Our big greatlakeshornworms shipment arrived yesterday! We now have atleast 50 teeny hatched hornworms. And 25 or so bigger ones. We separated out the biggest 6. Into a different cup so they can get really big....then we'll attempt to breed them! We also got 250 2 inch superworms....we already "selected" 33 of the fattest and longest and put them in their containers to force them to pupate :)

How many is TOO MANY worms for my girls to be eating? Leia is 2 1/2 yrs old and she will eat about 10 or 12 supers and be done. Padame is around the same age and I truly think she would eat until she was so full it would make her sick. I kept going today to see how many she would want...and I stopped at around 18 (2 inch supers) and she had 1 hornworm.

Also how about the babies? We are feeding them small hornworms. Today Spryo didn't seem super interested. But Spaz ate 3...and his belly is FULL. Spyro prefers chopped up supers (the whiteish ones that just molted..so really no chitin to speak of)

They also are all eating greens/shredded squash every day too...and a little applesauce here and there.

I also wanted to make note...that breeding roaches of any kind are out of the question...lol...hubby will not allow them in the house..at all! I have read up on breeding hornworms, supers and dubia roaches. My first thought was DUBIA all the way....seems faster and less hastle....and I have 4 piggies...err..I mean dragons to feed. But we have been successful a few times get the supers to pupate (didn't breed them..lol..we just wanted to see if we could get them to pupate).

At that age, I would cut the superworms down to maybe 5 or 6 a day. Its tough on their livers as they get older.

Can't wait to hear how your breeding process goes. I just started breeding a new batch of superworms last week (ive breed superworms for about a year and a half though) And I have some set aside for a little bit of a secret project I got going on

Aw man. When do we find out? Are you trying to morph a new species?

Not fair to tell us you have a secret...and then not tell us the secret. Shame on you :p :laughing6:

Supers will not pupate until they are fully "grown" so the biggest worms are best suited to force into pupating.

I started with 16 worms and kept at it until I had like 30 or so beetles. I have seen a few supers in my oats since I did a transfer, I haven't tried to sit and look through them though, im sure there is a bunch. I've been doing this for months and its not off the ground enough to be a sustainable food source. You would need to constantly move the beetles around to ensure they are not eating the eggs and little supers.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
