Hey I've been reading alot on this forum for all the staples for meat. I thought Superworms will cause impaction? My guys two years old at 18" nose to tail. Every other day he'll polish off like 30 crix. So I'm just wondering Superworms? Silkworms? Aren't those dubias roaches hard for beardies to digest? Glenn's always got salad in his viv and usually eats a good bowl full a day. I just wanna know what would keep the longest! Because if i bought a tub from http://canadiansilkworms.com/catalog/index.php i just wanted to know how long i've got? should i also feed glenn with crix aswell? I just don't wanna keep crix in the house and am looking for something a little easier to maintain. has anyone had experience with http://canadiansilkworms.com/catalog/index.php ???

Thanks in advance :)

Good staples for adults, dubia roaches are the best. Supers are great also. I personally don't feed silkworms to my crew due to the bacteria issues they can harbor. Semi loves hornworms the best. As long as your temps on your basking area are correct, they won't have any issues digesting supers or dubia roaches.

So i could just breed my own and have like an unlimited supply!?! :D Do you have to "thin out the herd" if you get too many?

Dubia's are easy and I have never had to thin them out. I have never bred supers, although, it is not hard.

Once you have your dubia colony producing the number of feeders you want, you can control the rate of colony growth by lowering the temp and limiting the number of breeding females so you maintain a level production of feeders. If you did end up with too many Dubia, I know for sure you could post on the forum and have a ton of people ready, willing and able to buy your extras.

At 18 inches your guys are pleanty big enough to use supers as a staple. Silkworms and hornworms are also good staples, butter worms and pheonix worms are good too. I've heard great things about roaches but they're very hard to get in Canada.

I use supers with my girl and she loves them. They're easy to care for and easy to breed, as long as you're not in a hurry that is since the process takes a while.

You will want to thin out the male dubias periodically. This will actually encourage the females to produce more and there is not the mass competition of the males.

I breed silkworms and believe they are an awesome staple. I have so many right now that bruno is kind of burned out---most have cocooned anyway.

My opinion of top feeders---->

dubia or lobster roaches
silkworms
superworms
and occasionally phoenix worms

I know there have been people on this forum who have dubia in Canada, I don't remember who they are. You might have to do a site search and some serious scanning of posts to find them.

If you do indeed find a dubia source in Canada, you might want to post it under something like "Canadian Dubia Source" or something like that as a resource for other Canadians.

How many do beardies usually eat a day? or couple days? i just wanna know when i can start feeding off my colony.....?

I've heard a female will produce 15 a month as a conservative number so count the number of females multipy that by 15? to get a monthly total?

How do i know when they have a litter? will their be a lunch of wee ones? i've got 2 wee wee ones they're soooo cute; but i think i got them with my order...

Congrats on obtaining your Dubia! And welcome to the World of Roaches!

Not sure of an exact comparison between crickets and Dubias, but Dubias are meatier and it will take less. Could be anywhere from 20-40% less from some of the posts I have seen before. Yes, 15 per a female each month is a very conservative number. I am the one that likes that number so much because it allows for the colony to replenish the older breeders and actually grow in size. I believe the true average per a female is around 22-25 (with some of them having as many as 30 in ideal conditions). You probably won't actually see the little ones at first when your colony is just getting started. They hide very well in the frass and it is really best to not distrub the colony very much, since they seem to like neglect. If you see adult females, and at least one adult male, they will be breeding. That is for certain! ;)

If you really got the see the cute buggers, about once a week during your feeding/watering, stir up the frass a bit with some tongs and you might see some. It could be a month or two AFTER the first adult females mature before you see them though. Just try not to "bug" them too much and let them be. :p

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
