^-^ Hello everyone~

I've been lurking around the forums here for a few weeks now, so I figured it was time to introduce myself/officially join the forums. My name is Dreamsong, though most people that know me call me either Mina or Ashley (my actual name). Feel free to call me whatever you want, I'm not all that picky over what I'm called.

I've been wanting a beardie for a good thirteen years now, and after such a long wait, I'm happy to say I'll be getting one within the next few months! Yes, this will be my first beardie, but thankfully not my first reptile. About eight years ago, my family and I moved into our current house, and three of us four 'kids' (all in our 20s now) wound up having several Leopard Geckos as pets. Five in total consisting of three males and two females, all housed in separate enclosures, given the proper lighting and heating, the works. The oldest one was five years old, one of my two big boys, a normal morph named Hiryu. Hiryu and Sanzo, my Leusistic male, were my pride and joy, and my nephew's Sunglow female Zen was a treasure. The other two, I don't have any pictures..Well, I do have one of Rei, the other little male when he was -very- little-. Below are the three 'prized' Leos of my family, and Hiryu walking outside of Rei's tank with him all brotherly like. All from 2008, when the older ones were 15.5-2 years old.

Zen, who always hated getting her picture taken.

Sadly, around May of 2011, our local pet supply store where we always got our feeder insects happened to receive a contaminated shipment, and about 1/2 of all of the local reptile owners in our area lost a lot of their reptiles within a week. We lost all five of our geckos, and our vet confirmed what we'd heard from the store clerk.

A little over two years later, and my mother has agreed that I can finally get a Beardie. Since I'll likely be getting a Petsmart baby (our store is surprisingly good when it comes to their reptile's care, all our geckos aside from Zen were from petsmart), I'll be cleaning out one of our five 20gal long tanks to house it in until it's a bit bigger. I'll also be building my own 2'x2'x5' enclosure with a custom landscape, really looking forward to starting on this. Rather than buying feeders from the old store or petsmart (aside from crickets as needed), I'll be setting up my own Dubia colony, as well as ordering Phoenix Worms every now and then. The only catch there...Is my mother doesn't know what Dubia are yet, and she's not the biggest lover of bugs to begin with. We'll see how things progress, but so far plans for the enclosure are about 75% done, and I know the perfect places to buy my future Dubia & Phoenix worms.

Wish me luck!

That's a scary thought :( Sorry to hear that that happened to you, I can't even begin to imagine how devastating that must have been. Makes me want to breed feeders even more.

But good luck with your beardie :D Mine is a PetSmart beardie too, and he has been doing spectacular. Post pictures when you get it :D

Crixus is from a local Petsmart and was healthy aside from mild coccidia and pinnies that were treated once and cleared.. my 1st beardie, Omni, was from a specialized reptile business and wasn't so lucky.. she had extremely high levels of coccidia that didn't clear up until 3 months and 3 meds later and @ 1.5 years was diagnosed w/ acute kidney failure that my vet was certain that over breeding and poor health as a hatchling was a big factor in that.. i'd gladly get another beardie from Petsmart in a heartbeat.. good luck w/ your new adventure!! :p

I'm cursing my luck with money atm, local petsmart has a few 'fancy' Beardie babies, three look like they'll be citrus or possible sandfire babies, and I know for a fact one is a snow/leusistic, which I'd love to have more than anything!

Mom has informed me that we've got a budget of ~$70 to $100 a month, so we'll be saving up for a while still. We've decided to buy a nice enclosure (Exoterra 36x18x18) instead of making one, since it'd be a bit difficult for me and my nephews to move it due to spinal/mobility issues...(I haven't been able to really walk/lift anything since december, and my younger nephew has fractured nearly all of his vertebrae). I'll still be making a custom rock wall/shelf, though, since I love that sort of thing.

This month I'll be starting my Dubia colony, that way it'll have some time to grow before I bring home my beardie. Mom now knows that they're roaches, and after explaining how to keep them/that they won't infest our house, she's fine with them. It's a small miracle imo, but it likely helps that I showed her a nifty Youtube video with some large Hissers covered in fake crystals as jeweled pets/living jewelry, she's really in to crafting and she got a kick out of it.

Should be getting the largest tub I can this next week, and I've already found a few possible places to purchase some Dubia locally via Craigslist. (Lots of beardies on there too, including a gorgeous male/female pair of 1.5y/o dragons for $200, it makes me angry/sad though, as both are housed together in a 30gal tank. I'd rescue them, but with our current budget, it'd be impossible to separate them.) Since I won't be bringing home my beardie until around Nov/Dec, I'll have more than enough time to start growing my little colony ^-^

Happy for the warm welcome, too! It's nice to meet everyone ^-^ Will update with pics once I have the colony up and running, I may even keep one female out in a 10gal tank and do a little jewelry work on her. (Little fake pink crystals in the shape of the pink Breast Cancer ribbon as a tribute to my grandmother and my mom, or possibly the lung-cancer colored one for my mother, aunt and my father, as it would mean a lot more to my whole family.)

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
