now. How do you use this particular meter? Is it one that I can check how good the 2 t-rex's output that we've had in use for almost one year now? We plan on getting all three products at the same time. I assume that it's better to use this meter from the start as far as knowing if the output of the MVB's are still good enough for our beardies. Is this correct?

Also, is there anything else I need to know about them? Also when will they be available to ship? If I order them in about 2 weeks, will they be available to ship then?

Thanks.

Hello Everyone,

As I am sure you noticed I did not get the chance to write up my report this weekend, as I promised I would. I apologize for the extra delay.

I am going to start with a much abbreviated overview of what has taken place thus far. A lot of this is Information most of you already have, but in the interest of continuity, I want this report to encompass the whole situation.

In September of 2009, the company that manufactures our bulbs for us informed us that they had gotten an exceptionally clean quality of glass in compared to what we have been using for years. In October, when we received the first batch of bulbs manufactured using this new glass, our onsite testing revealed that the bulbs were spiking too high a reading when measured using a SolarMeter model 6.5. To correct this, we modified the bulbs using a frost spray, which we had been using for years to make our “Low” bulbs.

Unfortunately, as many of you have experienced, this frost spray did not stick, and actually began to flake and peel after about a week. This then exposed the animals under these bulbs to a dangerous level of UV that they would not get in nature.

When it became apparent that our current methods were not working, we sent the bulbs off for testing by Dr. Frances Baines. She informed us that the bulbs were actually allowing a low level radiation that you do not see in our atmosphere to leak through to the animals. At this point we halted all shipping until we could find a fix for the problem that we could be sure of.

Once we knew about the additional problem, we began experimenting with different ways to safely modify the bulbs. We eventually tried a solution called Aqua 222, which was water based and blocks UV. This product is a high performance, organic glass coating designed as an alternative to acid etching and cold end coatings. It is a green product, and is environmentally friendly. It is non-toxic, non-corrosive, and solvent free. Most importantly for us, it has UV inhibitive properties.

Now, we sent several bulbs modified using this spray, as well as some other options we thought might work to Dr. Baines for further testing. After she completed her tests, this is what we found. The Aqua 222 spray selectively blocks out the shortwave length radiation better than any of the other options we tried. It also got the UVI readings into an acceptable range, though it did lower the total UVB output more than expected. Because we know that a bulb with a UVI reading of 3-6 will cause your animal to produce excellent levels of D3, we opted to use the Aqua 222 solution as a temporary fix to the problem, and we firmly believe that this will NOT cause any health issues for any animal using bulbs with this modification.

UVI readings on this bulb average the range out to a 4.5, which is perfect for Vitamin D3 production. It is still very important that the bulbs be used at appropriate distances, and we will be taking measures in the future to make it more clear what those distances are. I have updated the statement that comes with all bulbs to include a note about the minimum distance NOT being the optimum distance for most species, along with several other updates to outdated information.

Now, some of our customers have noticed that shipping is not moving quite as fast as it used to. I would like to take a moment address this.

To properly apply and cure this new modification is actually somewhat time consuming. We have to first test the bulbs, and mark down the readings we get on the bulb itself. They are then sprayed, 12 at a time, and then baked in an oven at 400 degrees, to properly cure and harden. They are then retested to ensure safety, and if found to be within the acceptable range we clean off the readings, and make sure the bulb is in good working order. They are then placed to the side, and the process starts all over again on the next batch. If the bulbs are not safe after the initial coating is applied we repeat the process. Any bulb found to be unsafe after two coatings is set to the side and marked “unusable”.

As you can see, this is somewhat more time consuming then it used to be, when we were still using the older glass.

I want to stress to everyone that we do hope this will only be a temporary fix. It works for these “CLEAR, CLEAN GLASS” bulbs, but we hope to get more of the older quality back in, and be able to go back to our original bulb. However, this is the best and safest option we have found for ensuring your pets safety.
I hope this provides a clearer understanding of what has been done to ensure the safety of your pets, while also making sure we are putting out a bulb that meets our high standards. Thank you again, for your patience, understanding, and loyalty through all of this. It means the world to all of us here at ReptileUV.

Thank you John for your very clear explanation. One question, does this limit the life expectancy of the bulb in any way? If so to what degree?
Once again thanks for being so great through all of this I really appreciate it.
I wish other companies worked the same way you guys do.

We do not foresee this changing the life expectancy of the bulb, since it does not trap any additional heat in the bulb. Our warranty will remain the same, so if any problems do arise, we will of course care for them as we always have.

We are also having issues with Fluffy's MVB. I admit I have not read through all 22 pages, but I was wondering if it is all bulbs or only certain ones? I know for a fact one of ours is bad, but the other one is a different kind and just wondering if it is safe to still use since I have not noticed Abe having any problems. Also, how long is it suppose to take for her to be able to open her eyes? I have already had her at the vet once for this and it looks like she will be going again Wednesday.

I believe I just responded to an email you sent me. Not all bulbs from certain batches were bad, which is why when I originally issued the recall I did not specify a batch number for the bulbs. In reference to how long it takes for the eyes to heal, it really does vary a great deal from one animal to the next. I have had people email me the next day and say their animals eyes were open, and they were completely back to normal. Then, in instances where the bulb was left over the animal for an extended period of time, recovery can take much longer. Is fluffy eating? Is she showing any other adverse reactions, other than the fact that she does not want to open her eyes?

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
