Hey,
I have a wooden viv its 4 by 2 but it is short of 2 foot high. (About 50cm). I didn't think this would a problem but taking into account the size of the light fitting and the length of the bulb itself it means there is only a foot between the bulb the floor. I would like to be able to give Lovebug an elevated basking spot at the least and I'm thinking of switching to mercury vapour bulb but thats not an option at the moment as I can't get it high enough not to burn him.

My question is, can I cut a hole in the top of his viv and use a clamp lamp? Would it be a fire hazard? I was planning on cutting it as big as I can with a small overlap to rest the clamp on. Should I seal it?

Thank you,
Lovebug and Lucy.

Hi Lucy....you could cut a hole and then use some durable [ non flammable ] screen/ fence where you will put the MVB. You could fix the screen so that it dips in a bit and would form a small depression for the bulb to sit in.

Either that or get yourself a Reptisun 10. 0 t8 [ rather than the t5 ] which is good at a distance of about 8-10" and can be mounted INSIDE the tank.

Hey thanks for the reply. I have a 12% arcadia uv in his tank but he is not getting close enough to it as his basking light intrudes so far down into his cage if I put his basking spot higher it would burn him :(.
By screen do you mean that stuff ive seen on top of the glass vivs? And what would the screen do?
Thank you.

I was planning on building a 48x18x24 wooden viv, myself. What I had planned to do with the basking light was to use a recessed light fixture, and build a 3 sided canopy to hide the light fixture. To me at least, it seems like a cleaner look than cutting a hole and using a clamp light.

Hey,
Is the mesh to stop the beardie getting to the mvb?
And what is a recessed light fixture?
Thanks for the replies :)

I just set Swordtail's timer for his bath and paused it so I could actually fill his soaking bowl up and he crawled over my phone and canceled the timer 🤣
Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
