Weight loss, not eating, sleeping more

Hi all...haven't posted here in a while, as all's been good till now, but now we're worried. Blaze is my son's beardie, we're new beardie owners and have only had him since April. We got him from Petco, so weren't sure of exact age but when we got him he was about 9-10 inches so we guessed his age to be about 5 months or so (?), so that would make him about 9 months now. He's now 18 inches long and about 12.5 ounces and losing weight over the past few weeks. I don't know what weight loss is alarming but he's gone from 12.4 oz a week ago to 11.8 oz today. Not a huge amount but when he's so young/small this doesn't seem right.

Some history...from first bringing him home, all seemed great. He was active, though he spent most of his time in his basking spot, not much on the cooler side of his tank except to eat and poop and occasionally window-dance. :D We have always fed him crickets...for the first few months he was eating crickets like a maniac, running all over his tank chasing them...easily 40+ per day (med crickets, about 5/8 inch, give or take). I started buying crickets in bulk (500 at a time) because he was eating so many. He didn't eat a lot of greens at first but eventually started eating more. Some days he wouldn't touch them and some days he'd nearly clean the salad bowl. He has never drank water that we've seen - we've tried dripping on his nose, offering an eye dropper, a water bowl in his viv, he wants no part of it. He *rarely* will take a sip from his bath, but not lately.

Baths - we've started doing them more often, I think we weren't doing them often enough, esp given that he doesn't drink. Over the past two weeks we've been bathing every other day. He has always been somewhat wrinkly-skinned, so when he started acting weird lately, I thought dehydration was getting to him, but he hasn't seemed to improve with the increased bathing. Should we bathe him daily? He's not a big fan of baths...

A couple weeks ago, his appetite dropped off the map, seemed kind of abrupt. One day he ate 40 crickets, then the next maybe 20, then quickly dropped after that to now, where the crickets I put in the tank are basking on his log right next to him and he couldn't care less. He used to poop daily, but now its every few days and much less (makes sense, he's hardly eating). Poop looks/smells pretty normal, I think (still new at this). I can coax him to eat a few bites of salad by sprinking calcium powder on it while he's standing by it (that entices him, somehow!). But really, he eats just a few bites. He hasn't eaten a cricket in at least 2-3 days that I can tell. He still basks a lot, but we almost daily come home in the afternoon to find him in his hide trying to sleep (he NEVER has slept during the day before!), and he's been heading down to his sleeping spot for the night much earlier in the evening than usual.

Worried about him! He's never been to a vet so no fecal check but my instinct says that's not the problem - he seems to digest what little he eats, isn't impacted, poop looks normal. He doesn't hiss, bite, doesn't mind being handled, we've never seen him black-beard. Any thoughts? I'm glad to provide his tank specs, lights, etc. if that would help. Thank you!

Yikes!

Oh, and yes, I've considered early brumation, but I'm not sure. I thought they shouldn't lose weight with brumation.

You're right, the weight loss isn't usually a good sign. It's good that he isn't showing a black beard, as that usually indicates pain or sickness. If he hasn't been to a vet, then this may be a good time to go and have him checked out if you have a good reptile vet available. If there is something wrong, it's best to get treatment started sooner rather than later.

If you can provide details on your setup, I'll be glad to look through and see if anything stands out as a possible issue. Photos of the setup and Blaze may be helpful as well.

Okay, some specs, first....

How old is your dragon? Roughly 9 months...not exactly sure.
How long have you had your dragon? 4 months.
How long is your dragon? 18 inches.
What is the sex of your dragon? Not certain, but I think male.
What size enclosure do you have your dragon in? 40-gal breeder.
What type substrate do you have on the bottom of your tank? Reptile carpet and paper towels.
Do you use UVB lights? Yes, a 24" Reptisun 10.0 tube.
How old is your UVB bulb? Purchased new in early April 2014.
How close can your dragon get to the UVB? About 6-7 inches away.
Do you use a separate basking bulb? What kind and what is the wattage? Is it a white or colored bulb? Yes, a 150-watt reptile basking spot lamp, ZooMed I believe.
What are the basking temps? 100-110, depending where he sits on the driftwood.
What is the cool side temp? mid 70s to mid-80s.
Do you take the temps with a stick on thermometer, a digital thermometer with a wire and a probe end or a temp gun? Temp gun.
Where exactly are you taking your basking temps? I have a laser temp gun so I measure various points up and down the driftwood he basks on...farthest from beam of basking light is high 90s, and right under basking bulb is 108-110...he usually basks in the area that's around 100-105.
Do you use a heat rock or heat pad? No.
What do you feed your dragon? Please be specific. Live feeders - crickets (5/8 inch is what I order). He has had phoenix worms a few months ago, but last batch I bought (not authentic phoenix worms, but black soldier fly larvae), he wouldn't touch. Salad: varies but always a base of mustard greens and/or collard greens. Yellow squash, sweet potato, snap peas, bell peppers, occasional apples/grapes/berries mostly.
How often do you feed and what time do you feed (morning, afternoon, night)? He gets a fresh salad each morning around 7:30. Crickets around 7:45am and again around 6:30pm.
Do you gutload (feed) your crickets, worms, etc? Crickets get Flukers High Calcium Cricket Diet and Cricket Quencher, plus whatever veggie ends we have leftover from making Blaze's salad.
Do you use vitamin or calcium supplements? What brand(s)? How many days a week do you use each of them? Before he quit eating crickets, we dusted crickets 6 days a week with ZooMed Repti-Calcium...since he stopped eating crickets I've been sprinkling his salad with a little of the calcium powder. I do the same with Herptivite one day per week.
Is your dragon having regular bowel movements (poops)? They used to be more frequent, but now small poops every 2-3 days the past few weeks.
Do you bath your dragon? How often? The last few weeks has been every other day. He doesn't put up with baths well...always wants to jump out so generally only about 10 min in the bath.
Do you mist your dragon or offer water other than in the bath? I mist him daily once. He has a water bowl but have never seen him drink from it. Have dripped water on his face but he won't lick it off. He rarely drinks from his bath.
Have you gotten a vet check and fecal done? No.
Does your dragon share an enclosure with another dragon? No.

