Getting one fixed is pretty pricey. It was around $650.00. But she's our baby and to us she worth a lot more. One her follow up exam, the doctor had Athen's ovaries in a glass jar w/formaldahide and she was able to point out the next cluster of eggs. Athena was going gravid for the 5th time in a row. Blood tests showed that she was losing calium. She wouldn't eat during gestation. Dr. K said that if she is a chronic layer then Athena had maybe 5-6 months before the egg laying would have been to much and she would die. So we had Dr. K do the surgery. There was a risk involved. But the only options were watch her die or take a chance and maybe save her life. So we pulled the money together and Athena pulled through like a champ.
When they're gravid, they're miserable. The constant digging day & night. The extra weight they carry. Not eating, constantly aggitated. Back and forth to the lay box. Preggy lizzys can be an ordeal.
If you evver need a lay box, it's really simple to put together and does'nt cost much at all.
We found that play sand from Home Depot worked best for Athena. We put the sand in a 20 gal. tank and had it damp...like sandcastle building damp....built it up one one side so she was digging into a hill. We dug out a little starting spot, enough to get her head in and she did the rest. She liked to burrow downwards to the bottom of the tank. Once she started digging, her handled the rest. You'll know she's laying when her head is poking out from the hole.
After laying, she'll want to bury them, we helped Athena with ths part as she was so tired. After an hours rest, we gave her a warm
bath. I know you said that yours wasn't preggy but if she ever does get that way you'll know what to do. Plus you can always come here for advice.
