^-^ Hello everyone~
I've been lurking around the forums here for a few weeks now, so I figured it was time to introduce myself/officially join the forums. My name is Dreamsong, though most people that know me call me either Mina or Ashley (my actual name). Feel free to call me whatever you want, I'm not all that picky over what I'm called.
I've been wanting a beardie for a good thirteen years now, and after such a long wait, I'm happy to say I'll be getting one within the next few months! Yes, this will be my first beardie, but thankfully not my first reptile. About eight years ago, my family and I moved into our current house, and three of us four 'kids' (all in our 20s now) wound up having several Leopard Geckos as pets. Five in total consisting of three males and two females, all housed in separate enclosures, given the proper lighting and heating, the works. The oldest one was five years old, one of my two big boys, a normal morph named Hiryu. Hiryu and Sanzo, my Leusistic male, were my pride and joy, and my nephew's Sunglow female Zen was a treasure. The other two, I don't have any pictures..Well, I do have one of Rei, the other little male when he was -very- little-. Below are the three 'prized' Leos of my family, and Hiryu walking outside of Rei's tank with him all brotherly like. All from 2008, when the older ones were 15.5-2 years old.
Hiryu and baby Rei
Hiryu and Sanzo on my niece's pink blanket, poor lighting.
Zen, who always hated getting her picture taken.
Sadly, around May of 2011, our local pet supply store where we always got our feeder insects happened to receive a contaminated shipment, and about 1/2 of all of the local reptile owners in our area lost a lot of their reptiles within a week. We lost all five of our geckos, and our vet confirmed what we'd heard from the store clerk.
A little over two years later, and my mother has agreed that I can finally get a Beardie. Since I'll likely be getting a Petsmart baby (our store is surprisingly good when it comes to their reptile's care, all our geckos aside from Zen were from petsmart), I'll be cleaning out one of our five 20gal long tanks to house it in until it's a bit bigger. I'll also be building my own 2'x2'x5' enclosure with a custom landscape, really looking forward to starting on this. Rather than buying feeders from the old store or petsmart (aside from crickets as needed), I'll be setting up my own Dubia colony, as well as ordering Phoenix Worms every now and then. The only catch there...Is my mother doesn't know what Dubia are yet, and she's not the biggest lover of bugs to begin with. We'll see how things progress, but so far plans for the enclosure are about 75% done, and I know the perfect places to buy my future Dubia & Phoenix worms.
Wish me luck!
