A few days after I got my megaray, my bd was closing his eyes all the time, especially when basking under the megaray. I replaced it with a floodlight and now his eyes are perfectly normal, so I'm glad it was only a bad bulb and not a serious health problem with my beardie! Hopefully when I get my new megaray there wont be any more eye problems.

Could anyone post a picture of what the peeling frost coating looks like? I got my bulb just about two weeks ago and installed it 4 days ago. The frost has turned brownish in large spots and just looks really weird but I can't tell for sure if it's peeling. Just today Pheeny (my 3.5yo) started keeping her eyes closed almost all day. Thanks!

Hey All,

Dawn, if you could email me directly I would love to talk to you about your bulb. In fact, if your concerned, I would rather just got ahead and get a new one on it's way as soon as I can. If your not seeing any peeling of the frost you should be fine, but I would still like to discuss the bulb with you directly. In reference to the request for pictures of peeling or flaking bulbs, I do want to tell you all that there are two ways you could see this in your bulb. One is just a flaking of the frost, with no discoloration. The other starts with the bulb face turning a yellowish brown color, and then slowly going to a darker brown. This is again due to different types of frost we used for different levels of UV. I can't say this enough, but ANYONE who is experiencing an issue with their bulb should remove it and contact me directly. If you are just concerned about your bulb, and have not started using it yet, I will gladly pay to get the bulb back to me, and test it to ensure it is safe for for you to use. This is of course within reason. I can't take bulbs that were purchased prior to October back for testing at my cost, as that is when we first started having the issue and began the heavier modifications. Anyone who purchased a bulb prior to that timeframe would have to pay the return shipping cost, and if we find the bulb is indeed defective, we would then issue a refund in the amount paid to get the bulb to us, and of course pay for shipping a new bulb out.

As always, any questions should be forwarded via email, though I am in the office during the day and will take phone calls when I am available to do so.

I just had a problem with my megaray.

About a week ago my lizard tried to stop basking, he would avoid the bask as much and often as he could, he not long after stopped eating completely and his stool was once every other day to two days. Closing his eyes under the bask and very sleepy looking all the time. He would perk up while out of his tank but once he was back under his bask he was very upset and angry.

Today I changed his 100Watt MVB out for a 100watt household bulb and he has since came around eating, had a stool and looking much better and even eating again.

I noticed no flaking or burn spots on the MVB I have. It looks normal. I purchased the bulb in June-July of 2009.. began using it full time after the initial burn in on september 2009. It has not been the 9-12 month period I was given that the bulb would die in. I did notice that it had started to flicker on and off a little only seen this once or twice, but it came right back on within minutes each time. I have nothing negative to say about the bulb except for the fact that I expected the item to last a little longer and my dragon had to suffer a bit before I realized what was truely going on with him.

He seems to be back to his old self.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Thanks for posting your data for John. Don't forget to contact him regarding this. I know that he will be checking in on this thread soon as well.
Just to put my data here, I have been using Megarays for years & have had great success with them. They normally last well over a year, with great output of UVB emissions. Unfortunately, you just had a little bit of bad luck. John & Bob will get you all fixed up.

I am new to the meaga ray and cant stress enough how pleased I am with Reptile UV and John in paticular. I emailed him right after I got my bulbs last week with one issue then found out about this issue, and emailed him again. He was extremely prompt in getting back to me. I had not expected to hear from him until Monday and recieved a reply almost instantly from him He has ben more than helpful. I had heard such rave reviews I was ready to get my babies under these lamps, even with this issue occuring I am more than confident this has to be the best bulb and company out there. In all my years I have never seen a company more dedicated to the health and well being of anyone.

AS I type this my new safe bulbs are scheduled to be here tomarrow. John again thank you so much for your wonderful attitude and willingness to be so helpful!!!!!

