ok this afternoon I noticed this bump on Gizmo's jaw. I'm not sure the cause. I'm going to call the vet and take him in, but I was wondering if anyone has any idea what it is, the cause, or if there is anything I can do until i get him to the vet?

It dose not appear to be red or anything

Hello Michele,

How long has he had this bump for?
I don't think it is mouth rot, as it just doesn't "appear" infected. It does need to be checked out.
What type of feeders do you give him, maybe a superworm bit him? Could he have hurt himself on something?
It could be an abscess from an injury. Is it hard or mushy/soft?
Is it bothering him when he eats?
What are your temps in the tank, & what do you use to measure the temps?

I noticed it yesterday afternoon. He has only been eating hornworms and crickets for the last two weeks. The crickets are hand feed so none are left in the tank with him. Not sure if what he could have hurt himself on but the lump is hard. It doen't seem to be bothering him when he eats he has been eating butternut squash on that side without missing a beat. The temps are 97 basking and 81 cool and they are measured with a probe thermometer.

Thanks

Ok so here is the scoop!

I was able to leave work early today and take Gizmo to the Vet's. He said that Gizmo is doing 100% better then when he first saw him in November. (So I already felt better) He weighed Gizmo and he gained 90 grams in 3 months. There was nothing wrong with his teeth so that was not the cause. So, he did a needle asperation of the lump. He was able to get quite a few cells and looked at them but he said that there was not as many white blood cells that he would have expected if it was an infection of some sort so the slide is being sent out and I should hear tomorrow. He said that Gizmo may have bumped it causing the swelling so I should use a wash cloth with warm water on the spot for 3-5 minutes a few times a day and he will call me tomorrow with the results.

So I'm playing the waiting game until then. :|

Hello,

Oh that is good that Gizmo was healthy though. I am glad that he aspirated a little bit of cells/fluid from the bump & it doesn't appear to be an infection.
Based on the picture, it did look like there was a little red mark on his gumline. Perhaps he banged it on something in his tank possibly?
The bump is hard? It could just be a cyst which is almost always no big deal & benign.
You know, you can also get an herbal tea bag, warm it up & moisten it, & put it on the gumline as well. The herbs may help with swelling.
Keep us posted. At least he is still eating though.

Ok The vet called me at home tonight to give me the results:

First his fecal was fine some pinworn eggs but nothing to treat. Yah! :blob8:

Second the results from the asperation came back just as a cronic inflamation there was no puss or anything unusual. He told me to keep an eye on it and if it changes in any way they to call him.

Otherwise a clean bill of health. :blob5:

Hello,

Well, that is relatively good news then.
For a chronic inflammation, just treat the symptoms. Use some betadine daily, to swab that area out to keep it from getting infected. Good it was not filled with puss & infection though.
How is he doing today?
Good his fecal was fine, as well. :blob8:

Do I use the betadine diluted in his baths? If so what is the dilution? If not what do use and how?

I noticed today that he seems to be shedding on the side he has his lump, but he has been keeping the other eye closed. I replaced his reptisun 10 yesterday so I don't think it is that but could it be? I just got the bulb from petmountian and the old one was only 3 months old, I wish his enclosure was a little bit larger so that I could get a MVB, but it is only 36"l X 20"h X 20"w.

I picked up his reports today aqnd the fecal came back saying 4+ is that normal or should it be treated?

Thanks for all your help,

Hello,

No you don't need to bathe him in the betadine. Just use a swab & clean out the mouth area in case there is any dead tissue that needs to be swept out of there.
Maybe once he sheds, that lump will go away. Perhaps some shed stuck there from the last time that did not come off & it will come off this time? Just a thought.
Good that you have a new Reptisun 10, it is a flourescent tube bulb, right? What type of basking light are you using, & is it placed directly beside the UVB light? How close is it to him?
What did the fecal reveal, coccidia or a worm? If it is 4+ & his appetite is being affected, or his behavior is too, I would go ahead & treat. What did the vet say?

Yes the Reptisun is a flourescent tube and I'm using a Zoo Med Basking Spot Light for a basking bulb and it is right next to the reptiSun. He can get as close as 9" from them. This morning when i got up he was basking and both eyes were open and his color was good.

As far as the fecal the report says - OXYURID (PINWORM) EGGS 4+ no mention of anything else. The vet did not recomend treatment. His appetite does not seem to be effected, though I have spoiled him by hand feeding. He opens his mouth when he is hungry and I would sit there and feed him he hardly eats anything on his own. (Bow down to the king LOL) When he is done he would close his mouth and stop eating. Might be time for some tough love, I know he won't stave himself.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
