Jace, Zy, Sorin, Ava, Nissa, Koth, & Phoenix -->Vet Update

Hello,
My name is Liz and I have been a member of this website for a year now. I have had another blog about my reptilian babies (http://www.beardeddragon.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=185026), but am starting a new one. I want to start the new year with a clean slate - especially since it will also start with a new moon. I want to move on from the problems of the past and look forward to the new adventures that lie ahead.
A little about me: I'm twenty-two years old and am an author - (A Shadow's Lullaby by: E. Rexer). I go to Western New England as a Creative Writing major with a minor in Philosophy. I own six reptiles, three bearded dragons and three leopard geckos. I have been with my boyfriend, Paul, for four years. I currently work two jobs - Heritage Woods (assistant living) and Table and Vine (liquor store) though I did try to quit Heritage Woods and was guilt tripped into working there per diem (once a month). I will be putting in my two weeks notice with them in February. Unfortunately it is a sad job and emotionally I cannot handle it anymore. Table and Vine doesn't give me the hours I would like, but I worked out a deal with my grandfather that will help me out financially. Now enough about me.

Oh, something interesting that I noticed, but forgot to mention.

When I buy a reptile at Petco (not sure if PetSmart does this) they have my fill out a form with my name, number, address, etc, and give me the name of the vet they use. I've even gotten called to ask how the babies were doing a week or so later (Nissa and Koth). When I rescued Phoenix, not a single form had to be sign and they offered no information though it probably would have been all wrong anyways. I find that to be very sketchy and concerning.

When i got Deb at PetSmart the made my dad fill out something i had no idea what he did on it though.

I've yet to take home a baby from a store or breeder out of all 3 at our home...though you got Flash for us. Did you fill out paperwork there?

Yeah - Flash was from Petco. A crunmy one but a Petco all the same.

I have to admit...we have ONE really good PetSmart and ONE really good PetCo in the area. The rest are truly horrendous. I don't go into pet stores anymore, period. Not for anything. We breed dubia and I order anything else online.

I'd go broke! Haha! Just look at Phoenix! My heart can't handle the possibility of running into another Flash or Phoenix. I'd take them all home

Petsmart did that when I got Oliver and Fred, but I’ve never gotten any other pets from there before, so that’s all.
It drove me crazy the way he picked up Oliver, he like squeezed his stomach while picking him up, I just scoop them up, it made me so mad.... ...That’s another story though.

Petco/Petsmart makes you do it as well because it's a waiver saying you know you can catch salmonella from reptiles.

I don't mind going to my Petco because, after baby sitting your three and temporarily having nine reptiles, I know I can't handle it, especially now with school. Plus, my Petco does a really good job at caring for the reptiles. Granted it's not perfect, but it is not life threatening like it was in Phoenix's case. I would too. I would have had to figure out a way to rescue Phoenix on my own if you hadn't been able to help financially. That would have been a struggle.

I totally understand what you mean, Hoopy. When I asked to buy Phoenix, the kid had no idea what he was doing. I was about to ask him to let me try when he finally figured it out. It was such a nerve wracking process.

Sorin is, as I always say, a monstrous beast. He is so massive and so...Sorin

My pet stores never warned my on salmonella when purchasing. How weird.


Phoenix:
I just checked on him this morning and oh my God is he gorgeous. I cannot get over how handsome he is. That shed did wonders for him on everything but his feet and tail. I'm pretty sure he has no feeling in his tail and have no idea what that means. Will post some pictures after the vet appointment. He is just so handsome!

Phoenix looked amazing this morning. Thanks for the pic update! Can't wait to hear about the vet visit. I think I'll be at Hailey's voice lessons while you're at the vet but I'll have my phone on me!!

So...where to begin...

Phoenix did well for the appointment. He wouldn't open his mouth for her no matter how much she prodded. He did later when she was petting him under his chin and his mouth is good. He needs some special cream which we have for my horse which is good. She'll have to share. His tail and front toe will be amputated - I'll be dropping him off cage and all on Wednesday at 7:30am. Usually amputations are $1000 but she cut me a deal because she never amputated a skink's tail before and called it an education amputation at the cost of $88.85. Definitely better. He alsoa is getting 8 antibiotic shoots once every three days. She showed me and Paul how to do it. So not digging that. Neither was he.
