In opposition to SOPA, BeardedDragon.org will be unavailable for 10 minutes of every hour today. Instead this page will be displayed explaining what this strike is about. Google also has some good information regarding this, as does Wikipedia's page.
I spiffed up the page a bit too... added a Twitter feed of people talking about it, and a YouTube video I thought was both amusing and representative of the idea/issue (as a summary).
I've now also added an additional video that has a lengthy Interview with a representative from C|Net who speaks to some of the various concerns with SOPA/PIPA.
I can only imagine if SOPA becomes law. We would be down to a few hundred government approved websites net wide within 6 months. Next we'll be asked to cry for the camera when a politician dies or be punished!(Hello North Korea) I support you beardeddragon.org!
SOPA (this time) will not pass. Obama has stated that he would not pass it. PIPA (very similar legislature) is still a concern, though. Hopefully it will hit similar road blocks, but there's a lot of money out there to try and drive these things forward (LOTS of Lobbying and money greasing up Washington politician votes), despite the voters' opinions on it.
But just remember... this only kills it for now. New legislation with a different name, and packaged to look and smell like roses while really being rotten inside, will pop up again next year or in subsequent years. This major disconnect of proposed legislation and the actual will of the voters is a reminder of some serious issues with having lobbiest influences with large corporate funding. So, stay aware of similar things in the future.
