I was just wondering what you guys did as I don't think I have anyone in my close family/relatives that would be responsible enough/caring enough to take care of it while I was gone say 5 days as they're quite needy.

Are there places that will house them?

HI there,
Quite frankly I dont trust any family or friends with my babies. They dont "get" them so I doubt they would be as attentive as they need to be.
My local reptile store does boarding for reptiles, so i just book them in for a holiday home whilst Im away ^_^

You can get way with 5 days if you top up there water and make sure you have a bunch of bearded dragon food pellets in there cage. Mine sometimes will go a whole week without eating or drinking so 5 days should be no problem. You will however need a timer so the lights are turned off and on so they get the same day and night schedule.

:blob5: We just got back from GA and we just took ours with us. :blob5: They really seemed to love the car trip! They spent most of the time on the back dash soaking up some rays and watching the passing cars. I just didn't have anyone I trusted to care for my babies they way we do  We didn't have any problems with stressing or anything. To my shock they got along great! :blob5: :blob8:

Some people look for others on here to "babysit". You can post what area your in and if someone's available they would let you know. Also, if you can't find someone or don't feel comfortable with that, most vets board animals- but be ready to pay a pretty penny.

As Holly mentioned, you could check with your local vet to see if they board. Ours does and I am sooooo grateful. We will be going to Kansas for Christmas and by then we will have 5. I don't want to have to subject their spoiled little California bodies to the yucky midwest winter cold, so we are going to board them, so they will get their yummys and their baths. Of course it's going to cost us $750, but that's why we have their very own savings account, just for these sort of expenses :D

Of course, I like the idea of "beardie babysitting" as well. I would certainly babysit for a member if called upon.

I used to take Gizmo to the pet shop to board, but after not one but two really bad experiences (she cam back VERY ill and its taken alot of time and lots of vets bills to get her right again :angry5: ) we will take her with us.

I am prepairing a 'mobile cage' from a large plastic tub, so i can leave it at my mums! We have to pay extra for hiring a car, but looking at how much the vets bills were were saving in the long run! and i dont have to part with my baby which i always hated! :blob5:

I've gone 2 different directions. And when I have the option, I prefer to bring her with me...

I have brought Vinny with me. She has a 'travel viv' which she hates because it's so much smaller then what she is used too. But she deals with it, I'm quite sure she would rather come with me then be left home alone. She spends a lot of time outside of the travel viv so she can give her legs a good stretch. She has a warm rice sock to help keep her warm during travel time, but her favorite is to sit and soak up the rays on the dashboard.

I have also left her home alone (the last 2 weekends in a row, poor girl!). Her lights are on a timer and she gets an extra huge salad soaked in water, dry pellets and crickets. I have a small tub full of about 100 crickets (for 2-3 days) with a hole in the top. That way she can only eat the crickets as they come out, and not just gobble them up in one sitting.
When I get home, she gets a nice long soak and cuddle.

I was worry about her when I leave her on her own. "Did her lights turn on? Did they turn OFF? Is she thirsty? Did I leave enough food?" I always come home to find her contently basking under her lights. Her tank is set up so that even if her lights don't turn off, she can hide in complete darkness, and I always leave more food then she eats but still, you never know.....

Zak-n-Wheezie go on all road trips with us....but of course I'd need an RV to take them all. I started training other beardie slaves several years ago in hopes that I'd have a beardie sitter when I needed one. But I found that the only trainees that I'd trust were my grown children as they understand just how much my babies mean to me. With my grown children being in their 20's it's difficult to synchronize with them I mean a weekend they aren't busy so they are available. Basically I haven't had a real vacation in over 6 years...but some weekend road trips. However I didn't usually have the best time possible as I was constantly thinking about and missing my clan that I left behind at home. :(

My biggest concern when leaving someone else to watch my beardies is the poop factor. I don't do poop in my vivs. All it takes is one poop sitting for hours leaking bacteria in the viv with your beardie walking, tonguing, or wallering thru it to end up with parasites.

I have several members of BD.org in my area now so I think maybe if I was in a position where there was an emergency an I had to take a trip I just might be able to locate a good sitter or 2 or 3 or 4.......

The vet sounds like a good idea as long as you only have 1 or 2 beardies. I'm afraid the cost to house 9 would be more than any trip I'd be going on.

The pet store thing worries me as I have seen one of our local pet store do boarding for beardie owners the problem is they may breed your beardie with another if you are going to be gone very long and keep your eggs. So if you choose a pet store please make sure it is someone you know well that wouldn't do this. I would be furious if I left one of my beardies boarded and he/she had contact with another beardie. I know my beardies have a clean bill of health an I'd like to keep it that way.

Beardielover I know exactly what you mean...I find when I leave them with someone else I'm constantly on my phone. First call of the day 6am.......did you turn the lights on? 2nd call one hour later did everyone get their salads? You found everyone's pre-cut baggies alright right? Half hour later have you cleaned up their poop yet? Who pooped? Then I'm okay for awhile once I know poop has been cleaned up. Then about mid afternoon I calling to make sure of temps. Later it's did you tuck them in and tell then good night?
So tell me is it really a vacation we're on?

The poop in the viv isn't really worry of mine, Vinny refuses to go in her viv. What worries me is that she isn't pooping.

That too! Most of mine won't go in the viv either....so beardie sitter must be trained to give baths to those beardies an of course just add that to my phone call list.

Ok ok ill be the crazyone to post this ... I would take them all(7 of em) with me on vacation! We have clear rubermade containers that are large enough for the adults n babys. Only place we go on vacation is camping and its usually 90 to 104f at that time so heat might not be a issue. We always use campgrounds with plug ins (hehe i know i know its not REALLY camping its the closest we do my girls are sissys) Sit them in the sun to bask for a while. Take their bugs. Veggies in a ice chest and we are set! I cant leave them at home :( Poop n not having food n water for 4 to 5 days no way jose! I'll pack n the water for their baths too lol We dont have anyone id trust to take care of them for 4 to 5 days close. id have to leave a kid at home and they wouldnt go for that lol

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
is tape safe for fixing something in my leopard geckos hide?
Day 3 of brumation. It's a struggle. I really miss my little guy. 😔
Mirage entered brumation yesterday, I'm gonna miss hanging out with my little guy.
