depends on location and what type of roach you use. if you think roaches are ewww smell a tote with a 1000 crix then smell one with 5000 dubia then chose which one you say ewww to. for all the roach owners on here you know what im talking about lol

Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been forced to limit the amount of roaches sold per week to 500-600 so my colonies can regain their #s. this will allow me to serve 4-6 people a week rather then closing it down all the way. So if you see out of stock until Tuesday this is the reason. On Tuesday I will resubmit the add to cart bottoms so you can make your purchase. To be fair its going to be first come first serve, so please don’t be upset if you go to buy Tuesday night and im already sold out. It only took half a day today for me to hit my max # sold.
Thanks to everyone who I have done business with and if I can do anything for any of you let me know and I will get back to you.
Thanks Jason

I live in Pennsylvania. :)

I say "ewww gross" because I've had a horrible phobia of roaches since I was a child, being raised in Florida. Plus it was kinda comical. :p You being the roach guy and all, hehe.

And oh, BELIEVE ME, I hate crickets almost as much, except they don't freak me out as much as roaches do. But wooo boy. Do they -stink-. I keep at most 500 on hand in a tub and I absolutely looooathe getting them out for my beardies.

But I've heard a lot of nice things on roaches. Wanna help me out? :)

true i can understand that the type i sell aren’t those tiny super fast guys that run up the wall i your house, those are similar to the Turks and the lobster which can and will infest your home. the dubia are like a large beetle and dont move very fast. the adult males can run will a little speed but not like the turks or lobsters. most people who get dubia tend to grow fond of them, i said it some time ago and it seems to have caught on it like they are the 21st century ant farm. Those guys are very interesting to watch. many people get them as feeders and end up setting up a insect habitat to view just like they did the dragons..
anyway take care...

In the state of PA, I live almost on the edge between WV and OH. If one of those roaches got out, would they infest my house?

I just wanted to say that I just received my roaches today from The Roach Guy. The Starter Kit was very professionally packed. I got the 15% over count as advertised. (Yes, I always count my insects after I buy them) There was a nice variety in sizes. Not a single dead roach in the shipping container. I have several full sized females and 2 full sized males to get my own colony started. I found a couple of small males and fed them to Brix and he loved them. He actually stalked them down.

I'm not a huge fan of bugs, I haven't gotten up the nerve to handle the bigger roaches, but the small ones I'm OK with. They are very cool to watch, and they cannot climb up the side of the plastic bin.

Looking forward to seeing some babies in the bin soon!

Can the roaches jump?

That's how the majority of my crickets escape, when they do. They jump when I'm fetching crickets for my dragons. Hmmmmm. If roaches can't jump that's a big plus!

...:banghead:

From what I've read ( :study: )the males have small stubby wings and can "sometimes" flutter but thats about it. But someone who actually owns several hundred may be able to testify about a jumping or skipping roach. ( What a site that would be)

I hate crickets...They reak and make my BD sick... :angry5:

I heard with lobsters that a 4 inch spread barrier of Vaseline helps keep them down, if they eat this wouldn't it make the BD sick? I know vaseline has a lot of uses...but is it non-toxic to them? Anyone? (Theres my unanswered question)

I'm nearing the end of the research phase of what I'm calling The Roach Project. I can't wait to be done with crickets.

I've always had a bit of a fascination with insects so it was a big surprise to me when I realized I had come to loathe crickets. They're noisy, they stink and they're master escape artists. We once had a male set up camp somewhere behind the fridge where we couldn't get him and for two weeks we had to listen to a long distance chirping you could even hear from outside on our balcony. As if that weren't enough, we recently took Smaug to the vet because we wanted a clean bill of health before we finished building his new enclosure and his appetite had dropped off. The verdict- pinworms, most likely from the crickets the vet says. This is the last straw! :angry5:

So, I intend to start a dubia colony :)
Had a couple questions. On average, how many dubias does an adult BD eat per day? Also, temperature wise, was planning on housing them in Smaug's old glass aquarium which already has a heating mat stuck on the bottom but I don't think this will be enough as we live in Oregon. I have some foam left over from building a fake rock wall and thought I might stick this around the sides to insulate as well as keep out light. Does that sound like it would work?

Thanks all,
Kat

Here's how someone fit a tank for roaches (black out, etc) http://www.angelfire.com/planet/roach/roach/cageandcare/

I've had my dubias a couple months now, and have never had a problem with jumping. Even the adult males are mellow. They just crawl on the egg crates. And they don't even crawl onto me (huge relief!) when handling the crates. I have to purposefully catch the roaches I'm after. That kind of freaked me out at first, but no more than the crickets. I'm typical of the dubia fan Jason mentioned... I have grown very fond of them, and fascinated by them. I have twinges of remorse when I feed them to my beardie, but I move through it. Something's got to keep their numbers down! No escapees yet, unlike the crickets.
I've also shown the colony to just about everyone who comes to my house, and if they have any experience with crickets at all, the reaction is the same and immediate. "wow! are they ever clean! and they don't stink!"
My advice? Take a deep breath, order some roaches, and get into it. They are not nearly so scary up close and personal as your imagination will make them. And so much better for your animals.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
