If people act like that when I tell them about my beardie, next I tell them about the dubia roaches I'm trying to breed for him. He's not quite as ewww as that is he lol.

Hello,

Now that is pretty funny & quite true, also. You definitely wont get them to come over & see your dragon with roaches in the house!

Yes, I get that as well. Many people think the same thing when they hear I have chickens as well. Nobody else seems to get why I care so much about chickens and lizards and frogs. Sometimes people even make fun of me... but that's okay, because they don't know what they are missing out on. :D

You sound like us, we have 3 adult chickens and 8 babies as well as 3 beardies and a Russian tortoise. We also have frogs in our water garden with our fish that we really enjoy watching.

As long as we are all happy with our critters and take good care of them, that's all that matters. :)

Yay! I'm glad I'm not alone in my craziness. We currently have 3 adult hens, and 5 chicks. We used to have only 7 adult hens, but then a dog got in our yard... Within the 1st year of our chicken adventure, we have had 15 chickens all together. Between roosters, sickness, and attacks we are down to our current ones. Sorry for crashing the BD forum with chicken stuff. They are related, just very distant cousins a "few" times removed

I've never actually gotten an "eww" reaction to any of my beardies. Before my girl Scully passed away, I brought her everywhere with me (pet stores, brew pubs, camping, etc). A lot of people are surprised, a few would be scared, most would be intrigued and want to pet her. Even most people who were scared would touch her back when we promised them she wouldn't bite. But I have found some people who were so scared they wouldn't touch her. Reptiles just make some people squeemish, nothing wrong with that :)

Yeah I also never got an 'ew' reaction; ppl are usually intrigued when they see her or when they hear that I have a lizard. I guess the only 'ew' factor I get is when I go to the pet store (rarely) to grab worms and other people in line were so weirded out by it.

Man when I worked at Petsmart ppl were so confused as to why ppl were buying crickets thinking they ate them or something?? SO yeah idk ppl really just aren't familiar with reptiles as i think we like to think they are.

When I got sasha I kept calling her cute and my mom was like i wouldn't say cute but then she came over and SAW her and she thinks she's adorable and really does like her a lot and always enjoys seeing her :) she's always fascinated with the stuff i tell her about her and beardies in general as are my friends so yeah. my fiance's parents were over and they were really curious as well! i love getting strange fascinated looks when i take her outside for a walk or just to hang out on the grass since I live in a community haha.

Okay so apparently the "Ew" comments should be expected, cause I was genuinely surprised when I noticed friends and co-workers scrunch up their faces in disgust when I showed pictures of my lil' Keegan. Honestly though, why? Baby Beardies are FRIGGEN Adorable! Though the top comment comes from a friend of a friend. My friend had a 'to each their own' attitude while their friend, some girl I'd never really been even introduced to, decided to say, and I kid you not, "Why would people get things depicted as evil as pets?"

. . . :?

Okay so even if that was a bible reference I'm pretty sure there is a difference between snakes and lizards, also, ShuT THE ------------ :angry5:

So I'm just going to smile and try and enlighten people with positive comments and honest personal experiences I've had as an educated owner myself. Hopefully I can change both hearts and minds to at least accept MY love for MY companion of choice. Can't wait until Keegan is big enough to bring around in public too.

Hoping things change for you,

I'm surprised so many people have had negative reactions to their dragons. I did get a Oh Gross! reaction once from the ex mother in law but that was just her ignorance. It ticked me off so I never had her over after that.
My first dragon was quite large, 22" and I took him out with me on occasion. It was older ladies who usually approached me and asked questions. More then likely they would ask to pet him, smiling like little kids the entire time.
I can't wait until my new girl is big enough for a leash so she can start going out in public, I love showing off my reptiles.

I was one of those people! My daughter who is 16 wanted a dragon. We found one for a very good price and have been learning so much! At first I did not want to touch him or anything, but I went slow and just started touching him and watching him with her. Now I am his major caretaker. He is quite the character and maybe I'm crazy but I think he likes me! lol I like to learn and make things better for him, finding things he enjoys eating and talk to him all the time

Aw yay! I think it's really interesting how un-familiar we are with reptiles and lizards and most of them time when ppl give them the time to get to know them they grow quite fond of them :) I think there are just a lot of misconceptions running around esp with reptiles, like with snakes being slimy when they are NOT at all.

Good luck with your scaley friend! This place is a great source of information and tips and tricks.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
