I raise crested and gargoyle geckos and they do not require any kind of special lighthing or heating. They thrive at room temperature of 65-78 degrees (any more or less is very dangerous for them), do not require UVB and the diet they eat is very cheap....a bag of crested gecko diet purchased from Pangea reptile is about $20 for a year for a single gecko. They do not require bugs in their diet, although you can supplement with dusted crickets or dubias. Some geckos don't care for bugs.

Adults can be housed in a 20 gallon tank tipped on its side, with a reptile screen. Finding used tanks cheap on craigs list and whatnot is usually pretty easy, and Petco often has $1 a gallon sales. Papertowels make the best substrate, easy to clean and cheap. Fake plants and vines are a necessity and can be purchased for cheap at dollar stores and hobby lobby when they have their 50% off sale.

They ARE nocturnal, but if purchased from a good breeder and handled often, they make very good pets. All of my babies are very tame because I spent a lot of time with them before they are sold, and my adults are all very easy to handle. Many people find geckos rather boring, but mine all have loads of personality and love to cuddle and hang out. You get out of a pet the time that you put into them :)

They need to be misted once or twice a day to keep humidity up. Initial cost can be a bit high depending where you get them from and if you buy a baby or an adult, and there are dozens of morphs so different colours cost more or less as well. You can get a good quality baby for $80 or so, sometimes cheaper at shows.

They are excellent starter reptiles, even more so than leo's as they don't require bugs and they don't require heat or UVB.

Ya know, I think I'm just gonna get 1 or 2 leopard geckos. After going over to my friends house, and playing with his, I really enjoyed being around his leopard gecko. It was so fun. It would have been funner if his leo didn't have an eye infection, which my friend is treating.
I think I am going to get 1 in the spring when I have enough referee money, and then some, and then another if all goes well around my birthday, both female leopard geckos. I'm going to get a 30 gallon tank.
So what do you think? Don't be rude people.

Leopard geckos are great! My friend has two and they are so docile once they get older. They're easy to handle and have such pretty colors. I also take care of two in the reptile room at a nature center I volunteer at. They're in a 30 gallon tank, have some kind of wood as a substrate, two hiding logs, a water dish, and one infrared heat light. They only consume about five or six crickets a day, each.

I have to agree geckos aren't nearly as exciting as beardies!!!! But I am super excited this evening becuase my leo finally is chasing crickets again!!!!! She has not had her sight now for a few months due to an issue with shedding and I nursed her back from the brink with reptiaid, pheonix worms, wax worms and baby food!!!! Finally she is chasing down her own food!!! Going to get her on some reptaid to keep her going!!!! YEEHAW!!!!! just had to share and yes leo's aren't as expensive as far as lights and electicity go!

Also, something to think about....around our area we have freecycle.org. You can get on their like craigslist however everything is free. That is where we just got our 55gal tank for our beardie. No matter what set up can be pricey! But, if you are really into getting any reptile keep doing your research and asking and you will do fine! Good luck!

I just got a leo and she is great, I love her. All the geckos offer something different. She's more inquisitive and outgoing than my cresties and gargs are. Took me awhile to get used to the fact that she doesn't stick though! When my cresties are on my arms and hands, they stick to me...the leo will just walk right off my hand and I was so not used to that haha. She's great though, I love her.

I'm getting a fattail gecko in the spring too, from a friend. Similar to leo's but have a bit different personality.

Make sure you offer under the tank heat for the leo...they don't do well with basking heat, they need belly heat. Mine doesn't care for crickets at all, but loves various types of worms.

What kind of calcium/vitamin powder do you use? I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get one from the reptile show in the spring, then another in the fall around September or whenever it comes around again near my birthday.

Congrats! :)
I'm hoping to get some kinda gecko in the spring or for my birthday, so I know a little about leos. They like UTHs, non-particle substrate (for same reason as beardies), Calcium with AND with out D3, vites, a cave on the hot and cool side, and a humid hide for shedding. The temps should be around 75*F on the cool side and 90*F on the warm side (You'll want to double check this... This is just off the top of my head LOL).

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
