so i've got another quick question :D
my dubias still arent here but i've set their house up.
its a big plastic box with lid, egg holdy things (4 of) and a small shallow water bowl with sponge in....
it looks so boring for them, is there anything i can put in to make it more interesting for them?
i've got some aspen and some bark knocking round, would they like that?
also, do i feed these guys the same thing as i feed my crickets, i usually feed my crickets apple, cumcuber and butternut squash every morning, should i feed dubias the same way?
thanks guys :)

Well, that's one of the reasons roaches are so easy to take care of, they don't need it to be interesting. They only want a few things: food, water, warmth, hiding spaces and to be left alone. As boring as it seems, they will be very happy. If you want to add anything for decoration, that would be entirely for your benefit and would make maintenance more difficult.

As far as food, the same things you feed the crickets will be fine. Add a high protein dog or cat food as a main food source as well, then you are set. Replace the moist stuff daily or every other day to prevent mold.

thanks patrick :)

well the box arrived today, omg i was sooo scared,i mean trembling with fear (i know, i sound patetic).....6 vodkas later...very gently cut the tape, shakily opened box, hmmm newspaper, got tweezers, removed newspaper, seen small plastic tub with what seemed to be nothing in it, picked up box with my marigolds on (for protection), peered inside.........what do i see?

absolutely the cutest, most adorable, tiny little woodlouse looking things :love5:

i love them, i've not touched them and dont think i ever will but i'm quite comfortable with them :)
theyre only tiny which is good for me becuase its when theyre big i dont like them but if i see them grow, i probably wont notice the size increase as bad.

thanks guys...hmmmm now what should i name them?

Forget about VINs (Vehicle Identification Numbers) we need RINs now! lol

"That roach, that's R10A-5623-B409-WR55. He's about three months old, but looks like he is gonna be a big stud when he grows up!" :)

Don't worry, you're gonna be "playing" with them in no time. Just resist the urge for now, since the more you leave them alone, the better they will reproduce. It is natural to want to play with them when they first arrive, as they are new and interesting little pets for sure. The more you observe them, the more they will grow on you, trust me.

Even for the people who are afraid of them, you dont even have to touch them if you dont want to!
Scoop them up with a cup or something and just put them in your food dish :)

i have a bug phobia and i dont think the little ones are scary at all, i'm not sure about the bigger ones, they'll prob freak me out when i get them.
the little ones are so cute they just go round in circles trying to find somewhere to hide....and they dont jump at you like crickets, that was what sold me on them :)

i couldnt resist trying one out on my bd's and yup, they love them. i'm not feeding them to the bd's again, letting them get established first :D

I will probably be placing an order for them maybe tomorrow... I think I have the misses convinced who has a major roach phobia :)
To bad it will take a while to get switched over to dubia's from the stinky crickets...

a great topig to turn cricket chasers into roach ranchers. usually it takes convincing parents or SO's but the nitial convincing comes to the one feeding the feeders. I can vouch for myself that I find roaches really interesting (except them nasty germans) but even their habits are interesting. Not really unlike other roaches.

ok, so i'm quite used to the baby dubias now....so i've ordered some adults, getting a bit anxious, not looking forward to their arrival :|
any tips on getting them breeding fast? :D
at the moment theyre in a big plasic box (on top of viv for warmth) with egg flats, waterbowl with sponge in (to prevent drowning) and being fed butternut squash, cucumber and apple daily.
should i make any change to their house?

thanks guys

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
