Black baby beardie at pet store. Cause for concern?

I'm getting a bearded dragon for my son (ok, and myself!) and have found a local mom and pop pet shop with baby beardies. There are 5 babies (around 6 inches long) in the enclosure together and they all look and act healthy as far as I can tell. The enclosure is clean, is the right temp and humidity, has UVB, etc.

All of the beardies are the common light tan "sand" color except for one. He's very dark grey, almost black with faint red stripes down his sides where the row of "spikes" is. He also happens to be the one my son has fallen in love with. I assume that they're all from the same breeder/litter since they're all the same size. They're all obviously getting the same lighting, diet, and other treatment. I'm not sure why they'd all be the same color with just the one being such an unusual color. The pet shop owner says that he's perfectly healthy, just an unusual color and it's not a cause for concern.

I've read that beardies darken in color when they're stressed or sick, so this has me a little worried. If he's healthy then I think the coloring is really cool and would love to have him. If there's a good chance he may have problems I'd really hate to get him and set my son up for possible heartbreak in a few weeks/months.

The black beardie seems completely healthy and alert. No obvious injuries. He stood still but moved his head to watch us when we approached the cage. He let me pick him up and stayed still on my hand, other than moving his head to look around. When I put my hand back down onto the floor of his enclosure he ran off my hand to the corner of the cage then turned around to look at me as I pulled my hand out. He seems as active or even slightly more active than the others in the cage.

Can anyone give me some advice? What are the odds that he's stressed or has some kind of health problems? What are the odds that he's just fine and happens to be an unusual color?

I have had some come in from the breeders dark. I check to make sure there aren't stress marks. If he's active and running around and eating, I don't worry too much about the color. These are more grey than black and may lighten with sheddings.

Hello :) Is there any way you can post a pic of it? They do turn black when cold or really scared. My brown female turns black when she is cold and it is a pretty dark black

i once saw a black (or really really dark) baby beardie at a reptile expo. there wasn't anything wrong with it, it was just the color of the beardie.
and i really wish i had gotten it.

Unfortunately I might not be able to get back there to get a picture of him until it's time to go pick him up.

If he doesn't have stress marks on his belly is it a pretty safe bet that his dark color is just natural and not the result of stress or some other problem?

Yea I would say so. I would look for an signs of problems and if there are none I would say that is his natural coloring

Bingo turns dark and even gets stress marks when I put him in his tank than when I take him out of his tank he turnes really light colored and is even turning a orange color now his temps and humidity are right on the dot I talked to some breeders and they said some baby and juvies turn darker to get more heat to digest food or just to get more heat so as long as it looks healthy and don't act lazy I would get him hope this helps.

He did have stress marks on his belly but I went ahead and got him anyway since my son had fallen in love. I have him home and in his enclosure. He's still dark and now has pretty dark stress marks. He's active and exploring and climbing the cage. He ate 3 crickets then stopped. He opens his mouth at us and leaves it hanging open when we get too close to his cage.

I'm hoping for the best!

Thanks! I'll post pictures when I can.

He ate a few pieces of mustard greens today plus 11 crickets. I'm hoping he'll eat a few more this evening. He still has pretty dark stress marks but they may have faded a little.

He doesn't look like he's shedding but he has been scratching and rubbing the side of his head against his branches.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
