Buddy... is not a boy, she's a momma! 3 times now *Pics*

So Buddy is almost a year now (from when I got HER from petsmart). Thought she was a boy because I self examined her and she got those pore things around her vent. Today Buddy decided to lay an egg! (infertile)
Buddy has been SOO active for the last couple days or maybe over a week.. thought "he" was going through an adolence phase. Guess not...

Is there anything I should be doing for her while she is going through this?

I provided a sandbox for her (which she is making a mess!!)

How long will this last, and is it every year?
Any tips will be very appreciated. I'm also going to do some research. Wasn't expecting this at all..

Thanks.

I absolutely love this story and how it turned out! My venus actually looks a lot like your Buddy. I think after reading this the next time I see her glass dancing and digging at her glass (which has covering that looks like a hill of sand..lol) I will put together a small lay box to see if she acts like she wants to lay before doing a big lay box. How old is your Buddy? My Venus looks to be exactly the same size and length as Buddy. However if the family owned pet store I got her from was correct when I got her April 2011. She would be about 15 months old now. She just doesnt look like she is to me. When I got her that April they said they got her as a hatching that February.

I got Buddy from Petsmart one year ago. I remember it was July but I don't remember the date exactly. So I would say 12-13months?

Are you sure Venus is a girl? Because you can never be for sure, haha! (Notice that Buddy is not a boy)

Thanks for reading!
I thought this whole time Buddy was a boy. I am always on this site and tried doing the sex test myself. She has the fermoral pores (spelling?) and I thought I seen a single bump. Apparently I was looking at the wrong end of the vent. Whoops! I should of known when she never fully black bearded. Only her sides of her beard get dark/black. She never really gets aggitated to the point she puffs out, well unless she is outside.
When she started glass dancing, I thought my temps were too high.. no. I thought "he" was going through an adolensence phase.. no. I had no idea what was happening. Then her poops were only urates.. looked that up and found other people wondering the same thing, but no answers. Then BAM! Buddy laid an egg.

I put in a small box of sand and she went to town on that thing! Made a mess everywhere! That's when I made the big sandbox and the rest is on this forum. I have a bunch of photos, I even got one of the first egg. Surprised me!

I just weighed Buddy and she is around 425 grams. I didn't realize this whole time that we had a scale in our kitchen. I don't know what she was before, this was my first time ever weighing her. Seems normal, I think. I looked around online and it seems about right.

I tell you reading this post made me REALLY look good at Venus...LoL! I checked and no pores along her legs. She does have a small bump at the vent but not the male looking one. She also only had a full black beard when she got sick. But it wasn't a puff up black beard kind of thing. Her tail tip also got black at that time (I posted pictures in the ER forum). Otherwise she only darkens to the sides when agitated, which is rare. I can remember a time when she only had urate come out and had been digging like crazy. I like you thought her Viv was too hot so raised her lightening higher and added artificial plants so she could go under to cool off better. I do remember thinking "boy she looks lumpy...I wonder if?" Then she stopped digging a few days later. No eggs but I think afterwards is when she got sick. So now I wonder if by chance she did have an egg or two and it caused her to become ill when she didnt lay? I have read about eggs reabsorbing or the dreaded busting eggs, which is what I wonder if happened and I was just lucky she survived it.

Have you emptied out the tank to check for any eggs? I've heard of people finding them later under whatever substrate you have or under a rock or something. I don't know much about eggs that don't come out. I wouldn't imagine it to be good, probably bad if they are still in there. I don't know for sure though. I've only known about eggs for the past month, thanks to Buddy. But my mom-in-law had an iguana that had eggs but never laid them and she got REALLY sick. The eggs rotted inside of her.. They had to take her to the vet to have them removed, they also "fixed" her. So she didn't have to lay eggs anymore. I bet it was expensive though. I don't know if iguanas are the same or not when it comes to that. That's why I was soo nervous when I found out that Buddy had eggs and I wasn't prepared at all.

But if she looked lumpy... I don't know. Buddy didn't look different to me, just fat. Which was normal to me haha. She looks lumpy after she lays them but a day or so later she goes back to normal. I noticed that this time around. She looks normal now, not as bright though and she's sleeping a lot more. But still eating. Hopefully nothing is wrong because I leave in 3days!!

**To whoever EMAILED me**

I don't know my password to my email, my phone alerted me that someone emailed me asking about their beardie and some egg questions. If you could message (pm) me on this site or post on this thread, I could help! I think... I'm no expert but someone will help you!!
I will try to get into my email but I have tried before and can't get it. Google (gmail) makes it very complicated to change the password.
Sorry..
I want to help, really. Just not on my email. :|

Stacey, you can remove your email from here if you'd rather, then people would have to pm you to contact you or post on your thread. Let me know, I'll get you instructions.

