We took Feisty to the vet... :(

Hi again everyone,

Today I took our girl off to the vets as I wasn't comfortable that she'd improve without some help. After a check over, the vet has said her calcium hadn't adequately improved and her back legs are weakened from it, she's been rejecting her food to the point where she's malnourished and she's most likely got some nasty parasites just from glancing at her poop.

I already felt everything we've been doing for her was hopeless and then we were told she has Follicular Stasis and will most likely need spaying to prevent the issues in the future.

Although nothing is particularly urgent, other than her malnutrition for which we were given a supplement (Emeraid Herbivore, 5ml 2x daily), I still feel so upset and stressed for our girl. The vet confirmed all problems were most likely relating to her treatment by the previous owner (in the moment, I almost messaged him with a piece of my mind!) and will need a lot of work and some lengthy and EXPENSIVE treatment (only the one in our area, checkup alone was £55).

The vet seemed hopeful she'll be fine and we got there at a good time to spread out treatment in a way not to bombard her. I'm not gonna lie, hearing how poorly she is made me tear up, but I'm determined to get her fighting fit. She's the first pet me and my boyfriend got together and we adore her already.

I'd like to know more about Follicular Stasis but can't find much relevant information online. Things like treatment and signs of the condition worsening. Any information on any of the problems she has would be great to be honest, I'd really appreciate some help. I know she could be in a worse condition, but its still upsetting for me :(

Thank you in advance,

Beth :)

Hello,

I am sorry that Feisty is having some issues. So the vet did say that she was egg bound essentially?
Does she have developing follicles currently that they could determine or eggs that she needs to lay?
Did he say whether it was Pre-ovulatory stasis or the stage where she is trying to develop eggs but something has caused problems or interrupted the development? A lot of times that can be fixed with improved husbandry or nutrition. Or, sometimes not, depending on the severity of it.
If she actually has eggs & is trying to lay them, then that is a different matter. If the eggs have dropped to the point she needs to lay, but can't, they can give a hormone called Oxytocin, to help induce labor.
What type & brand of UVB light do you use currently?
Did he not prescribe a liquid calcium for her?

Hi Tracie,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm sure the vet said the eggs were not bound, I think I remember her saying that they weren't in the outer shell yet. She didn't mention anything about inducing labour to me and she pretty much covered every possibility and the costs.
The supplement she gave has calcium in it, something like 1% calcium concentration when mixed into a suspension. My boyfriend is still giving her a tiny bit of veg with calcium on it though, just in case, although with the volume of supplement she's on, I reckon she'd be very disinterested in eating anything else. Especially with the stress of having to be force fed :(

Does everything sound okay? I trust my vet but can't stop worrying!

Thanks,

Beth

Mirage came out of brumation on April 26. He was doing great. On May 2 he started acting funny. We just redid his tank, and he keeps going into one of his hides. He just lays there. He shows no intrest in food. HELP!