Here are some recent photos:

About to go hide...again..
Close-up of his spine...seems "bony" to me, but not sure what's normal:

See his wrinkly belly? A little exaggerated here because he was turning , but he does seem to have loose skin:

Followup questions....

1. I have the Reptisun 10.0 tube (24") that I'm thinking of replacing even though its only 4 mos old, just in case that's causing a problem of some kind...question: I have the High Output bulb...is there a "regular" output version of this bulb? Which should I be using? Is it possible to get too much UVB?

2. What are ideal night temps? Our house sometimes gets below 65 so we use CHE on his tank at night but it keeps his tank in the 70s, is that too hot?

3. Whats a good way to check humidity without spending an arm and a leg on a fancy device? I picked up a small dial hydrometer but not sure if those are accurate, or how fast they calibrate once put in a new place? Its showing between 40-50% after an hour in the tank.

Not much with him has changed...I bought some large phoenix worms and two days ago he at 6 of them in the morning, and I got all excited that this had just been a cricket strike, but then he wanted no more worms and ate nothing the rest of the day. He doesn't seem to be touching his salad. Nothing yesterday that I remember...he ate 2 crickets, I think. I got him to eat 6 phoenix worms in a row again this morning and then he ignored the rest in the bowl. Nothing else so far today, and he is now in his hide sleeping (4:30pm!). Not good. I just woke him up to weigh him...he's still 11.8 oz. so he hasn't lost weight since my first post the other day, but he hasn't gained either. He pooped this morning, a relatively normal looking one just really small amount - solid wet "tube" shape and white thick urate, a little orange/red stringy stuff on urate, doesn't look like blood though? Gross. Anyway, still worried about him...did you see anything in my setup that looks wrong?

The bulbs do degrade over time but it's tough to say if it's time for replacement or not without getting a reading from an UV Meter. I'd say it's better to err on the safe side and replace it if in doubt. If you have a high output fixture for the bulb, I recommend continued use of high output bulbs (or even move to a T5 bulb (rather than T8) which is even higher output. While it is possible to overdo the UVB exposure, it is difficult to do in an enclosure if the fixtures are set at proper distances. I would try to provide as much UVB as you can while providing some hides in the enclosure to help with self regulation. I'd take him outside for plenty of natural sunlight in the meantime if weather permits.

Ideal night temps are probably 70-80 ish, with 80 being reserved for sick dragons who need a little bit of immune system boost. 65-75 is perfectly fine. Since you're using the CHE, I'd just make sure temps stay below 80 and above 65 in general at night.

For humidity readings, you can probably pick up a cheap digital hygrometer or a small weather station which includes humidity readings. It can sit on the cool side of the tank and take readings if you wish. In general, if the humidity in your house is OK (doesn't feel humid to you), then the humidity in the tank should be too.

Your setup looks good to me. It's good that he hasn't lost weight recently, but he's still small and I'd like to see that appetite get back up. Keep offering the salads and feeders. If his appetite doesn't come back up soon or he starts losing more weight, it may be time to start syringe feeding him.

So a little frustrating update...he wants no crickets, at all. I am about to release all the crickets in the big tub, they're just gonna die anyway at this rate. I bought superworms, and he won't touch them. Why I bought 250 of them, I don't know, LoL. Optimism I guess. I bought a dozen hornworms, never tried them before. Was shocked at how huge they were (2 inches plus) and kicked myself because they were expensive and I figured too big for Blaze to eat. Read up that he could probably handle large soft bodies, so I gave him one. He went nuts! Inhaled it. And two more. I was afraid to give him more, but in the interest of him gaining weight i bought more, and for the past week or so he's eaten 4-5 a day and has perked up a bit (still too much hiding but is basking more too), and has regained the weight he lost when he first stopped eating. He still will eat no other live feeders. If I can afford hornworms (ouch, not cheap), how many can he safely have? I know they are fatty, but he's still skinny and will eat no other protein. He still mostly ignores his salad except when I sprinkle calcium on it and that entices him for a bite or two, no more. He's 12.5 oz now at 18 inches long.

Hi there.....beardies sometimes do exactly what Blaze is doing, they reach a sub adult size and then go on a food strike ! Then you bend over backwards to entice them + spark interest in food and they find a " favorite" and will only eat that particular item for a while. So it is somewhat common behavior. As for the amount, I give mine 1-2 a day if they are huge [ I call them " finger sized" ] but you can give him 3-4 a day of the medium ones. In the meantime, keep offering the other bugs....even by hand, or even pop a cricket or super in his mouth while he's chewing up the hornworm. Some of mine would eat only horns for a couple weeks, then accepted the other bugs again.

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