I'm glad Miss Buddy has a good weight & that she's done with eggs for the moment. Don't be surprised, though, if she has more perculating. When Sweetie started laying, she always laid 4 clutches every summer, then she started laying in the fall, winter & spring. So hopefully Miss Buddy won't go to that extreme.

Take care
Deb

HAHAHAHA about the goggle email! I just went through that today when I restored my cell. Could not for the life of me remember my password and took me forever to get it reset!

Has anyone else ever noticed that after pooping their beardie wants to sleep the next couple of days a lot? Venus will eat if I baby her and feed her by hand wherever she desides to lay around. Then when I stop feeding her she will come and look at me as if to say "hey why did you stop" and go lay back down.

I want to keep my email on here because my phone will beep when someone replies. My phone knows my password but I don't. Hehe.

I figured out that Buddy wasn't her normal self. Last time she laid eggs she ate like crazy until she went to lay again. Besides the day I was sick, I've been feeding her and she just doesn't seem that interested. Maybe 5 superworms and a touch of salad. She's also been sleeping. A lot. When I was giving her water yesterday I noticed she was breathing really funny. Like having contractions again. I was nervous because it was already 8pm and I didn't know if I had time for a bath but I did it anyway. She hadn't pooped since she laid the eggs and I wondered if she was backed up because I remember her first poop last time from laying eggs and it was huge. Well I think she had a egg still in here.
This is what came out last night.
BuddyPoop.jpg

There's an urate and some poop, than that big brown egg looking thing.
There was a bit more poop but it went down the drain.
BuddyPoop1.jpg

This is just the egg. I think it's an egg? Right?

Is this common for anyone? I didn't take her out of the sandbox until she was done covering them back up. You think she has more? I'm going to give her another bath today to see if just poop comes out.
I don't want to be too optomistic but she looks better already. She is still laying down but she is laying down under the heat light (not basking) and has her head perked up and doing those eye stretches or whatever. She seems more awake than what she was.

Yes, it's common for there to be another egg that's gotten stuck. Does she feel better now that it's out? If not, it's time for a vet visit. If she has eggs that's she's not laying, she can get eggbound. My Sweetie had an episode like that, I took her to the vet, they did an xray & sure enough she had eggs left. They induced her & she got them all out. They then took another xray to be sure & she felt MUCH better once that was done. So that's always an option, would you have the $ to take her to the vet? Or is there a vet in your area? Just give her a few more days, if she's still not doing well, then a vet visit would be the best thing.
Let me know!

Well she seems better now. Hard to tell since I just found it last night. She's basking now after eating a bunch.
I don't have a lot of money but if it came down to it I would find a way to get her to the vet. Only thing is, I leave in 2 days for a week. So I hope my bf will know what signs to look for. I will watch her like a hawk while I'm here but it will be up to him if he thinks she's still sick.
How do they become eggbound? She seems to do fine when it comes to laying, only twice now though.. Is it just something that happens?

Gave her a bath again, she pooped. Normally. She seems normal again. She's moving around her tank, basking on her own now. Ate enough. I hope she stays like this because it will make me more at ease.
So far so good!

Good, maybe that's it, then. Sweetie used to do that too, lay all her eggs, then awhile later there's be another one. So if she's eating well & basking & able to move around & getting stronger by the day, she'll be fine. You'll know in the next day days if there are more eggs, if not enjoy your trip, she'll then be back to normal!

I think it was me who emailed but I saw what you said about your password so have been posting here.

I havent had Venus lay yet even though she is more than a year old. As I stated I think about 15 months if her age was current when I got her. Once I thought she needed to lay because of the way she was acting. I went and got play sand but then she suddenly stopped what she had been doing (digging against glass, etc) and started acting normal. Eating normal when its something she wants anyway  Pooping frequency what seems normal for her. Urate and poop looked normal. She is basking and everything as usual.

So if she needs to lay at some point, does anyone know if she do so even if there is not a lay box in her tank? At least if I saw just one egg I would know to set a box up and put her in it. I dont have money to just take her to a vet so see if she has eggs in there. But of course if I knew she did but was having problems I would find a way to take her in.

Sweetie used to lay an egg in her tank, but before she'd do that she's stop eating anything, start scratching to get out of her tank & leave little poops/urates all over the place about a week before she'd lay the egg in her tank or her back. That would continue for a few days until she'd finally settle in her laybox & lay her eggs. So there are real signs when your girl is ready to lay. She'd also have gained about 100g before she lay, that's also a sign, as it's almost impossible to feel infertile eggs in their belly. They have a real way of hiding them. If the eggs are fertile, theyre more than double the size, so you can see clearly that she's carrying. Infertiles are really small, smaller than a nickel, so they're hard to feel, she'll just gain alot of weight without eating alot. So I don't think your little one was carrying eggs. You'd know by those signs I mentioned.
Be glad she's not carrying, it takes alot out of them to go through the labour. Hopefully she'll be one of the beardies who never lay eggs.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
