We have a 3 ft x 17 in x 2.5 ft 40G tank. Now that we've started actively furnishing Jus viv I feel like it's too small for him to actually grow in. The question is..is it too small and how much bigger should we go?
40G breeders are the recommended minimum, I think people still have good success with them. (36x18x17)
Lots of folks also use 4x2x2 vivs, either purchased or custom/DIY built.

Right, and we moved Ju to his 40 pretty quickly. The length I get (from a 4x2x2) but Why only two high and wide? like i said, i feel like his 40 will be too small in the long run
The space actually feels quite a bit bigger than a 40g breeder. I think your 40 is a different foot print from the breeder, and not as much floor space.
I think the recommendation comes from housing guidelines suggesting 2x the animals length long, 1x high and 1x wide. Assuming max size of 24".
I use a 4x2x2 and it's effective, but I like to give some out of cage time to roam too. It works for the lizard and our space. I wouldn't mind having a bigger cage as I'm sure it would get used. Heck I'd probably make a whole room into a lizard cage if my fiancé would let me. By all means if you have the space and ambition, go bigger!
Yea, instead of being a "breeder" aquatic tank, it's an actual reptile tank, or least it's marketed as such. We plan on definitely going bigger in the future. But for now we live in a one bedroom so like you, it fits with our space. Spoiled brat spends most of the day with us anyway. Lol I three, I'm the sake way and so is my husband. We want to DIY our viv.