I just wanted to pop in and say thank you for the compliment, I really do appreciate it. I also wanted to address the issue with the bulb that was purchased back in June-July of 09. It is physically impossible for a bulb to be used for months on end, and all of a sudden start developing these issues. UV output simply does not spike from a bulb that has been in use that long. In fact, the UV would slowly decrease with use, not increase. I have already stated that anyone who has concerns with their bulbs purchases before mid to late October is more than welcome to ship the bulb back to us for testing, but if a bulb has been in use for months, there is absolutely no chance that it would just start causing these problems out of nowhere.

Just thought I would let you all know, I emailed and asked which bulbs were affected and was told 100w, 160w AND the 60w. Earlier in this thread there is a post that states the 60w would not get hot enough to have the problem. Although I haven't seen anyone say they have had a problem with the 60w EB bulb. Maybe this info should be put in the first post.

Thanks urrout! I will email John about the 60W EB to be absolutely sure it is included in the recall. Once I hear back from him and it is confirmed I will add that to the original post.

Hey everyone,

I am going to confirm for you that we did get a batch of 60 watt bulbs in that had high UV, though I have yet to have an issues with anyones animals under this bulb. I did not ship any from this batch, and the previous batch tested fine. I am going to reiterate, anyone who sees any eye sensitivity, or peeling from the face of the bulb should immediately remove the bulb and contact me. The main bulb we had the problem with is the 100 watt bulb, and I was lucky enough to get a rush order of those in, which arrived today. We have had a very few reports of issues with the 160 watt bulbs, and to date I have not received any complaints about the 60 watt bulb. However, I would still rather err on the side of caution, so if you are using any bulb purchased from us since mid October up to last Friday, please do watch for these symptoms. Nothing is worth risking the health and well being of your pet, not to me.

I was having issues myself with bulbs I bought in the begining of the year, so I contacted John. I, of course, deleted most emails, and threw out my invoice. John did the leg work for me, found my order, and is shipping me 2 new bulbs! Great customer service! Customer for lfe here!

I too had issues with the mega rays. I purchased them thanksgiving night. I got them shortly thereafter and within the first week my big guy started closing his eyes. Being new to mega rays I posted my concerns here and even took my guys to the vet because I was told it couldn't be the bulb. I was beyond frustrated when my female went down hill fast. I was kinda hoping this bulb with it's reputation would be her saving grace. She passed away January 2nd. Then my baby, 6 1/2 inches at the time started to close her eyes as well. I felt like the worlds worst beardie owner. My roommate tried to comfort me but I was inconsolable. I posted again looking for any answers and still being told it couldn't be the bulb. Finally my roommate convinced me to contact John and let him know what was going on. We ruled out every possibility on our part. Fecal samples, vets and the whole nine yards. John was absolutly great! No questions asked, had me out 3 brand new bulbs within days explained to me how to return the old ones and voilà I was back in business. The days in between the old bulbs and the new ones brought back my now two babies to eating and being their mischivious selves. They stopped eating cause thier eyes hurt to bad to open them and see the food. That weekend we went to the Pomona reptile show and got two baby babies 6 inches each. When the new bulbs got here I was ubber excited! I did a short burnout period and put them on they babies and within days they all started closing thier eyes again and not seeking out food. I shut them off and contacted John again. Feeling really bad I told him of my new problem. He did not hestitate to make it right for me and mine. I would highly reccomend reptileuv to anyone (in a month or so when they get all the orders out)

Thanks John! And reptileUV!

Thanks BD.org for the info on the Megaray. I did email John at ReptileUV and got a response within 10 minutes that it sounds like the bulb is the problem and they will ship out a replacement ASAP. They even will send a label for free return of the bad bulb. He did ask for the original transaction number (understandably) so if you contact them get that number ahead of time, so you can give it to them in your original contact with them :) In another 10 minutes I had received an email with a suggestion and another with tracking number for a new bulb shipping free via priority mail.

I will definitely purchase from them in future as I see they TRUELY care about their customers and their animals. Thanks John and ReptileUV!! :notworthy:

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
