Incidentally, sorta answering my own question, but some other friends have suggested superworms as a possible alternative. Apparently they aren't all that hard to raise, and even if you can't raise them yourself, they're much less expensive than butters. $16.50 + shipping for 1,000 here.

I'll try the air sponge. Khalil does tend to poop in his tank, and I get to it when I can, but it often sits for a while. He smells ok. :) He was checked a little while back - regular checkup, no problems.
